Sitting at the foot of my mom's bed, I read the tafseer of the Qur'an for the first time. My mom, meanwhile, is getting her well-deserved sleep after a sleepless night filled with agony. It has been this way for over a year since she was diagnosed with cancer. In the book, to explain why Allah's name 'ar-Rahman' is mentioned twice—once in the Basmala and again in the second ayah of the surah—the writer references a hadith. It highlights how Allah is more merciful to His slaves than a mother is to her child. This struck me deeply. I couldn't process the idea of anyone being kinder than a mother. Tears welled up inside, but I didn't let them out. My soul was too hardened by ignorance to melt so quickly. Recently, I came across the same hadith again. Only this time did it finally connect the dots. I was too naive to see the message my Rabb was sending me that day at my mom's feet: don't despair; the Most Merciful is always right next to you, loving you, especially when you are broken and lost.

#Transcript I'm generally risk-averse. I like playing it safe. Stability and understanding that things are going to turn out okay are my thing. This is why I rarely take risks. So what I'm about to share with you felt like a risk for me. Around eight months ago, with the help of my friends' encouragement, I decided to create my own Telegram channel. And you might say it's no big deal, but hear me out. I was really worried that I wouldn't stick to it, that I would create it one day and forget about it the next day. I was also imagining a second scenario. I thought that I might not be able to offer anything useful or interesting, so I was second-guessing a lot. But because I was missing out on so many things, I decided I would give it a shot. Ever since, I haven't regretted it a bit. This channel now feels like a little project for me. It's like a baby that I have to take care of and nurture for it to grow and succeed. Also, as I was learning the ropes, I discovered that I have so much to learn because each time I post something, I usually fact-check to make sure that I'm not spreading misinformation. In the end, I have turned out to be the main beneficiary. I'm really, really excited to see how this channel will turn out in the future. https://t.me/englishnudge

Teacher-student relationship is analogous to that of a seller and buyer. For a successful deal, both need to bring somethings to the table. Patience, humility, empathy, good knowledge, and training are 'goods' that great teachers should have on offer. In return, students pay them back by showing presence, curiousity and good manners. It is a two-way street, involving give and take in every junction. Are we living up to this standard today? There is so much bargaining out there, especially online -- students try to haggle to the best of their ability. Some may even come penniless, trying to access 'goods' for free. What about teachers? They are quick to blame the bad economy, rise in currency rates or simply bad weather for why their 'goods' are expensive or why some of them are of bad quality. Such is the reality of our time: the desire to teach and learn is often lost amid excuses and negotiations. https://t.me/englishnudge

#Transcript Cotton is far and easy the most important plant in my country. For most people at least, it's like a national treasure because we grow, harvest, and export cotton broadly. This ends up generating a lot of economic leverage. But just for a change, I would like to talk about what is known to be the second most critical plant for our economy, and this is wheat. I must admit, though, that around a decade or so ago, Uzbekistan was a top producer of wheat. We had really high-quality wheat, produced both locally and exported internationally. But this trend has kind of changed because lately, as we follow the statistics, you can see that the wheat exports have fallen pretty drastically. There are probably some sort of agricultural issues or soil problems, but people are still big on wheat. I mean, we love bread. Every party, every Uzbek party, has to have bread. And the majority of our meals in our cuisine are based on flour. This is why it's really hard to take wheat out of the equation, no matter how large-scale the problem is. People continuously buy this product in huge amounts. I can also imagine how farmers want to have the conditions of the past, the right conditions to grow premium wheat, because they understand that it can be beneficial both for themselves and for the entire population. https://t.me/englishnudge

Let us learn a little something about IELTS writing today. For a 7 and higher in both Task 1 and Task 2, you must avoid making GENERALIZATIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS. This is logical since you are not writing from a place of expertise. If a graph shows attendance rates in three universities, without a clear frame of reference, you can't say something like: "Most applicants preferred university 1 over the other two." There can be many factors at play behind the statistics. Similarly, in Task 2, "Smoking leads to premature death" is too bold and generalized a statement to make. You are better off with "Smoking usually/is likely to/tends to lead(s) to premature death." This very rule applies in the grand scheme of things, too. For example: - A girl in a hijab doesn't always translate into her being pious. - A man with a beard doesn't mean he follows all the prophetic sunnahs. - An online profile with photos of libraries filled with books doesn't make the owner a big reader. - A person with the best manners outdoors doesn't mean they are well-mannered inside their home. Now, circling back to IELTS: - A great IELTS score doesn't always make a person good at teaching. The reverse is also true in every instance. Leave a sentence that adheres to this rule https://t.me/englishnudge

#Transcript During my last trip to Bukhara, I discovered the one and only lake that we have in our city. It's called Todakul, and it's somewhere on the outskirts of the city. Not that popular, I guess, because it had never occurred to me that we have any natural water feature besides all these architectural marvels and lots of barren land. So it was a really pleasant surprise to be there for the first time. We went there with the entire family, and there were people from all over because, as I said, it's the only place where people can enjoy swimming. The water there was so cool and pristine, which was another surprising discovery for me. During our trip, we played different kinds of water games and had a little picnic, although there weren't really good conditions for a picnic. But the kids, out of everyone, were having a real blast. The highlight for me was the fact that my daughter was enjoying every second of this trip. Bukara is her favorite city, and finding a place where she can practice swimming was really thrilling for her. She was really happy. She can't wait to be back in the city, set foot in this lake once again, and have another great experience with her cousins. https://t.me/englishnudge

Do you remember how you felt when you first started learning English? The first time you sat behind the wheel to drive? The first time you embarked on your job? You likely had mixed feelings of excitement, discomfort, and fear of failure. PRESENCE was also part of the package. As first-time drivers, for example, you gather all the alertness you have in your mind and body and channel it toward not screwing up and looking inadequate. This is called a BEGINNER'S MINDSET. How wonderful would it be if we kept it intact not only at the beginning of a new pursuit but beyond it? In this shared pursuit of learning English, I have come up with a killer suggestion: we need to remove the 5-proficiency-level structure (from beginner to advanced) and introduce at least 20 different skill levels. This way, learners experience newfound energy with each jump, keeping them motivated throughout. As I write this, it suddenly occurs to me: but our people like it quick and easy. https://t.me/englishnudge

#Transcript Where I'm at in Uzbekistan, we have a continental climate, which means our summers are incredibly hot and sweltering, whereas our winters can be really freezing and cold, so much so that on some days the temperature can go down below zero. For this reason, I like the kind of weather that we get only a smidgen of, and that is warm, mild weather with some breeze in the air and maybe some rainfall along the way. I think this is a perfect combination that allows me to be the best version of myself. Let me explain with two reasons. One is that when it's warm outside, I usually feel really productive. I can be out and about, complete most of the tasks that I have set for myself, and not feel tired in the least. The second reason why I like warm weather is because it's good for my health. Because I'm usually outside, I can do some exercise and take care of my mental health by doing some meditation. This helps me to gain some resistance and energy. On top of that, the early morning sun during such weather is really good for your skin because it generates a lot of vitamin D. But now I'm a little sad and trepidatious because such weather is going by really quickly, and scorching sunny days are ahead of us. https://t.me/englishnudge

We, English teachers, casually drop this popular advice: consume as much English content as possible. To see students make quick strides in their language journeys is the only good intention we have behind it. As someone who has been misled by ill-intended, propagandized content in books and media, I have changed the advice I give to my students. I now say 'You need to have at least a pedestrian understanding of the Qur'an before learning anything else in life. Even the most critical thinkers are not immune to ever-present forces of evil. Your true shield 🛡️ against it is your love and obedience to the words of your Creator, who always knows what is best for you". https://t.me/englishnudge

#bookreview I know what you're thinking. The title and the cover photo are a turn-off, and the content is even more so. To summarize the book in one sentence: Jennette recounts how her mom ruined her life by pushing her to be a Disney star. This is typical of modern books—most can be reduced to a one-sentence summary. This contrasts with classical literature, where entire books were written to unpack a single sentence. This book highlights everything wrong with modern Western culture. It promotes individualistic values that create a rotten sense of entitlement, pitting even a child against her mother. The online reviews for this book are overwhelmingly positive. The author did suffer many crises due to her mom, and maybe she doesn't deserve to be romanticized after her death. But I don't think she should be publicly shamed and berated either. After all, she is dead and should be left in peace. I had to put down the book partway through, regretting the time I spent reading it. https://t.me/englishnudge

#Transcript I need to go way back into my childhood to retract this really cool photo of me and my mom. Back then, when I was in primary school, most people didn't have their personal cameras. This is why a lot of us would go to these designated photo studios, pose for the camera, and wait for a couple of days for the photos to be ready. So, I guess this photo is special for that reason, because we had to put in some time and effort to get it. Well, I completely forgot about this photo until recently when my niece shared it with me on Telegram, and it really made me nostalgic. It reminded me of the good old days. So if I draw the general picture: obviously in the photo there's me and my mom. We have this beautiful colorful set behind us with lots of artificial flowers and some teddy bears. In the center, there is my mom sitting and I'm standing next to her and placing my hand on her shoulder. The best thing about this photo is obviously my mom, because I think back then I really didn't appreciate my mom's modesty. She looks really young, modest, and well-dressed, radiating so much light and kindness. It really made me teary-eyed when I saw it. Then there's me. There's really nothing special about me because I'm wearing this old school uniform. But I was having a really good hair day, I guess, because my hair looks nice and sleek. So I'm really looking forward to going back home and taking this photo and putting it in my album. https://t.me/englishnudge

One of the blessings our Creator has bestowed upon us is nature. Every drop in the sea, every leaf on a tree, every rock on a hill, and every ray of the sun speak of His majesty. Being close to and pondering every bit of the structure these natural elements possess brings you closer to Allah. Nature has the most powerful healing effect too. I'll never know because other channel owners are great at faking it, just like me, until this moment. You know how they say, "This philosopher/artist/thinker was ahead of his time." Just like that, Uzbekistan isn't yet ready for good, quality content. Let this be my way of reconciling the situation. P.S. I am sorry, but it seems my emotions took hold of my rational sense. I am learning a lot as I am making these speeches. For someone on their mat leave, that's exactly what is needed!😁 In this piece, I can see I misused an article in two cases 'know smb/smth at a face value' and 'a good company to be around', both of which are so common among native speakers. Making such jagged speeches helps me with putting out what I am consuming daily from books and podcasts. Super dynamic expressions like 'know smth/smb since forever', ' take the relationship to the next level' I are chunks that will get you that 9 on vocab. I mispronounced one word; did you spot it?

#Transcript One of the perks of having young kids is that they usually are outdoors, and that means you get to meet a lot of new people and even form some friendships. So, one friendship that I believe I have formed recently is with my neighbor from downstairs, Sister Fatima. She is an incredibly beautiful soul. I actually knew her at face value; we just didn't cross that 'hi' boundary. But the other day when we went out, we got to talking, and I found out how much I had been missing out on because she is such great company to be around. You know, she gave me this feeling—there are times when you meet a person for the first time, but it feels as if you have known them since forever. That's exactly what I felt when I talked to her. We really clicked. We were on the same wavelength, agreeing on lots of things. Because she's a little older than me and has a much larger number of kids, she knows so much about parenting. She was giving me some tips and hacks on how to raise healthy kids, which I found really enlightening and useful. Her demeanor was also very impressive. She was so open-minded and highly informed about trends, which you wouldn't find in a regular parent. You can easily see that she hasn't forgotten about herself while taking care of her kids. I can't wait to take our relationship to the next level and strengthen our bond, becoming close sisters with her. https://t.me/englishnudge

#Transcript I feel genuinely proud when I experience some sort of emotional or intellectual growth. By emotional, I mean it's when I connect with the people I care about. That's when I show up for them and offer the help they're in need of, and form new relationships, stronger, tighter relationships. When it comes to intellectual growth, I mean whenever I'm trying to grow as a spirit. The euphoria I feel, the excitement I feel, is really hard to describe. But I'll go with something a little more practical and tangible to answer this question. A couple of days ago, maybe around a week or so, I was having this talk with my daughter. All of a sudden, I was in full control of her attention. This usually doesn't happen a lot because she's usually distracted, but that time, I could really say things and impact her to some extent. When I felt it, I started encouraging her to take a little more ownership of her time. I suggested that she start doing a to-do list and write down all sorts of things that she feels she needs to do for the day. I added some words of encouragement, and in the end, she actually really woke up to the reality that her days were passing by really quickly. She also said that there are lots of things that she feels she doesn't have enough time for. Then she brought this piece of paper and quickly sketched a little to-do list for the seven days of the week. I allowed her to write whatever she wanted on that list. Each time she completed a task, she put a little star next to it, and we agreed that she would be awarded for a certain number of stars that she collects. Ever since, she has been sticking to this list, and I hope that's not something she forgets about after some time. I feel that she's really taking some responsibility and feels the importance of being conscious of her time. That really, really makes me proud. https://t.me/englishnudge

My seven-year-old nephew, Yusuf, is the center of attention in his classroom. All the kids, along with the teacher, are singing the same-old 'Happy Birthday' song, making him even more uncomfortable than he already is. Then, his friends take turns and make ceremonious wishes. Among the many well-wishes, one takes a chorus-like frequency: "Ilohim, katta-katta uylar ol, katta-katta moshinalar ol". The teacher smiles approvingly. I mean, how sickening is that? Filling young minds with the idea that wealth and property is the ultimate goal? The message blasting through the room was clear: 'Material success is the goal of education'. I am by no means against the concept of money. We need to make cash to get by in life. Muslims, in particular, should gain a financial upper hand to break even from the constant psychological colonisation they face. But kids should be kept out of this. Won't they be better off learning how to temper their greed instead of being lured to do the opposite? https://t.me/englishnudge

What's not to like about this👆 response? I did mess up towards the end, but overall, it's a legit answer! To me, any public figure who speaks out against big issues is a real deal. Who else do you consider a good role model?

34
#Transcript I'd like to talk about a popular role model for girls, and my answer to this question may be perceived as cliché or hackneyed, but I ask you to bear with me. So, a person who is worthy of being looked up to is Angelina Jolie. I believe she is very different from all the other regular showbiz people that we're used to seeing, and there are two reasons for that. First, she seems to be as committed to her family as she is to her job. She's usually seen in public with her children, caring about their security and well-being. She even went as far as to adopt several kids from orphanages, which shows how compassionate she is as a woman. The second reason she is praiseworthy is that she is a UN ambassador, and she uses this position or platform to the fullest extent. She is always outspoken and vocal about the current problems that people face in their day-to-day lives. She’s really not afraid of being taken down or berated. She just comes out and spits out the facts modestly and casually, and that really makes a difference. At least it gives people some hope that there is still some goodness. Just recently, she was very outspoken about the genocide in Gaza, and people found it really admirable. I think she embodies someone who lives up to her values, sticks to her principles, and leads by example. I think we all need to try to imitate her. Bot sure about that, but she is truly worthy of a lot of praise. https://t.me/englishnudge

Imam Ghazali wisely warns us: Don't waste your life learning a lot of useless knowledge: - Learn just enough Arabic grammar to understand the Qur'an. - study the theology, Seerah or Aqidah only to get closer to your Lord. Etangling yourself too deeply into something generates fanatisicm. Once you fall into that pit, there is no way out. Such delusional preoccupation corrupts the soul, makes you forget your true identity, and creates a false sense of superiority. Keep in mind these insights are coming from an expert in multiple domains - medicine, science, psychology... And now, let's ask ourselves: how fanatical we have become with IELTS? Isn't our pursuit of this test overshadowing our broader goals and true potential?" https://t.me/englishnudge

I had heard lots of positive reviews about this place beforehand, so being there for the first time felt really exciting. I was really in for a treat because all my expectations were met. The place didn't just offer an excellent menu and top-notch service but also a really aesthetically beautiful atmosphere. People came in small groups or pairs and shared really intimate talks, from what it seemed. And we did the same. First off, we ordered a bunch of food because we were both starving. Then our conversation rolled. We talked about all kinds of stuff, about how far we've come in life, what the future might hold for us, and what plans we have for it. When the meals arrived, we just gobbled them down. We ordered some salads, some fish, some Turkish meals, and in the end, we indulged in some dessert, which all turned out to be really excellent.
