St. Bernard's Well, Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴
A beautiful Greco-Roman structure houses a well once believed to have healing powers.
Legend states it was discovered by a group of schoolboys who were out fishing sometime around 1760. But this became no ordinary well. In the latter part of the 18th century, locals believed the waters of this natural spring had medicinal healing properties.
It was eventually closed in the 1940s because the water contained arsenic and other impurities.

Hiding in the verdant hills of Wattens, Austria is a foliage-covered giant who spews a waterfall from his mouth and guards over a dozen fantastical crystal chambers beneath a hill.
And it is all owned by Swarovski.
Like something out of a fairy tale, the park’s main attraction is the “Chambers of Wonder” exhibition, which is contained within a green hill, the entrance of which is made to look like a crouching giant.

| 3 |  +2Teddy’s Juke Joint, Zachary, Louisiana 🇺🇸
One of the last remaining venues on the Old Chitlin’ Circuit is a kaleidoscopic music hall at the end of a dirt road.
Lloyd “teddy” johnson, proprietor of Teddy’s Juke Joint, will tell you he’s only ever had one address. It’s here, at the end of a dirt road off of Highway 61—one of the last remaining juke joints on the “Chitlin Circuit,” a word-of-mouth network of venues that welcomed Black musicians across the American South during segregation.
The venue is coated in year-round Christmas lights, disco balls, tinsel, CDs hanging from balloon strings, and music memorabilia illuminated by flashing bulbs; but personal effects like Teddy’s childhood tricycle, toy tow truck, and a photo of the owner as a young child adorn the walls as well. Ceiling fans make the whole place shimmer and dance—one visitor aptly described it as feeling “like [you’re] inside a kaleidoscope.”

This unreal Portuguese palace looks as though it's made from a pile of different castles.
Built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II, the palace was meant to be a summer home for the Portuguese royals. Ferdinand’s opulent tastes were imposed on the builders and designers, creating a schizophrenic manse that, at least from the outside, seemed to indulge any and all of the king’s passing tastes.
The interior of the palace was no less opulent or eclectic. Many of the rooms were designed to reflect a certain cultural influence ranging from Middle Eastern styles to the European Baroque.

| 5 |  +2Columns of the Temple of Augustus, Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸
The 2,000-year-old Roman columns are hidden within Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.
The temple was built to honor Emperor Augustus and once towered over the ancient Roman city of Barcino. It was constructed of sandstone from nearby Montjuïc Hill and at least partially plastered over. The 120-foot-long building was built in the first century. It was surrounded by numerous 30-foot-tall columns, but now only four remain.
Though they rest on bits of plinth from the original structure, the ancient building is otherwise gone.

| 6 |  +2Katskhi Pillar, Katskhi, Georgia 🇬🇪
Small church on top of a huge rock column.
The Katskhi Pillar abruptly rises 40 meters from the hills of Central Georgia and looks similar to a giant’s club. Its mythical aura made it a place of worship since humans settled this area. Prior to the arrival of Christianity, the pillar served as a pagan holy place for a long time and was most likely used for fertility rites.
The Georgian Orthodox Church is currently building a new small church at the top of the rock column, which can be reached via a combination of scaffolding at the lower half and a vertigo-inducing iron ladder at the upper half of the pillar. The earthly remains of a believer, who died atop the pillar at an unknown date, are kept at the contemporary church building. Women are not allowed to climb to the top.

Monasteries on rock pillars, once accessible only by frayed ropes.
In the foothills of the Pindus mountains, above the central Greek plains of Thessaly, is a series of geological wonders that stick out from the ground.
Wind, water, and the harsh temperatures have carved out a series of gigantic sandstone pillars, some of them hundreds of meters high.
What better place to establish a monastery then in, as Meteora is sometimes translated, “the heavens above”?
At its peak the complex included 20 monasteries, however only six of them remain today; five are for men only, and the sixth for women.

Glacial lake that mysteriously empties itself every year.
Even in a country like Kyrgyzstan, so blessed with stunning natural scenery, Merzbacher Lake is truly outstanding.
Every spring, when the frozen lake melts, the lake’s waters lap at the tongue of the glacier and successively breaks off chunks of ice. The lake filled with drifting icebergs is a spectacular sight, but that is not all there is to Merzbacher Lake.
The lake constitutes a phenomenon known as a proglacial lake, a lake dammed by a glacier.
Merzbacher Lake is highly exceptional since the lake repeatedly gets emptied, just to get refilled soon after.

Strange rock formations tower above the river that snakes through this enchanting Icelandic canyon.
At just over a mile long, it certainly doesn’t boast the enormous expanses of the world’s other mighty canyons. But what it may lack in size, it absolutely makes up for in beauty.
The canyon is made up of an assortment of crazy rock formations. They stretch skyward, flanking a river like gargantuan grass-clad guardians. A walking trail traces the top of the crags, leading to a certain spot that lets hikers feel as though they’re standing atop a kingdom of sublime natural wonders.

| 10 |  +2Preah Vihear Temple, Kantuot, Cambodia 🇰🇭
The Preah Vihear Temple is a gem of Cambodian temple architecture, although for a long time, many fought for this jewel to belong in Thailand’s crown.
A temple has existed on the site since the 9th century, but the elaborately detailed complex found here today dates back to around the 11th century. It was built by the Suryavarman kings who were replicating the glorious intent of the nearby temples at Angkor.
The whole complex is set up in a long horizontal line along the edge of the cliff, comprised of multiple structures, each impressive in their own right.

| 11 |  +2Ushaiqer Heritage Village, Ushaiqer, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
Abandoned station along an ancient pilgrimage route.
Ushaiqer is one of the oldest settlements in the region.
In the old times, it used to be a necessary stop for pilgrims coming from Kuwait, Iraq, and Iran and heading further west toward the holy sites of Islam. Ushaiqer first appears in the writings of Al-Hutay’a, an Arab poet that lived in the 7th century, but its origins are probably much older.
The idea of a “heritage village” brings to mind a place where one can observe a traditional lifestyle. Ushaiqer fits the bill in the sense that one can observe traditional architecture and visit a museum displaying ancient weapons, everyday utensils, embroidered clothing, and artisanal jewelry. The old section of Ushaiqer, however, is abandoned.

A spectacular cave and a beguiling lake.
Sami boasts two magnificent geological oddities: Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake. The short distance between the two allows tourists to visit both of these natural wonders in one day.
Between 11am and 1pm on sunny days, Lake Melissani is an otherworldly blue.
Those who have been fortunate enough to visit Drogarati Cave are treated to its beautiful stalagmites and stalactites.
The largest room in the cave, “Sala of Apotheosis,” is 900 meters square and illuminated. It is often used for concerts because of its outstanding acoustics.

Intensely colorful calcite pools in Southern China.
For 2.2 miles in the Huanglong Valley, naturally formed terraced hot spring pools gently flow between rugged mountains and forests. Filled with awe-inspiring creatures known only to China it has been dubbed “Fairy Land on Earth.”
Untouched forests gently slope toward the water, and Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys and Giant Pandas have made the fantasy world their home.
Huanglong is protected both nationally, and by UNESCO.

A faux desert landscape in the middle of the jungle that sprouts oases during the rainy season.
Between the months of July and September, the depressions between the dunes fill with rainwater creating pools ranging from small ponds to deep lakes. Like any real desert, the 1,500 square kilometer area supports little plant life despite the rain, but the transient bodies of water amazingly populate with marine life each year as migratory birds accidentally deposit fish eggs in the waters.
The Lençóis Maranhenses Dunes are recognized as a national park.

The site of a prehistoric settlement spanning millennia, complete with a reconstructed timber circle.
The Mawaki Site was continuously inhabited for over four millennia between 6,000-2,300 years ago, bearing witness to the dawn and twilight of the prehistoric Jōmon period of Japan.
Discovered in 1982-1983 during the pre-construction survey for a canal, the Mawaki Site contains several shell middens, mass graves, and the remains of a timber circle consisting of 10 chestnut poles, which has since been reconstructed on the site.
The diverse finds from the site include countless earthenware vessels, terra cotta idols, and skeletal remains.
Another fascinating artifact excavated from the Mawaki Site is a fragment of an ancient clay mask, the oldest of its kind known in Japan, likely once used in shamanistic rituals to ward off evil.

The larger of two volcanic peaks rising out of the crystalline waters of the Caribbean.
Soaring 2,500 feet from the clear blue waters of the Caribbean, two towering peaks dominate the skyline. The larger of these green-laden summits is known as Gros Piton and its smaller counterpart is Petit Piton. They border Soufrière, a colorful Saint Lucia town that once served as the country’s capital. The Pitons are volcanic plugs that were created when lava cooled within a vent of the currently-dormant volcanoes. The Pitons of Saint Lucia are among the largest of the world’s volcanic plugs.
In 2004, the Pitons were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Vibrant coral reefs cover nearly 60 percent of the surrounding marine area, which is home to 168 different species of finfish.
