Shima Spain Village, Shima, Japan 🇯🇵
This Spanish theme park stands out in the Japanese countryside.
Called Shima Spain Village, or Parque España, this complete themed entertainment experience mixes faithful recreations of actual castles, statues, and Spanish landmarks with whimsical rides, parades, and a unique cast of original animal characters.
If you can’t make it the 7,000 miles from Japan to Europe, Parque España’s Santa Cruz Street looks like a scenic walk through Spain’s Andalusia, and the monolithic Javier Castle Museum is a recreation of an actual 10th-century castle of the same name. This dazzling castle is filled with floors of Spanish history on the inside, and a rooftop deck gives magnificent views of the bay.

Strange rock formations tower above the river that snakes through this enchanting Icelandic canyon.
At just over a mile long, it certainly doesn’t boast the enormous expanses of the world’s other mighty canyons. But what it may lack in size, it absolutely makes up for in beauty.
The canyon is made up of an assortment of crazy rock formations. They stretch skyward, flanking a river like gargantuan grass-clad guardians. A walking trail traces the top of the crags, leading to a certain spot that lets hikers feel as though they’re standing atop a kingdom of sublime natural wonders.

A landscaping project known as Gardens by the Bay hopes to beautify the marina and help transform the dense city-state into a “city in the garden.”

With heights ranging from 80 to 160 feet and light displays that come alive at night, the Supertrees complement the nearby high-rises and add distinctive flair to the Singapore skyline.

Stalactites and stalagmites in a beautifully lit cave.
In the 18th century, a local fisherman from Sardinia spotted an opening in a cliff side while fishing off the coast.
The opening, which is generally a meter above sea level unless waters are rough, turned out to be a beautiful grotto featuring an abundance of giant stalactites and stalagmites.
Named after the Roman god of the sea, the local legend has since become a tourist attraction.
Within the grotto, tourists can visit a 120-meter-long saltwater lake.

| 6 |  +2Lençóis Maranhenses Dunes, Santo Amaro do Maranhão, Brazil 🇧🇷
A faux desert landscape in the middle of the jungle that sprouts oases during the rainy season.
Between the months of July and September, the depressions between the dunes fill with rainwater creating pools ranging from small ponds to deep lakes. Like any real desert, the 1,500 square kilometer area supports little plant life despite the rain, but the transient bodies of water amazingly populate with marine life each year as migratory birds accidentally deposit fish eggs in the waters.
The Lençóis Maranhenses Dunes are recognized as a national park.

A bronze statue of a low three-legged seat commemorates a piece of furniture that started a riot.
St. Giles Сathedral, the 900-year-old Church of Scotland, is situated along the Royal Mile in the capital city.
Inside this gothic and ornate house of worship are many objects depicting the long, and often times tumultuous, history of Scotland’s seat of government.
Designed by the Scottish artist Merilyn Smith in 1992, The Cutty Stool represents an event that allegedly took place on July 23, 1637.
The term “cutty” is a Lowland Scottish expression meaning short.

| 8 |  +2Katskhi Pillar, Katskhi, Georgia 🇬🇪
Small church on top of a huge rock column.
The Katskhi Pillar abruptly rises 40 meters from the hills of Central Georgia and looks similar to a giant’s club. Its mythical aura made it a place of worship since humans settled this area. Prior to the arrival of Christianity, the pillar served as a pagan holy place for a long time and was most likely used for fertility rites.
The Georgian Orthodox Church is currently building a new small church at the top of the rock column, which can be reached via a combination of scaffolding at the lower half and a vertigo-inducing iron ladder at the upper half of the pillar. The earthly remains of a believer, who died atop the pillar at an unknown date, are kept at the contemporary church building. Women are not allowed to climb to the top.

Houses are tucked between, on, and underneath giant boulders.
Defined by its landscape, Monsanto hangs off a mountaintop overlooking the Portuguese countryside, with views for miles.
The mountaintop has actually been extremely important strategic position since prehistoric times. It’s crowned by the remains of a Templar castle, which was partially destroyed by an explosion, in the 19th century.
The village has hardly changed in hundreds of years, and enjoys distinction in Portugal as a living museum.

A smashing blend of Gothic and Islamic ornamentation, the Mahabat Maqbara complex remains one of India’s best kept secrets.
This striking structure rising from out of nowhere is the mausoleum of Wazir Bahaduddinbhai Hasainbhai, one of the chief nobles in the Court of Nawab Mahabat Khan II of Junagadh.

| 11 |  +2Abandoned Chacaltaya Ski Resort, La Paz, Bolivia 🇧🇴
The world’s highest ski resort was deserted after an 18,000-year-old glacier melted away.
At 17,519 feet above sea level, the Chacaltaya Ski Resort was higher than the North Base Camp of Mount Everest. For decades it held the record as the world’s highest ski resort, and the resort’s restaurant is still recognized by Guinness as the highest restaurant in the world.
With the ice and snow melted, the skiers naturally stopped coming. The resort was soon shut down and abandoned, and its ski lifts shut down. Since then, the resort has sat like a freezing ghost town on the bare rocky slopes of Chacaltaya.

A spectacular cave and a beguiling lake.
Sami boasts two magnificent geological oddities: Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake. The short distance between the two allows tourists to visit both of these natural wonders in one day.
Between 11am and 1pm on sunny days, Lake Melissani is an otherworldly blue.
Those who have been fortunate enough to visit Drogarati Cave are treated to its beautiful stalagmites and stalactites.
The largest room in the cave, “Sala of Apotheosis,” is 900 meters square and illuminated. It is often used for concerts because of its outstanding acoustics.

Intensely colorful calcite pools in Southern China.
For 2.2 miles in the Huanglong Valley, naturally formed terraced hot spring pools gently flow between rugged mountains and forests. Filled with awe-inspiring creatures known only to China it has been dubbed “Fairy Land on Earth.”
Untouched forests gently slope toward the water, and Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys and Giant Pandas have made the fantasy world their home.
Huanglong is protected both nationally, and by UNESCO.

These pink granite water slides are the result of millions of years of erosion.
A shut-in is a place where water has carved smooth “slides” through soft rock, in this case Missouri Pink granite, and forms a canyon through which the waters flow. Missouri is home to several of these geological features, including the Johnson’s Shut-Ins in Lesterville, but none are so beautiful and mostly undisturbed as the Castor River site.

The site of a prehistoric settlement spanning millennia, complete with a reconstructed timber circle.
The Mawaki Site was continuously inhabited for over four millennia between 6,000-2,300 years ago, bearing witness to the dawn and twilight of the prehistoric Jōmon period of Japan.
Discovered in 1982-1983 during the pre-construction survey for a canal, the Mawaki Site contains several shell middens, mass graves, and the remains of a timber circle consisting of 10 chestnut poles, which has since been reconstructed on the site.
The diverse finds from the site include countless earthenware vessels, terra cotta idols, and skeletal remains.
Another fascinating artifact excavated from the Mawaki Site is a fragment of an ancient clay mask, the oldest of its kind known in Japan, likely once used in shamanistic rituals to ward off evil.

Rising up out of a weather-worn stone spire, the beacon looks like something straight out of a fantasy novel.
The lighthouse was first built in 1897.
The lighthouse was eventually rebuilt in the early 1990s . The replica became Greece’s first automated lighthouse, eliminating the need for an onsite keeper to operate the light. But even with the modern upgrade, the lighthouse still looks like something out of Dungeon and Dragons, with the winding staircase hewn from the rock itself, leading up to the door of the tower.

A French valley with forests so lush it was nicknamed "the Small Amazonia of the Pyrenees."
In addition to covering rocks and trees, lichens hang down from branches like tentacles, adding to the otherworldly feel of the place. Otters play in the river and vibrantly colored fire salamanders can be found among the ferns.
St. John’s wort, showy toothwort, and mother-of-the-evening are among the more colorful plant life. Resident trees include maples, chestnuts, and birches. There are also caves that, like the gorge itself, were created by the force of the river water.

Local lore says the devil built this beautiful medieval bridge to help a fleeing bandit.
According to local lore, a criminal was in dire need of a way to cross the river while fleeing the nearby village. He summoned the devil, who kindly said he’d help the man—for the small price of his soul, of course. The man agreed, and the devil created a temporary bridge that vanished before those pursuing the convict could cross as well.
Supposedly, the bandit felt so remorseful he later sought out a priest to repent. A virtuous priest took pity on the man and used his Rosary and a bit of holy water to expel the devil and turn the bridge into a permanent structure.

A seemingly unassuming palace near Budapest hides a stupendously decorated hall.
Ráday Palace sits in the middle of Pécel, and from outside it looks like a typical old mansion. This building was erected during the 18th century as the residence of the noble Ráday family.
The ground floor of the palace has various decorated halls, that showcase the history of this once-thriving cultural hotspot, and it is linked to a basement hosting a traditional kitchen with many old tools. However, the main attraction is the large main hall on the upper floor. Here, a breathtaking series of 18th-century frescoes depicting the allegories of science and arts, and various scenes from ancient mythology and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The frescoes were painted by Gedeon Ráday, who also gave the palace its current appearance.
