The warrior aristocracy of Bronze Age Europe were buried in warrior graves with his personal weaponry - like daggers, swords, and spears. But there were other objects in these graves like hair combs, bronze razors and tweezers, cloak pins, and awls for tattooing the skin, that all speak to a profound interest in clothing, personal grooming and in adorning the warrior. So what can this all tell us about this aristocracy, the beliefs and practices of these elite men, and the nature of masculinity in prehistory? Find out by watching this video!

I'm sure this is supposed to be a joke but it makes a number of fundamental errors. Firstly, the Beaker people migrations into the British Isles did not come from the Tagus estuary or the Iberian peninsula. Instead, Beaker people came overwhelmingly from the Lower Rhine region, as well as parts of modern France. Also, they did not "row" on "improvised rafts". Europeans had been expert seafarers since the Mesolithic, exploring distant and storm battered hebridean islands paddling dugout canoes. The Neolithic people who came after were also expert seafarers, even bringing over pigs, sheep, and cattle in their vessels, which may have included large skin boats. And the Beaker people likewise travelled in proper vessels and maintained regular trade of people and goods along the Atlantic coasts and across the Channel. Finally, ceramic pottery had been in Britain since 4000 BC, 1500 years before the Beaker people. Humour must have some foundation in truth or else it simply ain't funny, is it.

Another reconstruction of the Bush Barrow Chieftain by Ancient Europeans. This is WAY better than that one Stonehenge museum did of that broken down weak looking old man in a dim hut. The Bush Barrow Chad was a wealthy and powerful warrior lord with an array of epic weapons and stunning gold. He even had a knife dating back about four centuries to the time of the first Bell Beaker people to settle around Stonehenge, perhaps a sign he belonged to an ancient ruling lineage. This was his homeland, won by his fathers, in whose mighty company he would not shame. Follow Ancient Europeans on Instagram here.

Genetic breakdown for the Early Viking Age Salme Ship Burial samples of Saaremaa, Estonia Believed to have originated in the Mälaren region of Central Sweden, the Salme ship burial represents one of the earliest known instances of an attempted Viking raid. Most of the individuals aboard these ships appear to have died in battle, likely at the hands of the local Oeselians. The Yamnaya lifestyle was characterised by massively increased mobility, compared to those Pontic Steppe societies before c. 3500 BC. Not only in wagons but also in river transport up and down the mighty rivers crossing the steppe - Dnieper, Don, Volga, Ural - but also around the shores of the Black Sea. The coastal trade linked the steppe people with Old Europe around the lower Danube in the west and on the eastern shores there was a trade route passing the Caucasus, and so ultimately linked the steppe societies with Mesopotamia. David Anthony talks about this.
