▶️ Y.M.C.A. - Village People Song: Y.M.C.A. Artist: Village People Album: Cruisin' Released: 1978 Movie: Can't Stop the Music 🇺🇸 Master Sergeant (MSG) Christopher "Chris" Rettig from The U.S. Army Band Downrange, did a rendition of "Y.M.C.A." at the Salute to America 250 fireworks show. He is a tenor vocalist for The U.S. Army Band Downrange, which is an elite contemporary ensemble under the umbrella of "Pershing's Own."
"Y.M.C.A." by the Village People operates on two levels. On the surface, it celebrates the real-life Young Men's Christian Association as a safe, affordable place for young men to find shelter, exercise, and get a meal. Beneath the surface, it is widely recognized as a double entendre and an anthem celebrating gay cruising and socialization. The Cultural & LGBTQ+ Meaning During the 1970s, the Y.M.C.A. provided communal, affordable housing and gyms where young gay men could safely gather and meet each other. Because the Village People were formed by Jacques Morali to appeal to the underground gay disco scene of New York’s Greenwich Village, the song's lyrics—such as "hang out with all the boys" and "you can have a good meal... you can do whatever you feel"—subtly referenced underground LGBTQ+ culture. The Writers' Perspective The song's meaning is a subject of debate. Co-writer and lead singer Victor Willis —who is heterosexual—has maintained in interviews that he did not write the track as a gay anthem. According to Willis, the song was simply about young men hanging out together, playing basketball, and experiencing city life. Despite his clarification, the track remains embraced as an iconic LGBTQ+ anthem. The Enduring Legacy Despite its suggestive undertones, the track's infectious rhythm and positive imagery allowed it to cross over into mainstream pop culture. It is now a staple at family events, sporting games, and weddings, complete with its famous, crowd-pleasing arm dance. The Famous Dance The iconic arm motions you see at parties and sporting events—where people form the letters Y, M, C, and A—were not originally choreographed by the band. When the Village People performed the song on American Bandstand in 1979, the audience mistook the band's overhead clapping for a "Y" and started mimicking the letters. The group loved it and adopted the crowd's creation into their live shows. https://share.google/aimode/2l5D7iy3HKRpo2TQk

So there is an audio file for each song, information on each song, like name of song, artist, album & year released. Along with which member of the military sang it and that military member's name. Plus at the bottom there's a little drop-down menu that gives you the meaning of each song. It starts here: https://t.me/KeeksMusicLibrary/897
