Here’s how America went from one giant continent to being split in two by the English-speaking world: 1. The Single Continent Era (1507 – Late 1800s) In 1507, German mapmaker Martin Waldseemüller created a world map and labeled the new landmass “America” in honor of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. For centuries it was viewed as one continuous continent, distinct from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Even standard British and American schoolbooks taught the single-continent model well into the 19th century. 2. The Panama Canal Split (1914) For a long time the only thing connecting the northern and southern landmasses was the narrow Isthmus of Panama.
