Ethiopia New Mineral Refinery ----- @EthEAG Ethiopia has inaugurated a major new mineral-processing facility: the National Precious Metals Refinery at Bole Lemi Special Economic Zone in Addis Ababa. It is designed to help Ethiopia refine gold and silver domestically instead of exporting less-processed minerals and importing higher-value products. This is an important step in Ethiopia's ambition to capture more value from its mineral resources. However, the key measure of success will not simply be the refinery's announced capacity; it will be how much it actually processes, how much foreign exchange Ethiopia retains, and how effectively the facility supports formal mining and local industry. A US$50 million refinery with majority Ethiopian ownership and more than 600 tonnes of annual processing capacity. Actual economic benefits will depend on how much it processes and exports.
