Boeing and Bahir Dar University have signed a long-term partnership agreement to establish an Aviation Innovation Centre at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, positioning one of Ethiopia's leading engineering universities as a formal node in the aerospace giant's continental talent and research strategy.
The memorandum of understanding, signed on July 8, 2026, at the university's Bahir Dar campus, comes as Boeing projects that African carriers will require more than 1,200 new aircraft and 74,000 new aviation professionals over the next two decades, a workforce demand that the continent's current engineering education infrastructure is widely seen as ill-equipped to meet.
According to a statement released by Boeing, Henok Teferra Shawl, Boeing's managing director for Africa, said at the signing ceremony that the partnership aims to create clear career pathways for young talent, align university education with industry requirements, and support the expansion of Ethiopia's airline operations, airport infrastructure, and aerospace component industrial base.
Boeing currently holds a 70 per cent market share in African commercial aviation and has operated on the continent for more than seven decades, according to the company's statement.
Mengesha Ayene Ejigu (PhD), president of Bahir Dar University, described the agreement as a significant milestone, saying the Aviation Innovation Centre would serve as a platform for aerospace education, research, innovation, and technology transfer.
According to the statement, Mengesha said the center would act as a catalyst for workforce development, technology commercialization, and aerospace innovation, and would contribute to national and regional industrial transformation beyond the university itself.
According to Boeing's statement, the center will be equipped with 3D printers, flight simulators, design software, drone assembly kits, and avionics test benches tools that will allow engineering students to prototype and test digital solutions, sustainable aviation systems, new aerospace-grade materials, and uncrewed aerial vehicles.
In a detail that extends the centre's potential impact well beyond the Bahir Dar campus, the statement notes that the facility will also be made available to other universities, high schools, and aerospace startups across Ethiopia effectively positioning it as shared national infrastructure for early-stage aerospace innovation rather than a single-institution asset.
The partnership builds on Boeing's existing engagement with Ethiopian youth. The company said it has reached more than 14,700 young people in Ethiopia through STEM and workforce development programmes over the past five years, part of a broader continental investment of $14.5 million in youth programmes across Africa over the past decade.
For 2026 specifically, the statement indicates the focus will be on establishing the centre's physical infrastructure, equipping laboratories, and assigning dedicated personnel before the facility begins full operations.
