| 3 | Head Constable Revathi… a key witness who led to the hanging of nine fellow police officers in the Sattankulam lockup death case.
This is a perfect example of how a single witness can be bigger than the system in a case. The lockup death case in Tamil Nadu shook the country. But Revathi was the reason for this atrocity to come to light.
After the incident, the situation in the station was such that there was clear pressure not to let what happened come out. Destroying evidence, changing the story… these were the main objectives.
At such times, most police officers feel safe staying silent. But Revathi did not choose that option. For her, it was not just a matter of duty… she had to answer for the atrocities that had happened before her eyes.
On one hand, fellow employees… on the other hand, pressure from senior officers… standing up in such a situation was not an easy thing. Still, she did not back down. What she said before the magistrate changed the course of the case. It wasn’t just a statement… it was the first clear picture of what had really happened that night.
Even as the police station was being cleaned and evidence was being destroyed, she cleverly identified the blood stains left on the corners of the walls and under the tables and showed them to the magistrates.
These blood stains played a major role in scientifically proving the accused’s crime.
Although the CCTV footage was destroyed, she explained that she had matched the timing of the events based on her memory, which served as a guide for the investigation.
This was not an ordinary case. It was a huge decision to tell the truth against the same system, living in the same system. But she did not back down.
Her words strengthened the case. The court also focused on her safety and provided her with special protection. She had gained this recognition because she had said it.
Revathi did not need to make a show of herself. What she did was very simple — she did not hide what had happened.
But at the same time, it was something that very few people could do.
There may have been many reasons behind justice being served in the Satankulam case…
But there was only one name behind the truth coming out — Revathi.
