| 5 | 🇺🇸 Culture Share Saturday: Delaware
This week, we’re exploring Delaware, one of the smallest U.S. states—but it has some surprisingly big stories to tell!
🎃Have you ever wondered how far you could launch a pumpkin? In Delaware, people have taken this question very seriously! At the unusual Punkin Chunkin event, participants spend months designing and testing machines that can throw pumpkins through the air.
Fun fact: The longest officially recognized pumpkin throw was 5,545.43 feet (1,690.25 meters)—but this record was set in Utah, not Delaware!
🏢Delaware may be tiny, but many major companies call it home. About two out of every three Fortune 500 companies are registered in Delaware. The Fortune 500 is an annual list published by Fortune magazine that ranks 500 of the largest U.S. companies by annual revenue. Here, “registered” means the company’s legal address is in Delaware.
🍳 What’s Scrapple? In Delaware and nearby Pennsylvania, you may hear the word “scrapple” at breakfast! Scrapple is usually sliced and fried until it’s crispy on the outside and soft inside. Some families enjoy it with eggs, toast, or syrup. Would you try it?
📜 A State With an Important Place in History: Delaware played an important role in early American history. In fact, Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
Classroom Activity: “Would You Try It?”
Show students three Delaware topics: Punkin Chunkin, scrapple, and Delaware’s unusual business tradition.
In pairs or small groups, students discuss:
• 🎃 Would you like to watch a pumpkin-throwing competition? Why/why not?
• 🍳 Would you try scrapple? What unusual food would you recommend?
• 🏢 Why might a company choose to register in a small state?
• 🇺🇸 What makes a place interesting or memorable?
Students must use at least three phrases: I think…, In my opinion…, I would/wouldn’t…, I agree/disagree because… | 649 |

| 7 | 💡Thursday Teaching Activity
📖 What happens when students stop reading a story and start stepping inside it?
The Hot Seat activity gives learners a chance to think like a character instead of only talking about one. As students answer questions as the character, they revisit important moments, explain decisions, and imagine different possibilities in the story.
This activity can help students:
💬 practice speaking in a meaningful way
🧠 think more deeply about characters and choices
📖 revisit important details from the text
🌍 explore different points of view
Want to make it more engaging? Try giving extra points for thoughtful questions or creative answers. | 755 |

| 11 | 🍁 Culture Share Saturday: Discover Vermont!
Did you know Vermont is known as “The Green Mountain State”? About 75% of the state is covered in trees, and Vermont is the top producer of maple syrup in the United States! 🍁🥞
A few more fun facts:
🏔️ Vermont has no skyscrapers—its tallest buildings are under 124 feet.
🌧️ “Mud season” is the messy period between winter and spring when melting snow turns dirt roads into mud.
🧄 Every September, Bennington hosts Garlic Town, USA event where visitors can enjoy everything from garlic bread to garlic ice cream!
Classroom idea: Use “mud season” as a starting point. Ask students to brainstorm English expressions for different seasons and types of weather, then use their new expressions in short sentences. | 753 |
| 12 | What is the biggest challenge your students face with everyday English? | 744 |
| 13 | 📖 Have you ever had a moment when your students understood every word in a textbook passage—only to struggle when they encountered similar language in a video, online, or in everyday conversation?
Sometimes, the challenge is understanding the expression itself. Other times, students know what it means but aren’t sure when—or whether—they should use it.
As we explore the topic “Helping Students Navigate Everyday English,” we’d love to hear about your experience.
What do your students struggle with most?
🗳️ Vote in the poll and share your experience! | 751 |

| 17 | ✨ Tuesday Teaching Tip
📖 Pre-reading activities do not need to be long or complicated to make a difference.
A simple question, one meaningful image, or a few carefully chosen vocabulary words can help students approach a text with more confidence and curiosity.
When learners feel prepared but not overwhelmed, they are more likely to focus on understanding ideas instead of trying to decode every single word. | 692 |

| 19 | Culture Share Saturday: Rhode Island
Explore Rhode Island, the smallest state in the United States — but one with some surprisingly big stories!
📍 Small but mighty: Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by area.
☕ Forget hot coffee! Rhode Island’s official state drink is coffee milk — a sweet, creamy drink made by mixing coffee syrup with milk. Think chocolate milk… but with coffee flavor!
🌊 Rhode Island’s official nickname is “The Ocean State,” a fitting name for a state with a long coastline and a strong connection to the sea. It is also famous for sailing and hosted the prestigious America’s Cup international sailing race from 1930 to 1983.
❄️ Snow days: In many parts of the United States, winter storms can sometimes lead to school closures, giving students an unexpected and much-anticipated day off known as a “snow day.”
👩🏫 Classroom Activity: “What’s Our Local Version?”
Ask students: “What would be the Rhode Island version of this in your region?”
Students discuss in pairs:
• A special local food or drink — What food or drink is your region known for?
• A popular local sport or activity — What sport is especially popular where you live?
• A nickname — Does your region or city have a nickname? What does it mean?
Then each pair shares their answers with the class.
Bonus: Students can create a short tourism slogan for their region using their ideas! | 761 |
| 20 | 📚 Forum Friday: What lies beneath the surface of a poem?
Poetry can open the door to meaningful conversations about language and culture, but students sometimes need support in uncovering the deeper meanings beneath the surface.
In this English Teaching Forum article, Aida Koçi McLeod introduces a five-step "iceberg" framework that helps students explore cultural references, interpret texts more deeply, and connect language learning with intercultural understanding.
