BBG - Stocks joined bonds lower as a drop in oil prices did little to allay Wall Street’s concerns that still-elevated energy costs could fuel inflation and spur Federal Reserve rate hikes. The 30-year rate surpassed 5.61% on Tuesday to touch a level last seen in 2002, returning deeper into territory that had long been the norm before the low-rate era spanning the global financial crisis and pandemic. The leg higher came as inflationary angst and hefty corporate-debt supply weighed on the market. It’s the latest in a series of milestones for the $32 trillion Treasuries market, which is in the throes of a months-long slide. Government debt has been flailing around the world as elevated oil prices — tied to the war in the Middle East — ripple through the global economy, pushing investors to bet central banks including the Federal Reserve will further raise interest rates. Those expectations moderated Tuesday in response to comments by John Williams, president of the Fed’s New York bank. Williams said “one further upward adjustment” to the central bank’s target range for a US overnight lending rate “may be appropriate late this year” to contain inflation. Market-implied expectations have been for at least one quarter-point rate increase by year-end — as soon as at the next meeting in October — and close to three more by mid-2027. The US two-year yield, more sensitive than longer maturities to changes in the Fed outlook, declined as much as 5 bps before settling around 4.89% after Williams’s comment. Most companies in the S&P 500 fell, with the gauge posting back-to-back losses. The S&P 500 Index closed 0.2% lower in New York, extending declines to a second straight session. The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index posted a 0.2% gain. The dollar rose 0.2%. The euro hit its weakest in 16 months. Brent crude fell 2.8% to $102 per barrel as the Trump administration ordered another release of oil from emergency reserves amid a stalemate in US-Iran talks. WTI crude fell 3.9%. Spot gold rose 1.4%. The yield on 10-year Treasuries advanced 1 bp to 5.25%. Bitcoin was little changed. In economic news, US job openings fell to a five-month low, suggesting employers grew more cautious about expanding their workforces toward the end of the summer, while layoffs remained subdued. Consumer confidence dropped to the lowest level since 2014. Equity-index futures pointed to gains in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, while contracts for Australia were little changed. US stock futures edged higher after the underlying benchmarks finished little changed. A rally in US semiconductor stocks and President Donald Trump’s rejection of regulations on artificial intelligence may boost Asian shares linked to the AI theme.
