The South Korean and US AI trades are becoming increasingly synchronized: The 60-day correlation between the KOSPI and Nasdaq 100 index is up to +0.46, the highest since July 2024. This marks a sharp reversal from a negative correlation of -0.20 recorded in March. By comparison, the 5-year average is just +0.16 or nearly one-third the 60-day metric. Furthermore, the Nasdaq 100's sensitivity to declines in South Korean stocks is up to its highest level since 1990. At the same time, the MSCI World Index's sensitivity to the South Korean market is up to its highest in 4 years. In other words, declines in South Korean equities are increasingly serving as an early read on US and global equity risk appetite, particularly in technology stocks. The AI trade has never been more global. https://x.com/kobeissiletter/status/2079362470267818031?

Bank of China Becomes Singapore’s First Chinese Primary Dealer The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has appointed Bank of China (Singapore Branch) as a Primary Dealer for Singapore Government Securities (SGS), making it the first Chinese bank to receive this status. Primary Dealers are key participants in Singapore’s bond market. They are required to: * Participate actively in SGS and Treasury Bill auctions. * Provide continuous buy and sell quotes to support market liquidity. * Help develop and promote Singapore’s government bond market. MAS said the appointment reflects Bank of China’s strong capabilities in fixed-income markets and is expected to strengthen Singapore’s bond market while supporting growing financial links between Singapore and China. With this appointment, the number of SGS Primary Dealers increases to 13, joining existing dealers such as DBS, OCBC, UOB, HSBC, Citibank, Barclays and other major international banks. For retail investors, nothing changes. Individuals can continue to buy SGS bonds and T-bills through participating banks as before. Why it matters * It marks a milestone in Singapore–China financial cooperation. * It increases competition and liquidity in the SGS market. * It further reinforces Singapore’s position as a leading Asian fixed-income and financial centre.

BBG - Most shares in the S&P 500 retreated, though a gauge of chipmakers bounced after sinking into a bear market. In a volatile session, US crude settled near $83. Worries that higher energy costs could boost inflation spurred bond losses. Gilts sank after new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham unnerved investors over his approach to the country’s finances. President Donald Trump vowed that Iran “will pay” for killing three US soldiers in recent days, even as mediators proposed a new truce. Tensions remained high as Tehran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen threatened to blockade Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%. The Nasdaq 100 was little changed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed. The yield on 10-year Treasuries advanced 4 bps to 4.59%. Spot gold fell 0.2%. Bitcoin rose 0.8%. This week brings the first results from the megacap group, and pressure is building for the companies to justify AI investments. Tesla Inc. and Alphabet Inc. kick off big tech’s reporting season Wednesday. Then, Microsoft Corp., Meta Platforms Inc., Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. hit the following week.
