| 19 | Pre Market Thoughts - 4 Sep 26
In my TG channel on 3 Sep, i noted that across neos and memory - seller exhaustion seemed to be happening. Given the vol set up where positioning was so low and investors were relatively hedged for the downside, i grabbed a bunch of cheap call spreads for next week. This has multiplied by 4x in premium terms since then.
My overall read for the market is that it is trading on positioning and washing out people that are impatient or overly leveraged. The fundamental picture for equities have not changed much, yet if memory rebounds and neoclouds start to run - i believe we will see people conjuring up stories and narratives again. Coming from crypto, i would say that equities investors are just as delusional as crypto speculators. Perhaps just better at spinning up a story to convince themselves.
In my note on 1 Sep, i made the call for a bottoming out structure in semis - I stand by this and i believe that in the weeks to come, people will be shocked by how much semis can rerate and perform. To note, memory multiples are back at the same fwd expectations as they were in April prior to the rally. We have not seen the expansion in multiples. yet.
Anthropic S1 probably drops next week, in it - i think Anthropic low balled the growth numbers in July to set up for an expectation surprise into Aug to show "acceleration". Compute shortage will be heavily discussed and Neocloud Autumn comes into season.
Moving beyond tradfi, crypto has picked up tremendously in activity. We have seen large influx of capital into RH chain - Like in the note on 2Sep,, the last time i saw a liquidity influx from etherean whales was BSC szn in 2021. This is probably going to be something like that in magnitude, except even faster because of the dominance of social trading apps like fomo - where PnLs get made public and KOLs probably accrue even stronger following. Momentum but in meme coins.
Trading has always been about attention. Investing - not so much. But more than 90% of speculators nowadays are momentum traders. They are not investors. Even the hedge funds - when the tide goes out, everyone has just been seen to be a momentum monkey. Because that is what markets of the last 10 years have rewarded. "Value guys" like Burry need to be somewhat mentally autistic to endure the drawdowns when every single "idiot" out there is making money. Will this end some day? Probably? Maybe not?
The end result are moves that are fast, markets that seem liquid (but become disastrously illiquid in a flash as everyone scrambles for the exits).
Memecoin trading takes away all the pretense of "investing". It is basic speculation on attention and of "ENERGY". Are the masses hungry enough to push a "runner". Attention is publicity. There is no bad publicity. With AMC CEO coming out to berate HOOD's Vlad for tokenised stocks, i would argue that we will see an explosion of interest in retail wanting to go into memecoins soon.
It is one thing for retail to see a person making 1M from 1k. It is another when they see MANY people making it. Hoeflation - but for degenerates.
Do not take my words as encouragement to gamble and speculate. Do it if you want. Remember, liquidity can vanish in an instant. I would expect a flash crash in crypto some time this month from how token liquidity has been on CEXes. Will it be from here? Or 10% higher or 100% higher? Who knows.
