Repost from KSSM English Form 4/5 CEFR SPM 2021
Overused and Awkward Phrases to Avoid in Part 1 Emails
1. "I hope you are in the pink of health."
❌ Outdated and overly formal.
✅ Better: "I hope you're doing well" or "Hope all is good with you."
2. "I hope you're full of beans as I’m alive and kicking."
❌ Sounds theatrical and unnatural for teenage email writing.
✅ Better: "I’m doing great! Hope you are too."
3. "Let me pen down my thoughts."
❌ Overly dramatic and unnatural in casual emails.
✅ Better: "Here’s what I think" or "Let me share my thoughts."
4. "It is with great pleasure that I am writing this email."
❌ Too formal and scripted for CEFR Part 1 tasks.
✅ Better: "Just wanted to write to you about..."
5. "I am writing this email to tell you..."
❌ Repetitive and robotic.
✅ Better: "I just wanted to let you know..."
6. "Long time no see!"
⚠️ Informal but often used in the wrong tone. Use with caution.
✅ Better: "It’s been a while!" or "How have you been?"
7. "Please revert back to me."
❌ Common Malaysian English error ("revert" doesn’t mean "reply").
✅ Better: "Please reply soon" or "Hope to hear from you."
8. "My life is like a roller coaster."
❌ Vague.
✅ Better: Be specific: "Things have been busy but exciting lately."
Tips for Better Introductions in Emails:
Keep it natural and friendly.
Match the tone with the task (informal for friends, slightly more formal for unfamiliar recipients).
Avoid memorised phrases unless they sound authentic.
Examples of Good Starters:
"Hey [Name], how are things going?"
"Hope you’re doing well! Just wanted to share my thoughts on..."
"It’s great to hear from you. I’ve got something exciting to tell you!"
Encourage students to be authentic, relevant, and clear in their writing. Over-memorisation often leads to marks being lost in Communicative Achievement.

I was truly moved. I asked my students what gift they would give their teachers and what activities they would organise. They shared some wonderful ideas, such as decorating the classroom, helping their teacher wash the car, and even requesting the teachers to dress up as their dream professions, like doctors or firefighters.
In return, I told them that I would write a mini-module solely focused on Teacher’s Day, including email, guided essay, review, and story writing—all related to the event. I also shared with them some idioms and proverbs about teachers. I also shared my darkest days in my life of teaching and they enjoyed every moment of it. Now, everyone writes their story on "Begin with : It was Teacher's Day, but no one knew the surprise I had planned....Must include : A description of your favourite teacher and why you admire him / her, what surprise you planned and how the teachers reacted. "
