The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is a plan from the European Union (EU) to tax carbon-intensive products, such as iron and steel, cement, fertiliser, aluminium and electricity generation, from 2026. This tax is proposed to be implemented by the EU in 2 stages entering into force on October 1, 2023. Under the 3 years transitional phase, only carbon emission reporting regulations would apply and there would be no requirement to pay Carbon Border Tax. After the transition period, tax would be levied on varied goods in a phased manner from 2026 to 2034. By 2034, all the goods and materials imported in the EU will be encased with the applicability of CBAM. India has maintained that developed countries cannot push the burden of doing more to tackle climate change while they evade responsibilities themselves. At COP27, India said all fossil fuels needed to be phased down and not just coal, which has been targeted by the developed countries and which India is heavily reliant on. https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/trade/exports/insights/carbon-border-tax-why-it-may-have-adverse-impact-on-indias-exports-to-the-eu/articleshow/97571575.cms https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/10/what-is-a-carbon-border-tax-what-does-it-mean-for-trade/

ESG refers to the criteria used to evaluate a company's performance on environmental, social, and governance issues. This includes issues such as carbon emissions, labor practices, diversity and inclusion, executive pay, and board independence, among others. For example, TCS has low carbon emission because of being a service company, it has more women employee so that promote social inclusion and it also enjoys good governance practice at the organizational level. One of the most significant opportunities presented by ESG factors is the potential for sustainable and responsible investment. Investors are increasingly looking to invest in companies that are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. At the same time, however, there are also challenges associated with ESG considerations, particularly for developing countries. For example, many businesses in developing countries may struggle to meet ESG criteria due to limited resources or competing priorities. For example, India is one of the largest producers of coal in the world, and is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for energy. This can make it more difficult for Indian companies to meet criteria related to carbon emissions or renewable energy. Another significant challenge is the potential for ESG criteria to be used as a form of trade protectionism. Developed countries may use ESG criteria as a way to restrict imports from developing countries, particularly in industries such as agriculture or textiles. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued guidelines on ESG reporting, which will require listed companies to disclose information on their ESG performance.
