Forget simple "ChatGPT, rewrite this in Rust" prompts. Canonical just partnered with the University of Bristol for a 3-year PhD project to build a rigorous, enterprise-grade C-to-Rust translation pipeline.
Instead of relying on standard LLMs that hallucinate memory dependencies, they are using a "neurosymbolic" approach combining AI with hardcore mathematical verification.
4-stage pipeline work :
🧩 Dependency-Aware Chunking : Breaks massive C codebases into manageable, context-aware pieces without losing global dependencies.
🤖 Idiomatic Translation : Uses models trained specifically on real-world C-to-Rust conversions to write safe, idiomatic Rust (not just C syntax dressed up in Rust keywords).
🛡️ Formal Verification : Uses aggressive fuzzing and mathematical equivalence checks to guarantee the Rust code behaves exactly like the C original.
🔧 Symbolic Program Repair : Automatically patches semantic mismatches if the verification phase detects a failure.
🎯 The Test Subjects?
They are playing on hard mode. The initial targets are AppArmor and snap-confine two deeply complex, security-critical components of Ubuntu.
While this is a research project and won't replace production code tomorrow, if this pipeline holds up, it could create a massive shift in how we modernize legacy Linux infrastructure.

Is a heavy backup job or runaway application consuming 99% of your server's resources? Instead of killing the process, you can throttle its CPU and RAM usage.
4 practical ways to control resource hogging in Linux :
1️⃣ Quick CPU Cap : cpulimit
Great for temporary throttling of background tasks (e.g., video rendering or database backups).
# Limit process PID 3271 to max 30% CPU usage
sudo cpulimit --pid 3271 --limit 30 &
# Launch a new heavy job directly with a 40% CPU limit
sudo cpulimit --limit 40 -e make -- make -j4
2️⃣ Persistent Limits for Services : systemd
The best & cleanest method for production services like Nginx or MySQL.
# Create a drop-in override for a service
sudo systemctl edit nginx
Add these lines :

CPUQuota=50%
MemoryMax=1G
Apply the changes :
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart nginx
3️⃣ Hard Kernel-Level Limits : cgroups (v2)
Enforces hard ceilings directly in the Linux kernel. If memory limit is exceeded, the kernel OOM killer stops it.

sudo renice 15 -p 3271
💡 Rule of Thumb :
* Use systemd for long-term server services.
* Use cpulimit for quick, temporary tasks.
* Use nice for non-urgent background scripts.
