Repost from Russian MFA 🇷🇺
◼️ In the early morning of June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched a treacherous attack on the Soviet Union. The Great Patriotic War began — a struggle that lasted 1418 days and nights and claimed the lives of 27 million Soviet citizens.
Among the cities struck by the enemy’s first blow was #Brest, whose fortress was one of the most heavily fortified strongholds in the region. The Nazis expected to capture the Brest Fortress within just eight hours, but Soviet defenders put up fierce resistance, significantly delaying the advance of the invaders. Some soldiers continued to hold out in the fortress’s underground passages and catacombs until late July and even August 1941.
According to the Nazi plans, operation 'Barbarossa' was aimed at clearing the path to advance toward Smolensk and eventually USSR's capital — Moscow. The Germans did manage to deliver a heavy blow on Brest, but to their disappointment the #BrestFortress did not surrender. Soviet forces heroically stood to defend the largest fortress on the country's western border, deterring the enemy troops during the first week of the war.
For nearly a month, the citadel’s defenders tied down the entire (!) Wehrmacht division in Brest. At sunrise on June 22, the enemy’s powerful artillery barrage collapsed upon a garrison of almost 7,000 Red Army soldiers. Within hours, Soviet forces were encircled by the enemy and severed from the main headquarters and supply lines. Facing a shortage of ammunition, food and water, they resolved to fight to the last, turning the Brest Fortress into a bastion of resistance.
Hitler’s troops expected to seize the citadel within hours but found themselves bogged down for a week. Moreover, on the very first day of battle, despite outnumbering Soviet forces in both manpower and equipment, it was the Nazis who ordered their units to retreat. To crush the Red Army’s resistance, the Nazi invaders deployed incendiaries and tear gas, raining down 500 kg bombs.
The Wehrmacht’s surprise attack left the Brest Fortress garrison with no chance to organise defence. Resistance became fragmented, with Soviet soldiers fighting the Germans even in hand-to-hand combat.
Resistance persisted until late July and even early August 1941. While most fortress defenders perished, small groups managed to break through to partisan units or the frontline. The enemy also sustained significant casualties of 1,121 killed and wounded, representing 5% of total Nazi losses during the war’s first week.
Brest was liberated on July 28, 1944, by the forces of the 1st Belorussian Front during Operation Bagration in less than two days. For the first time in three years of Nazi occupation, Soviet soldiers entered the fortress. On the walls they discovered inscriptions left by the fortress defenders, the most famous of which — dated July 20, 1941, and uncovered in 1950 — reads:
“I die but do not surrender. Farewell, Motherland.”🎖 The Brest Fortress stands as an enduring symbol of courage, undending will and heroism of the Red Army soldiers. The defenders’ names are forever etched in history, with over 200 heroes receiving military honours. On May 8, 1965, the legendary Fortress was awarded the title of Hero Fortress, later becoming a memorial complex in 1971. Visitors from across the Union State and former Soviet republics, both adults and children, come to honour the defenders’ extraordinary feat. The finest and distinguished students from Brest’s schools stand solemn guard at the Eternal Flame. #WeRemember

🇷🇺🇧🇾 Statement of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia “On the Genocide of the Soviet People during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” (June 21, 2026)
◾️ 85 years ago, Germany treacherously invaded the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, marking the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
The actions of the German Nazis and their accomplices were aimed at exterminating the Soviet people.
In the occupied territories, the invaders committed acts aimed at the complete or partial elimination of the national, ethnic and racial groups inhabiting the Soviet Union. These included killing members of these groups, causing serious harm to their health, forcibly preventing births, forcibly transferring children, forcibly displacing people and deliberately creating conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction.
🕯 The war claimed the lives of almost 27 million Soviet people. Civilian losses exceeded 13.6 million.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia considers it unacceptable to forget the crimes committed by the Nazis. Preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is essential to preventing crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity, countering manifestations of Nazism, and maintaining universal peace and harmony.
✍️ To preserve the memory of the millions of Soviet citizens who fell victim to Nazi criminals and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War, the Republic of Belarus adopted Law No. 146-Z “On the Genocide of the Belarusian People” of January 5, 2022, while the Russian Federation adopted Federal Law No. 74-FZ “On Perpetuating the Memory of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945” of April 21, 2025.
The legislative recognition of the genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War is a logical continuation of the judgment of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and subsequent court rulings against Nazi criminals and their accomplices.
Taking into account the Charter of the United Nations of June 26, 1945, the Charter and Judgment of the Nuremberg Tribunal, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of December 9, 1948, and the Convention on the Non-Applicability of Statutory Limitations to War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity of November 26, 1968, and guided by the legislation adopted in the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, the Parliamentary Assembly recognises the atrocities committed by the Nazi German invaders and their accomplices against the population of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War as genocide of the Soviet people.
The members of the Parliamentary Assembly call for resolute opposition to all attempts to rewrite history, justify Nazism or diminish the Soviet people’s role in defeating fascism. They regard support for neo-Nazism for the sake of political expediency as a threat to all humanity.
The members of the Parliamentary Assembly call on the United Nations, international interparliamentary organisations and bodies, and fellow parliamentarians to join this Statement and adopt corresponding statements.

🕯 June 22 marks the Day of Memory and Sorrow — the most tragic date in the history of our country.
On this very day 8️⃣5️⃣ years ago, on June 22, 1941, the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people commenced — the Nazi Germany and its European 'axis' accomplices treacherously attacked our Motherland, without a declaration of war.
⬛️ The Great Patriotic War lasted for 1418 days and nights, claimed lives of some 27 million Soviet citizens. It was the nationwide tragedy that brought terrible suffering to each and every family in our country.
Today, June 22 echoes with sorrow, grief and pain for the ruined lives of millions of our people.
The enemy — the German Nazis and their European satellites — invaded the Soviet Union with one aim — to destroy, mercilessly eliminate, kill and physically annihilate our Motherland's entire population regardless of people's ethnic, racial or religious background. During the occupation of Soviet territories, Hitler’s troops killed 13.7 million Soviet civilians, including women and children. They carried out the real GENOCIDE as part of their so-called 'Lebensraum' policy to gain the living space in the East for German colonisation.
The war crimes committed by Nazis and their henchmen have #NoStatuteOfLimitations.

⬛️ At dawn on June 22, the Nazi aircraft launched massive strikes on airfields, railway stations, naval bases, deployments of the Red Army forces, and cities along the entire western state border of the USSR and up to 250-300 km into Soviet territory. Together with Nazi Germany, Romania, Italy, Finland, Slovakia, France, Croatia, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands and other 'axis' powers allied to the Third Reich took part in the aggression against our country. The industries of almost the entire European continent served the aggressors.
The facts of collaboration of the majority of European governments, military, industrial circles and citizens with the Nazis are not and will never ever be forgotten.
It was our country that took the main blow of the Nazi aggression. It was the Soviet Victorious People who showed unparalleled heroism and resilience, fighting for the freedom of our Motherland. Our nation paid for the #GreatVictory with the blood of 27 million Soviet citizens who not only expelled Nazis from Soviet territory but also heroically saved Europe from the 'Nazi plague'.
The tragedy that befell our people was directly caused by the evil ripening in the heart of Europe — Nazism, the ideology of human hatred and racial supremacy over other peoples and nations.
💬 Excerpt from President of Russia Vladimir Putin’s address at a gala reception to celebrate the 81st Anniversary of Victory in the 1941–1945 Great Patriotic War (May 9, 2026):
This year marks 85 years since Nazi Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union. This date carries both the sorrow of millions of lives lost and a reminder of the terrible consequences of blind belief in one’s own superiority, racism, xenophobia, and the denial of other peoples’ right to identity.🎙 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (from the briefing on June 18, 2026)
The atrocities committed by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War have no statute of limitations. Russia has recognised these crimes at the legislative level as the genocide of the Soviet people and will tirelessly seek recognition of this fact by European countries and the so-called West as a whole. <...> Today we mourn those who, at the cost of their lives, fulfilled the sacred duty of defending the Motherland. We will not allow the feat of the Soviet people, who saved Europe and the world from the horrors of the brown plague, to be erased from memory. We will forever remember the Heroic Feat of Soviet soldiers, of home front workers, of all and everyone who forged the Great Victory. 🕯 We remember. We mourn. We shall not forget, and we shall not let it be forgotten. #DayOfMemoryAndSorrow

Some Reflections on Resolving the Ukrainian Crisis, Europe and Global Security
✍️ More than two decades of negotiation with Europe, as part of the collective West, leads to only one conclusion: engaging Russia in dialogue has served as a diplomatic smokescreen for the geopolitical expansion of Western institutions, above all NATO and the EU, eastwards, right up to Russia's borders.
☝️ Europe's complicity in fuelling the Ukrainian crisis is undeniable.
In 2013, the EU rejected outright our proposal for a compromise on the association agreement – a deal Brussels had long been pressing Viktor Yanukovich to sign.
It is worth recalling: Ukraine was offered unilateral market opening, without reciprocal commitments – terms that would have proved incompatible with Kiev's continued membership in the CIS free-trade zone. When Viktor Yanukovich requested a deferral, the Europeans incited street riots which swiftly escalated into a coup d'état in Kiev in February 2014.
Russia, for its part, explored every diplomatic avenue to defuse Europe's security crisis. However, in January 2022, the US and NATO rejected Russia's proposal for legally binding mutual security guarantees.
Following the launch of the special military operation, the united Europe threw its support behind the British Prime Minister's efforts to sabotage the Istanbul negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Boris Johnson's appeal to Kiev – "don't sign anything, just fight" – slammed the door on genuine diplomacy for the foreseeable future.
***
Additional key points:
• The real current objective of Europe's leaders is not to negotiate with Russia. It is to shore up the Zelensky regime and preserve it as a launchpad for continued confrontation against Russia.
• European leaders are scrambling to secure a ceasefire as quickly as possible and for one reason only: to prevent the collapse of Ukrainian military on the battlefield. The plan is to "freeze" the conflict without addressing its root causes, and then rapidly deploy military contingents from the Anglo-French "coalition of the willing" onto Ukrainian soil.
• The united Europe continues to dream of expansion. It intends to absorb Ukraine and Moldova, while pulling Armenia into its sphere of influence. As for Ukraine, it is increasingly eyed as the "striking fist" of a future European military force, independent of the US and independent of NATO.
❗️ This state of affairs poses serious threats to global security. A direct confrontation between NATO and Russia could rapidly escalate into an exchange of nuclear strikes, with catastrophic consequences.
• European leaders should recognize that the model of regional security built in Europe over decades, ever since the adoption of the Helsinki Final Act in 1975, has been destroyed by their own hands. 👉 And it will never be restored.
• We must now move toward creating a continent-wide security architecture open to all Eurasian countries and that reflects today's #MultipolarWorld.
• The principle of equal and indivisible security trampled upon by the Euro-Atlantists, can be embodied within a new Eurasian architecture. When the time is ripe, Europe too will be able to join this great effort.
• Meaningful dialogue requires the restoration of trust, shattered by the anti-Russian actions of the West, and Europe as part of it, in the post-Cold War era.
❌ Trust cannot be restored, nor can dialogue be resumed, through ultimatums such as the one issued to Russia in London on 7 June 2026.

⚡️ Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus have published their third Joint Report on the human rights situation in selected countries.
👉 Read the Report in full
From the address to readers by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Dmitry Lyubinsky and Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Igor Sekreta:
The universal nature of human rights means that people of any nationality, race, sex, age and state of health have the right to a dignified life regardless of what they believe in, whom they love, or any other characteristics. The universality of human rights also means that they must be respected across the globe, in every country, without manipulations based on double standards. One cannot pretend that problems do not exist, or hush them up, while at the same time interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states in an attempt to impose the notorious “rules-based order” – rules that run counter to the norms and principles of international law enshrined in universally recognised international documents. This is precisely the approach we call on our colleagues from the countries covered in this report to follow.*** The third joint report by Foreign Ministries of Russia and Belarus on the human rights situation in selected countries, presented to experts and the public, is a clear example of close intergovernmental cooperation in the field of human rights and demonstrates the proximity of our countries’ positions on this important issue. The document is aimed at drawing attention to the challenges and threats facing today’s international community in the field of human rights. Above all, when describing the list of problems in the promotion and protection of human rights compiled in the report, one cannot fail to note the unchanged essence of these problems – namely, the so-called double standards that still persist and are even worsening in assessments of various human rights situations and phenomena. This approach is regularly used by the “collective West” to fuel confrontation, pressure sovereign states and interfere in their internal affairs, as shown in the relevant country sections of the report. Through their increasingly brazen approaches to interpreting human rights, Western countries completely negate their own rhetoric about the universality of these rights. Another feature of the current situation is the scaling back of social obligations and the militarisation of entire sectors of the economy – all under the pretext of the notorious external threat. Such “narratives”, as they are now commonly called, are widespread in the Baltic states, Poland, Ukraine and Moldova, whose economies are rapidly degrading. Germany, France, Britain and a number of other countries of the “Old and New World” are following the same path. *** ❗️Another matter of grave concern is the resurgence of racism and racial discrimination. We have repeatedly stated at international human rights forums and in thematic reports that racist ideas and “values” are being openly promoted in a number of countries, while national radicals are being glorified. Such approaches are destroying the principles and manifestations of humanism in international politics, erasing established notions of normality and permissibility, and effectively laying the groundwork for a new public morality based on inequality, discrimination and the possibility of eliminating those deemed undesirable. The numerous examples from the present and the past compiled in the report convincingly confirm the importance – indeed, the imperative – of consolidating the efforts of the entire constructively minded international community to successfully counter existing and emerging challenges and mitigate their negative consequences. #HumanRights
Repost from Russian MFA 🇷🇺
⚡️ Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus have published their third Joint Report on the human rights situation in selected countries.
👉 Read the Report in full
The document follows up on the annual reports by MFAs of Russia and Belarus on the human rights situation around the world and is designed to support our joint efforts to draw the attention of the international community to the challenges and threats facing modern society in the field of human rights protection.
👉 First Joint Report
👉 Second Joint Report
The report will be presented on June 30, July 7 and July 9 during conferences at the #CIS Executive Committee in Minsk, at the #OSCE headquarters in Vienna, and on the sidelines of the 62nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The information collected in the report clearly exposes a very serious problem of our time – the spread of ideologies that seek to justify inequality.
In practice, this manifests itself in the growing prevalence of racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance. The danger lies in the fact that these ideologies and practices are used to serve the ambitions of Western countries and eliminate “threats” to their dominance, which they have preserved by fair means or foul for the past 500 years, enabling them to extract disproportionate benefits at the expense of other societies and to the detriment of all humanity.
At first, this dominance was maintained directly – through the exploitation of colonies, the siphoning off of resources, the organisation of slavery, and so on. Today, neocolonial methods are widely used.
⚠️ And the West sees the “threat” in the alternative offered by Russia, Belarus and other countries pursuing independent domestic and foreign policies.
The West has designated them as its competitors and even adversaries. In this way, it justifies its aggressive policy, stopping at nothing and using any measures – often illegal ones – against those it finds undesirable.
***
Confrontation is being deliberately fuelled, and pressure on sovereign states is mounting. Direct interference in their internal affairs, including through the use of force, is also being employed. Across the globe, the West is creating zones of conflict and seeking to impose its own rules, following the old colonial maxim of “divide and conquer”.
This is happening at a time when the European – and, more broadly, Western – model of social development, along with the Euro-Atlantic security model, has discredited itself. Through its actions, the West is making it increasingly clear that it is unable to defend its own development models in fair competition, and is therefore sinking ever deeper into the unseemly politicisation of all areas of interaction, while only creating more and more problems for those it has declared to be its “competitors”.
Since 2022, the West has been actively using the illegitimate neo-Nazi regime in Kiev as a geopolitical and military foothold against Russia. More recently, it has begun floating the idea of using the Kiev junta against the Republic of Belarus as well.
Only truly equal cooperation among all states gives humanity a chance to completely eradicate colonialism and its modern forms. And only such interaction will prevent individual countries from bending the system of international law to their will and using its universal human rights mechanisms for selfish purposes.
Unlike similar Western studies, the report prepared jointly by the Foreign Ministries of Russia and Belarus is not intended to lecture or moralise.
☝️ This Joint Report summarises factual information on human rights violations in the countries mentioned. 👉 The right to pass moral judgment on them remains with the readers.
