Sixteen passengers, including four children, became trapped inside four suspended cabins after strong winds and heavy rain forced the cableway to stop unexpectedly. As the line stalled, additional gondolas slowly rolled towards those already stranded, creating a frightening mid-air pile-up as the cabin hangers ground against one another. Video from the scene showed the gondolas swaying high above the river while anxious passengers waited for help. The cabins remained suspended for more than an hour, with many fearing one of them could become detached. Specialist rescue teams used ropes and harnesses to evacuate passengers one by one, lowering them safely to the ground. Medical personnel checked those rescued, with officials reporting no serious injuries. The cableway, which opened in 2012, is one of Russia's best-known aerial transport links and crosses the Volga River between Nizhny Novgorod and Bor. It serves as both a tourist attraction and a vital commuter route. Authorities said the shutdown was triggered during severe weather conditions and have launched an investigation into the malfunction. Despite the terrifying ordeal, all 16 passengers were safely rescued.
