This article was widely circulated by various publications, notably Ukrainian ones. In the second paragraph, Politico includes a hyperlink (within the word "rising") to the Russian news agency TASS, which provides the referenced statistics. Following this hyperlink leads to a TASS Russian-language article. Translated into English, the title reads "In a Week, Gasoline and Diesel Prices Went up by 5 Kopecks." The TASS article further details: "Consumer prices for gasoline in Russia from April 15 to April 22, 2024, increased by 5 Kopecks, reaching 54.98 rubles per liter, according to Rosstat data. The average prices for AI-92 gasoline rose by 3 Kopecks, reaching 50.82 rubles per liter." Just as a reminder: 1 Kopeck = 0.01 Rubles. So, the prices of fuel in Russia did increase. However, it wasn't by 10%, but rather by a minuscule 0.1% for diesel and less than 0.07% for AI-92 gasoline. Did Politico make an innocent or deliberate mistake? Deliberate seems more likely, but both options are equally troubling. Incidentally: 54.98 Rubles per liter of diesel equals $0.59/liter or $2.24/gallon. 50.82 Rubles per liter of AI-92 gasoline equals $0.55/liter or $2.07/gallon For comparison, the U.S. retail prices last week stayed pretty flat at: Diesel: $3.95/gallon or $1.05/liter AI-92 gasoline: $4.56/gallon or $1.20/liter This is 76% more expensive than in Russia for diesel and 120% more expensive than in Russia for AI-92 gasoline. But does Politico cover this huge difference? No! Politico is banking on their readers not knowing the difference between Rubles and Kopecks and on the validity of H.L.
