Cowboy Funk is probably also my top five eps

Mushroom Samba is for sure my favorite episode, Speak like a child legit made me fucking cry, fuck Spike the Main Character, what's FAYE VALENTINE GOING THROUGH???

Ed is my favorite, Faye is the most interesting, Spike hasn't had a decent day in the past 13 years, and Jet is an ex-Cop and it shows

You've tied a personal choice so closely to your identity, and the knots become so tangled, you don't know where to cut lest you sever a finger, a hand, or your whole arm. You're not the media you consume, the art you enjoy. Those aspects of yourself can be ephemeral and constantly in flux. You are your identity, you are your values, and personal ethics/sense of morality— which are also capable of change, but you move throughout the world in accordance with them, you use them as your guide to pick and choose, and make decision.

It's people's refusal to let go of Harry Potter, knowing the harm JK does while still attempting to be in allyship with trans people. It's going to Chris Brown concerts. It's watching the new Armie Hammer movie. While saying you stand with victims, maybe even as a survivor yourself.

This happens a lot with "stan" culture in music, but it happens with any all fandom. It happens with abusers more so often. Where someone's art has been so tied to your selfhood, for such a long time that when that artists is ousted as an abuser, or racist or transphobe, your gut reaction is to defend them as if you're defending yourself. It's this monster of guilt and shame that asks you "if they were such a horrible person, what does that make you? You who loved their art so dearly?"

But when your fanship(?) of something is tied to your identity, any critic, analysis or commentary on something completely unrelated to you feels just as hurtful as if somebody tried to "disprove" your gender identity. You see this with Swifties, where being a fan of her is so integral to their identity that any critic of her music is seen, not just as an attack on TS, but as an attack on you. It's an attack on your taste, your interest, what you do with your time. When you can separate yourself from your fanship, even someone's misinterpretation feels like they're misinterpreting you.

Your identity is integral to you, so any commentary or "debates" on it, feels like an attack. I can't change being Iranian, I can't change being a Lesbian, the notion that there is a "better" identity to have, that they can be ranked objectively in some way infringes on people's human right. But I can stop watching Doctor Who. I can stop engaging with the harmful writers, or an abusive actor's future work.

Tying your personal choices to your identity incapacitates you in your future decision making. Your identity is often stagnant, unchangeable. Your eye color/skin color/gender/sexuality. It is truths about yourself that is seldom changeable, unless by external societal pressure. Your personal choice is flexible; my subject being "being a fan". You have full control over that; what you watch, listen, read. It's not who you are, but what you like. And yeah this is the most "baby's first observation" type of comment, but I started thinking about it because of my aversion to referring to myself as "Whovian". That title feels more akin to an identity, like "Iranian", or "Lesbian".

I'm... i'm gonna give this another good ol' college try...
