MAN POSED AS SON OF IRISH MURDER VICTIM Court hears how man with five ali­ases and no links to Ire­land got pass­port after apply­ing online from Lon­don Sunday World (Ireland) BY ALAN SHERRY 15 Feb 2026 AN ALGERIAN man with no links to Ire­land was able to obtain an offi­cial Irish pass­port in a false name by claim­ing he was the son of an Irish woman murdered in the UK, des­pite the fact she had no chil­dren. Dub­lin Cir­cuit Court was told it was “harder to sign up for a mobile phone con­tract with Voda­fone” than get an Irish pass­port, after it emerged that Sabouni Abdel­h­amid was gran­ted the doc­u­ment after he claimed to be the son of Cath­er­ine ‘Kate’ Cor­ridan, who was murdered in Lon­don . Ms Cor­ridan (31) was ori­gin­ally from Caherd­aniel, Co. Kerry but moved to Lon­don in the 1980s and worked as a cook in a school for the blind. She dis­ap­peared in 1994, but her remains were only recovered a dec­ade later when her former part­ner, Samuel Ker­rigan, led police to a grave where he bur­ied her body after bru­tally killing her and steal­ing her money. Ker­rigan, who is ori­gin­ally from Dub­lin, was later sen­tenced to life for her murder. Abdel­h­amid (32), with an address at Finch­ley Road, Lon­don, was born in Algeria two years before Ms Cor­ridan dis­ap­peared and had no con­nec­tion to the Irish­wo­man. However, the case received a lot of media cov­er­age and fea­tured in the UK doc­u­ment­ary series ‘The Real Man­hunter’, which was broad­cast in 2022. Fol­low­ing the air­ing of the show, Abdel­h­amid hatched a plan to pose as her son, des­pite the fact she had no chil­dren. While he grew up in Algeria to Algerian par­ents, Abdel­h­amid moved to France before set­tling in the UK where he lived under a num­ber of ali­ases and even served time in prison for using a false iden­tity. Bizar­rely, his story that he was Ms Cor­ridan’s son worked – and he was suc­cess­fully issued with an Irish pass­port after apply­ing to the Depart­ment of For­eign of Affairs (DFA) online from Lon­don in 2023. Crime World con­tac­ted the DFA for com­ment on how the pass­port was issued and if any meas­ures have been take to pre­vent sim­ilar incid­ents occur­ring. A spokes­per­son said they do not com­ment on indi­vidual cases. The spokes­per­son added: “The integ­rity of the Irish pass­port is the fore­most pri­or­ity of the Pass­port Ser­vice. The Irish pass­port has a strong inter­na­tional repu­ta­tion due to the strength of the secur­ity fea­tures within the pass­port book and the robust pro­cesses involved in its issu­ance. “The Irish pass­port is cur­rently ranked fourth in the Hen­ley Global Pass­port Index as it provides our cit­izens with visa-free access to 185 coun­tries.” Abdel­h­amid was arres­ted in Dub­lin Air­port on Septem­ber 3, 2025, after fly­ing in from Brus­sels on a con­nect­ing flight to the UK using an Irish pass­port card in the name of Soufi­ane Bouchata. The name and date of birth he used were the same as a man liv­ing in France who had no con­nec­tion to Abdel­h­amid. Abdel­h­amid insisted to gardaí that he was Soufi­ane Bouchata but officers sent his fin­ger­prints to other police forces inter­na­tion­ally and dis­covered they matched those of a man who had used five dif­fer­ent ali­ases and had pre­vi­ously been jailed in the UK over using a false iden­tity. MISLEADING Gardaí also estab­lished his real name was Sabouni Abdel­h­amid (32) and he was ori­gin­ally from Algeria but has lived in Europe under false iden­tit­ies. He pleaded guilty to a num­ber of offences in the Cir­cuit Court this week, includ­ing using a pass­port card known to be a false instru­ment, indu­cing another per­son to accept it, giv­ing false or mis­lead­ing inform­a­tion when apply­ing for an Irish pass­port and using a UK driver’s licence as a false instru­ment.
