🔶 Phad paintings are unique because as per traditions, a thirty feet long and five feet wide work is done only be using natural vegetable colours. ✅ Additionally, material like squirrel hair is also used. ✅ The essence of these paintings is that they are completely natural.  👉Yet, this has, in recent years, proven to be detriment to the popularity of Phad paintings because of a scarcity of these natural colours. 👉Preserving this wonderful form of art is what motivated Shree Lal ji Joshi, a world-renowned Phad artist and Padma Shree and Shilpguru award winner. 🔰The art itself is more than seven hundred years old 🔰 Scale of the figures in the painting depicts their social status of the character in the story. 🔰 What is also interesting is that the figures face each other, not the audience.

🔷 Phad painting or phad is a style religious scroll painting and folk painting, practiced in Rajasthan state. 🔷 This style of painting is traditionally done on a long piece of cloth or canvas, known as phad. The narratives of the folk deities of Rajasthan, mostly of Pabuji and Devnarayan are depicted on the phadss. 🔷 The Bhopas, the priest-singers traditionally carry the painted phads along with them and use these as the mobile temples of the folk deities, who are worshipped by the Rebari community of the region. -----Traditionally the phads are painted with vegetable colors---- 🔰 Themes of sug paintings :  Ramcharitmanas, Gita Govinda, Kumārasambhava, Bhagavad Gita and Hanuman Chalisa. ✅ The art of phad painting was exclusively practiced by the Joshi community. ✅ However, in 1960, Shree Lal Joshi opened a school called Joshi Kala Kendra for everyone to learn this art style. Presently, the school is called Chitrashala.

The Chitrashala, which is also known as the Ummed Mahal, is a part of the Garh Palace. It was built in the 18th Century, and forms a set of rooms on an elevated podium above the garden courtyard. The famous Chitra Shala in Bundi provides a colourful glimpse of history.   These splendid paintings in the Chitrashala are par excellence and can be compared with probably the best anywhere in the world. Bundi painting is an important school of the Rajasthani style of Indian miniature painting that originated in the princely state of Bundi, located between Jaipur and Udaipur.

The Bundi School is an important school of the Rajasthani style of Indian miniature painting that lasted from the 17th to the end of the 19th century in this princely state of Bundi ruled by Hadoti Rajputs. One of the earliest examples of the Bundi Paintings is the Chunar Ragamala painted in 1561. Bundi paintings emphasized on hunting, court scenes, festivals, processions, life of nobles, lovers, animals, birds and scenes from Lord Krishna's life. The Bundi School had a close association with the Mughal style yet it was never fundamental to the evolution and growth of Bundi paintings, however the delicacy of the Mughal style was also not abandoned.
