:: Shitoryu = Zawan-dachi :: Kung Fu = Unicorn stance :: Fitness = Dragon squat In Shitoryu Papuren kata, it appears prominently in the salutation, reflecting the form’s Chinese martial arts roots (Hakkaku Ken = White Crane Fist) and emphasizing balance, readiness, and fluid movement.

Seipai (十八) Seipai kata in Shitoryu represents a refined synthesis of Okinawan traditions, originally transmitted from Kanryu Higaonna and rooted in the principles of Naha-te, including strong stances, breath control, and internal power. When Kenwa Mabuni inherited this kata, he preserved its essence while expressing it through his broader training in both Naha-te and Shuri-te, introducing subtle adaptations that blended structure with speed and fluidity. The result is a uniquely Shitoryu interpretation that combines grounded power with agility, where techniques flow naturally and self-defense applications appear practical, direct, and effective, demonstrating a harmonious balance between hard and soft, and between rooted strength and dynamic movement.

Kime-geiko (決め稽古) literally means training that emphasizes decisive focus and finishing power, combining both mental and physical concentration at the moment of impact. 決め (kime) = focus, decisive finish, concentration of power. 稽古 (keiko) = training or practice.

Shitoryu “Mawari Ashi” in a Takedown (倒し技 Taoshi-waza) Combining Mawari Ashi footwork with a takedown requires precise timing and correct body movement. At first, the technique may look difficult, but proper practice develops control, balance, and effectiveness. Repetition is essential to apply the movement at the right moment and achieve a successful takedown. #mawariashi #takedown #shitoryu #taoshiwaza #shitokai #kumite #karate

小手支え受け "Kote Sasae Uke" Supported Forearm Block Kote Sasae Uke is a distinctive two-handed defensive technique found in Kosokun Sho, 公相君小, in Shitokai Shitoryu Karate. The main forearm receives and redirects the attack. The open supporting hand connects near the lower part of the forearm, reinforcing its structure and stability. #shitokai #shitoryu #kotesasaeuke #kosokunsho #karate #kata

Matsukaze (松風) Kata Matsukaze 松風 (“Wind in the Pines”). Master Kenwa Mabuni renamed the kata Matsukaze from its original name Wankan, a kata practiced in Okinawa's Tomari region . Matsukaze is considered an intermediate kata in Shito-ryu. It includes both attacking and defensive strategies performed simultaneously at various stages. It is stated that the phrase "Wind in the Pines" implies strength but adaptability in the face of adversity, similar to a pine tree on top of a mountain facing strong winds. As a result, all movement is forward, either driving the opponent backwards or remaining still.

Nipaipo is an advanced Shitoryu kata with strong roots in Chinese White Crane boxing. Master Kenwa Mabuni learned the kata from Master Go Kenki, then simplified it and taught it to his students. Nipaipo combines flowing circular actions with sudden explosive techniques, rapid open-hand combinations, evasive body movements, trapping, controlling, and short-range striking. Nipaipo is one of the four Shitei, or mandatory, kata. Practising and mastering this kata is important in Shitō-ryū Karate. #nipaipo #shitoryu #shitokai #kenwamabuni #gokenki

Kicks develop more than flexibility and power. They strengthen balance, coordination, control, confidence, and many other important qualities. Do not train only your favourite techniques. Work on your weaknesses and develop both your hands and legs. Strong legs create strong movement. Good kicks create more options. Never neglect your kicks.

Naha-te (那覇手Okinawan: Naafa-dii) Nahate originating in the city of Naha in Okinawa, Naha-te is one of the three major systems of Okinawan Karate (Okinawa-te), alongside Shuri-te and Tomari-te. Suparinpei (壱百零八) Kata Suparinpei (壱百零八, also knows as Pechurin and Hyakuhachiho) is one of the original Kata from RyuRuKo Sensei while he was in Fuzchou in the Fukien Province of Southern China and was handed down to Kanryo Higaonna Sensei. Visually it is similar to the Chinese White Crane Kata and the Kempo Kata of the Dragon! Its Okinawan counterpart is Pechurin. Superinpei is the number 108 in Chinese and the Kata itself is sometimes called or translated as; 1. 108 Hands 2. The final 108 hands 3. 108 Techniques. And has special significance in Buddhism. Superinpei is Naha-te’s longest Kata containing more applications and techniques than any other Naha-te Kata and uses classic breathing however silent [Ibuki]. Yes still can executed with perfect form and end in Zanshin. Many of the techniques in this Kata can also be found in earlier Naha-te Kata (Seisan and Sanseiru, etc…). Master Kanazawa of Shotokan and Keiyo University of Tokyo, add this kata to their associations and called it Hyakuhachiho.

In the Shitokai version of Heian Godan, the arm movement begins with Sasoi-di (Sasoi-te), an inviting action used to draw the opponent’s attack and establish contact. The arms then form Chudan Kosa Uke. Both forearms cross at the middle level to protect the centreline, redirect the attack, and control the opponent’s arm. This sequence teaches a smooth transition from invitation, to contact, to control. Both arms must coordinate with the hips, posture, and body movement with correct timing.

Karatedo(空手道) is not just a martial art. It is a lifelong practice of shaping the self. Its depth is not revealed through victory or rank, but through repetition, restraint, and refinement. What makes it unique is its demand for internal honesty: no shortcuts, no pretending. You are what you train.
