During a discussion at the Air Service World Congress 2024, Managing Director of Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) Ibrahim Shareef talked about plans of seaplane operations during the night. Seaplanes operations are generally not conducted at night due to several challenges and safety concerns. At night, the lack of natural light makes it difficult for pilots to see obstacles in the water, such as floating debris, other vessels, or even marine life. Unlike airports, which are equipped with runway lights and other navigation aids, water bodies typically lack such infrastructure, making it harder for pilots to navigate safely. Landing on water requires precise judgment and visual cues, which are significantly reduced at night. At present even VFR operations in Maldives is not allowed in night. Advancements in technology could potentially address some of these challenges however the current limitations and safety concerns make night operations for seaplanes impractical and risky.
