🎼 "Es gibt ein Reich" is the famous monologue of Ariadne from the opera Ariadne auf Naxos (Op. 60) by the German composer Richard Strauss (1864–1949), premiered in 1912. Strauss, one of the most famous composers of the transition from late Romanticism to Modernism, left behind a vast oeuvre of more than 250 works. Thus, the former president of the Reichsmusikkammer undeniably ranks among the most outstanding composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Ariadne is abandoned on the island of Naxos and sings in sorrow over her deserted state, a realm where everything is pure. The aria begins ethereal and calm, then escalates into a visionary ecstasy of redemption, demanding great expressiveness, dramatic power, and secure high notes from the sopranos.👈
👌 Amy Ní Fhearraigh is an up-and-coming Irish lyric soprano known for her versatile performances in both classical and contemporary opera repertoire. Amy Ní Fhearraigh and Richard Strauss: a generation-spanninig dreamlike Celtic-Germanic combination! 👏

🎼 The Latvian soprano Kristīne Opolais is considered one of the most prominent opera performers of our time and is possibly the leading Puccini soprano of the present. Opolais made history at the Metropolitan Opera when she made two major role debuts in just 18 hours. After performing as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly in the evening, she stepped in as Mimì in La Bohème the next day in a matinee broadcast worldwide in cinemas. The German-Austrian Jonas Kaufmann is considered one of the world's most significant tenors today.
👌 With their acting intensity and musical elegance, the two set a standard with "O soave fanciulla" (oh, sweet girl), one of the most famous love duets in operatic history, from the first act of the 1896 premiere of Puccini's La Bohème.

🎼 Krútňava, by Slovak composer Eugen Suchoň (1908 – 1993), is the most significant Slovak national opera, composed between 1941 and 1949. The novella "Za vyšným mlynom" ("Behind the Upper Mill") by Milo Urban served as the literary basis. Suchoň blends late Romantic harmony and 20th-century musical modernism with Slovak folk music. Shortly after the acclaimed premiere in 1949, the work came under the scrutiny of communist censorship.
👏 A psychologically profound and religiously searching balladic drama set in a rural milieu, centred around a classic love triangle: Jano Štelina is murdered out of jealousy by his rival Ondrej Zimoň. Ondrej conceals the act and marries the pregnant girl Katrena. Driven by heavy guilt and the pressure from the unyielding father of the victim, Ondrej eventually confesses the act, leading to a purifying catharsis and forgiveness.
👌Here is an excerpt with Jolana Fogašová & Jozef Benci. Jolana Fogašová is a renowned Slovak opera singer and vocal pedagogue, distinguished by the rare and flexible soprano spinto d'agilità voice type, which allows her a wide repertoire ranging from dramatic to technically complex, agile roles. Jozef Benci is a renowned Slovak opera and oratorio singer in the bass range, particularly known for his velvety timbre and expressive voice.

🎨 The Spanish Cistercian nun Isabel Guerra Peñamaría (born 1947) is a painter associated with hyperrealism, whose paintings radiate an almost spiritual luminosity. She is rightly called "La pintora de la luz" (the painter of light). The idea of the artistic genius applies to her like few others; Isabel Guerra Peñamaría refined her talent solely through self-taught study of the great masters, and not through a classical academic education.
👌 Her speciality is young women and children, as well as everyday scenes or still lifes, which not only exude inner calm but also derive their charm from a light-filled depiction that elevates these images to graceful appearances.

🎼 "Ha, wie will ich triumphieren" is a famous bass aria for Osmin in Act 3 of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Singspiel "Die Entführung aus dem Serail", which premiered on July 16, 1782, in Vienna. It is considered one of the most difficult arias ever, featuring coloraturas, abrupt octave leaps between the upper and lower registers, as well as extended low notes, including a prolonged low D2 that must be held for several measures, one of the lowest notes required in opera.
👌 The German opera singer (bass) Josef Greindl (1912 - 1993) gained fame with a performance of it under the Austrian conductor Karl Böhm (1894 – 1981), father of the famous actor Karlheinz Böhm. In 1945, the Allied occupying authorities removed him from the position of director of the Vienna State Opera due to his close ties to the Nazi regime and imposed a performance ban on him. Josef Greindl sang nearly all of Richard Wagner's major bass roles at the Bayreuth Festival Theatre between 1943 and 1969, and after 1945 he was not subject to any performance ban, although he was a member of the NSDAP.

🎼 The opera "Werther" (Drame lyrique) by the French composer Jules Massenet (1842 – 1912) is a masterpiece of French late Romanticism based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's famous epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther," the first million-bestseller in literary history, which premiered at the Vienna Court Opera in 1892. The famous letter scene "Werther! Qui m'aurait dit" deals with Charlotte's deep, painful love for Werther.
👏 For the musical delight, the performance by Dr. phil. Marie-Luise Reinhard, who is not only an outstanding classical singer (mezzo-soprano/alto) but also an equally outstanding German classical philologist (Latinist), capable of giving lectures or communicating in fluent Latin. – THIS is European educational culture in its full glory! 🙏

🙏 On the deeply sad occasion of the passing of Darina Laščiaková (1931–2026) at the age of 94, on August 12, let us honour this jewel of Slovak folk culture. The folk singer and ethnographer travelled through her homeland to record and rescue from oblivion old traditions, customs, and songs in direct contact with the people.
👌 The Slovak Minister of Culture, Martina Šimkovičová, who deserves to be honoured as "Folk-Minister of Culture" like no other in Europe, described Darina Laščiaková as a woman who understood and lived these songs; who was able to find in them the history, the memory, and the soul of the Slovak nation. 🇸🇰
🎼 Let us remember her with this performance from 2006 with the famous Slovak ensemble SĽUK:

🎼 „Nur der Schönheit weiht ich mein Leben” is the German title of „Vissi d’arte“, one of the most famous opera arias in the history of music, from the opera „Tosca“ by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924). Puccini is regarded as a leading exponent of so-called musical verismo, an Italian operatic style which, by eschewing the mythical, depicts real, often harsh life through a passionate and direct musical language.
👌 The performance by Maria Cebotari (1910–1949) is utterly enchanting. 🙏 The exceptionally talented soprano Maria Cebotari, who died far too young, should not be consigned to oblivion simply because Adolf Hitler – who, in his youth in Linz and Vienna, came to appreciate Italian opera, and thus also Giacomo Puccini – was an ardent admirer of the Romanian opera singer born in Bessarabia (Chișinău).
Lyric excerpt:
🎶 “To beauty alone I have dedicated my life, to art alone in love and song! Never have I caused any creature sorrow; wherever I saw misery, I soothed the pain...” 🎶

🎼 The „Ospedale della Pietà“ in 18th-century Venice was an orphanage for girls which, thanks to the musical direction of the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741), became one of the most famous music conservatoires in Europe. Antonio Vivaldi composed countless violin concertos and sacred works specifically for the girls of the Pietà to showcase their virtuosity.
👌 In 2015, the renowned French vocal and instrumental ensemble „Les Cris de Paris“ performed Vivaldi’s works for the Pietà at the Festival d’Ambronay, in the historic setting of the local Benedictine monastery, Notre-Dame Abbey, under the baton of Geoffroy Jourdain. – A concert experience of heavenly quality! 🙏

🎼 This year’s Bayreuth Wagner Festival 2026 (July 25 to August 26) is entirely dedicated to the festival’s 150th anniversary. To mark that anniversary, there will be a special premiere at the legendary Festspielhaus on the Green Hill, with Richard Wagner’s early work „Rienzi“ being performed there for the first time.
Given that, throughout the whole post-war period, the Bayreuth Festival has consistently been the subject of so-called „reappraisal“ of its Nazi past, this comes as something of a surprise, as „Rienzi“ was, after all, Hitler’s favourite opera. 🫣
😉 Given such artistic openness, it may well be permissible to recommend excerpts from „Rienzi“ from a 1942 performance by the Berlin Staatskapelle, featuring, amongst others, Max Lorenz, Hitler’s favourite tenor; the famous scene with „Rienzi’s Prayer“ from 49:50 / 53:20 min.

👌 Alexa Vogel is an outstanding Swiss coloratura soprano, distinguished by her exceptionally high vocal range, an authentic stage presence and a broad repertoire ranging from Baroque ensemble singing through virtuoso Romantic opera arias to contemporary works.
🎼 Her performance of the Queen of the Night’s aria „Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen“ from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756–1791) opera „The Magic Flute“ (1791) is truly impressive. This aria is one of the most difficult pieces to sing and is rightly regarded as THE gold standard of coloratura. It demands extremely high notes, up to the high F³, and absolute rhythmic precision.

🎼 The Montenegrin national anthem, „Oj svijetla majska zoro“ (Oh, bright dawn of May), was already a popular folk song in various versions even before it was adopted as the national anthem. The original lyrics were written in 1937 by Sekula Drljević (1884–1945), a fascist Montenegrin politician who is regarded as the best-known sympathiser of National Socialism in Montenegro.
👌 The performance by the exceptional Montenegrin soprano Tamara Radjenović – undoubtedly one of the most outstanding sopranos of our time, with a legacy that will stand the test of time – is quite simply incomparable. In my view, it is even a spiritually overwhelming artistic delight! 🙏

🎼 „Der Wanderer“, composed in 1816, is one of the best-known art songs by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797–1828). It is based on the melancholic poem „Des Fremdlings Abendlied“ by Georg Philipp Schmidt von Lübeck and is regarded as a musical masterpiece of German Romanticism. In a sense, it has taken on renewed relevance today, as it deals with the wistful search for a carefree, idealised homeland.👈
👌 The performance by the legendary singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925–2012), one of the most significant German baritones of the 20th century and arguably the most outstanding interpreter of classical art songs, is surely hard to beat. With more than 400 recorded albums to his name, Fischer-Dieskau ranks among the most frequently recorded classical vocalists in the history of music.👏

🎼 Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770), born in Piran, Slovenia, was a violinist, composer and music theorist. Tartini’s style initially followed the Baroque tradition and evolved into a virtuosic pre-Classical style. The „Tartini tones“—combination tones produced when two different notes are played simultaneously—were named after him.
👌 The Devil’s Trill Sonata in G minor from 1730, for solo violin and basso continuo, is one of Tartini’s best-known works. According to Tartini, the sonata’s creation was preceded by a dream the composer had, in which the devil played a sonata of exquisite beauty, which Tartini attempted to recreate upon waking. Whether he was able to stand up to the devil, we do not know; but it is undeniable that he succeeded in creating a work of extraordinary excellence.
🙏 The admirable performance by the Swiss-Latvian violin prodigy Ilva Eigus, who was just 13 at the time, might also suggest that she is in league with supernatural forces.

🏛 Proportion in harmony, stirring aesthetics, and devoted craftsmanship form the timeless triad of Occidental architecture, which even today not only fills the viewer with wonder but also inspires creative impulses to transcend oneself. Heritage and mission manifest themselves in Occidental architecture, which is far more than mere utilitarian rationality, as it resonates with its entire environment across generations.

🎼 Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat is one of his best-known vocal works and a musical setting of Mary’s biblical hymn of praise. There are two versions: the original version in E-flat major from 1723, which was conceived for Christmas Vespers in Leipzig, and the better-known, revised version in D major from 1733.
👌 The fantastic performance by the talented Slovenian opera singer Mojca Bitenc Križaj could lead one to believe that Bach composed this work just for her. Mojca Bitenc Križaj is not only an exceptional European soprano and celebrated soloist with the SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, but also completed a degree in medicine alongside her musical career. She completed her master’s degree with the highest honours, summa cum laude, and was awarded the Prešeren Student Prize.
