| 2 | COLDCARD POSTMORTEM : WHAT'S NEXT?
Everything you should know about the Coldcard hack in plain language, no technical rabbit holes.
WHAT HAPPENED
A bug Coldcard's wallet generation technique (mainly Mk3, 2021 onward) created wallets using "weak randomness".
As a result, something that is "impossible to guess" became "easy to guess". This led to ~500 wallets hacked in under half an hour.
The scary part that bug was there for years without anyone noticing it. Note that it's a third case over the ast couple of months.
Thorchain, Zcash and not COLDCARD... In all those cases the bug was there for years.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
• Only a portion of @COLDCARDwallet devices are affected - but if you created your seed on a Coldcard, act as if yours is one of them.
• Important: importing your Coldcard-created seed into another wallet app does NOT help. The seed itself is weak. You need a NEW wallet created on a different device or app, then send/transfer the funds there.
• Other mainstream hardware wallets are NOT less safe because of this. This was one vendor's bug, not a flaw in hardware wallets as a concept. If you're searching for another hardware wallet we personally recommend @Trezor due to their long standing reputation in the industry.
HOW TO CHOOSE A WALLET (our take)
• Pick wallets built on documented, open standards. For hardware, Trezor is probably the best-equipped team in the industry. Ledger is big too, but has a history of privacy breaches.
• For software wallets, we (subjectively) recommend mobile wallets. Given the wallet is built per standards , modern mobile platforms offer the best out-of-the-box security. Combine that with basic security hygiene (regular OS updates, no porn browsing etc) you will get a fairly advanced level of security.
• Look for wallets with regular public audits. For instance, we pay for those ourselves - they're expensive but we believe they are needed to ensure capable external eyes are looking at your codebase.
• Look for endorsements from technical audiences. Back in the early days, some of the more through reviews we've been through were getting listed on resources like bitcoin dot org. Enormously grateful to the teama running those resources.
• if you have a large stash in self-custody then we recommend splitting that between 2-3 wallets/brands that meet standard criteria (see above). We personally, use @unstoppablebyhs for about 40% of our assets. despite that it's a product we build ourselves we also use @Trezor and @Ledger. There are other that we believe to be good mobile wallets out there. Do not keep all eggs in one basket is a good rule to follow in all aspects of life.
THE NEW REALITY
1) AI has made finding bugs dramatically easier - which is why we keep seeing flaws surface in code that sat in public view for years. Expect more of these, from everyone.
2) Open source projects are currently more exposed than closed source ones. You can't attack code that you don't see. So, AI scanning open source code puts a strain over a short term, but long term, open code that survives public scrutiny is the only thing that earns trust.
3) Finally, convincing people to self-custody just got harder. But pressure like this is what forges better security and better UX. Times like these set the new standards.
We just need to keep going!

Nobody plans on being forced to open their wallet (or phone) but the reality is that it does happen.
One user tells how duress mode got him through exactly that.
Under pressure to hand over his PIN, he entered his duress PIN instead. What opened looked like his main wallet. It wasn't. His real holdings stayed out of sight the whole time.
"When they demanded my PIN there I gave them the duress one. The guy went through the wallet but didn't take anything.

3) Human Factor
Many swap providers endup exposing users unknowingly.
If swap is not integrated correctly on the wallet side it may end up being unsafe for people coming from conflict zones.
For instance, an unhonest provider may simply confiscate funds of the users whose IPs originate from conflict zones. Not because of risk, but because they can get away with this.
A user in Palestine, Iran, Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan (and there are at least a dozen of other places like this...) have simply no legit means to question or appeal with the swap provider.
At Unstoppable we do it differently.
- we show clear risk profiles for each provider that makes it clear what risks are
- we don’t collect or pass your data to swap providers. we don't work with providers that insist on us passing the data.
- all quote requests go through our aggregator, which acts as a proxy between you and the provider.

| 17 |  The dark side of NO KYC crypto swaps you don't know about !
Most swap services for XMR (applies to all other as well) don’t ask for KYC.
Sounds good at first, but here’s what you don’t see.
1) No KYC, until there is KYC
Your funds get frozen and suddenly you’re asked to go through KYC. Either comply or lose your funds.
There are legit cases but also many many where funds endup confiscated because the provider knows the user has no real way to appeal.
That’s why :
- having a clear risk profile before the swap is critical. Users should understand risks before the swap.
- it’s important for users to understand that you’re not swapping with the wallet itself, but with a third-party provider, with its own rules.
2) Data Collection
Swap services collect users' data! Period.
In some cases without wallet provider even knowing about it.
When user requests a quote, the IP, device and other metadata get passed directly to the provider.

| 18 | ZCASH IRONWOOD ALERT!
Today we will be releasing a wallet app update update which will make Unstoppable Wallet compatible with today's planned Zcash upgrade (referred to as IRONWOOD)
Note that, right after Zcash network update the app will continue working and you will be able to use your Zcash wallet and ZEC on balance without any disruption.
Here are some thing to keep in mimd:
1) MIGRATION
In this version the wallet WILL NOT provide you an option to migrate the entire balance from old shielded pool to a new one.
We fill there is NO IMMEDIATE NEED or risk to migrate your balance and therefore will provide such option in the future update due in a few days.
2) TRANSACTIONS
Meanwhile, any shielded transaction you make after the IRONWOOD activation will work according to new rules .
The very first shielded transaction you make (to someone's or your own shielded address) will basically be migrating your old shielded balance from an old pool to a new one.
Later shielded transactions will try to use your shielded funds from a new pool if sufficient and if not will be utilizing (migrating) funds from an old pool.
So, you can basically complete the migration by sending the entire balance to self.
3) PRIVACY CONSIDERATIONS
Note that each migration transaction exposes the amounts being sent in that specific transaction and may potentially enable a bad actor to link that transaction to some IP address. The node receiving that transaction on the network will see the IP address from where it was sent
The easiest option to mitigate this is to enable TOR (Unstoppable wallet on Android has this option) or use a VPN like @nym.
4) NO RUSH
To sum up, do not rush to migrate, give the ironwood activate some time to settle, make a couple of self transfers first.
Just keep using ZEC normally.
