Among the fallout from 9/11 was a flood of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation that sparked conspiracy theories still popular today. Those theories targeted and exploited cognitive vulnerabilities we all have: emotions, gaps in knowledge, a tendency toward superstitious or magical thinking, prejudices, awareness of class or social status, and our dopamine system. Motivated actors—politicians, grifters, and media figures—seized on many of these theories and built careers, in part or in whole, on trafficking them. Michael Moore, Alex Jones, and so many others helped create a conspiracy-media ecosystem that is now many times larger, more accessible, more profitable, more dopaminergic, and more mainstream than ever before. These false theories have dishonored the fallen, inflicted suffering on victims’ families, and given cover to those truly responsible for the mass murder of thousands—and for the slower deaths of thousands more in the years that followed, from cancer, disease, and broken lives. The damage these conspiracies have done, and continue to do, to our discourse, our politics, and our understanding of 9/11 is incalculable. As frustrating and futile as it may seem at times, we must maintain our fidelity to the pursuit of truth lest we lose more than we already have. That means confronting these false theories, no matter how popular they are or how unpopular it is to do so. Truth matters. History matters. What happened that day, and why it happened, matters.
