Established in 1938 as part of the MET, the Cloisters are a European medieval art and architecture museum located in Fort Tryon Park in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. The Cloisters focus on Romanesque and Gothic periods in the setting of predominantly French monasteries. The museum is centered around its 4 cloisters (Cuxa, Bonnefort, Trie, and St. Guilhem) originally acquired by American sculptor George Grey Bernard in France prior to 1913. His collection was moved to New York and bought for the establishment of the museum by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Parts of abbeys and communes were disassembled stone by stone, shipped to New York City, and reconstructed for the museum. The museum holds about 5,000 works of art and architecture dating from the 12-15th centuries. Out of the thousands of pieces, the most famous is arguably the Flemish “Hunt of the Unicorn” tapestry (c. 1495)
