It might save your life, and the lives of other people too. 🇬🇧 pull up If a vehicle such as a car or a taxi pulls up, it stops. Examples: pull up I told the taxi driver to pull up outside the post office. pull up As the truck pulled up at the intersection, its brakes made a loud hissing sound. 🇬🇧 redneck a lower-class white person from a rural background Examples: We were driving through Alabama when we saw some rednecks riding in the back of a pick-up truck drinking whiskey from a bottle. 🇬🇧 lay down the law If you lay down the law, you tell people what they should do in a forceful and stern way. Examples: After we lost our third game in a row, our coach got really angry and laid down the law and said we had to try harder or we'd be out the door. Shelley's parents laid down the law after she got home late and grounded her for a month. 🇬🇧 end in to have a certain result at the end of something Examples: end in sth The two countries couldn't agree on how to solve the problem, so the negotiations ended in a stalemate. end in sth The U.S. government's policy of making alcohol illegal in the 1920's ended in failure and an increase in organised crime. 🇬🇧 drag something boring, tiresome or troublesome Examples: Getting up at five-thirty in the morning in the middle of winter is such a drag. 🇬🇧 a quick fix If something is a quick fix, it's a quick and easy, but usually short-term, solution to a problem. Examples: Tania wants to lose weight, but she wants a quick fix like taking a pill instead of eating better and exercising more. I can tie your car's exhaust pipe up with a bit of wire, but it's just a quick fix. You'll have to get it fixed properly as soon as possible. 🇬🇧 move out If you move out, you leave the place in which you've been living or working, and move to a new place to live or work. Examples: move out We've got three children, and two of them have already moved out of home, and the third one is planning to move out soon. move out of sth As soon as the new building is finished, we'll move out of our old office and into the new one. 🇬🇧 el cheapo very cheap Examples: We always stay in those el cheapo motels because all we need is somewhere to sleep. 🇬🇧 the real McCoy You can say something is the real McCoy if it's genuine, and not a fake or a copy. Examples: You only paid $50 for a Gucci handbag? Well it's obviously not the real McCoy then, is it. The duck liver pate was the real McCoy. It tasted so much better than the stuff in tins they call duck liver pate back home. 🇬🇧 fire up to create enthusiasm or excitement, usually among a group of people or a crowd Examples: fire up sb The coach fired up his players with his half-time talk, and they tried much harder in the second half. be fired up After being fired up by their leaders' speeches, the protesters marched to government house. 🇬🇧 fib a small, harmless lie (n.) | to tell a small, harmless lie (v.) Examples: I can tell you're fibbing because you're trying not to smile! We told our youngest child a little fib about where our pet dog went when he died. 🇬🇧 over your head If something you hear or read is over your head, or goes over your head, you don't understand it because the language or the ideas are too advanced for you. Examples: I tried listening to a show on the radio about modern physics, but most of it was over my head and I gave up after about ten minutes. Jerry told a really funny joke about the economics of the cheese industry, and it went right over Tom's head. He didn't even smile. 🇬🇧 hear from If you hear from someone, they call you, email you or contact you in some other way. Examples: hear from sb Have you heard from Kyle lately? I haven't heard from him for a week or two. hear from sb I hear from my kids at least once a week. They usually email, but sometimes they phone. 🇬🇧 vac vacation, holiday Examples: Are you going overseas in the long vac? I'm looking for a job over the vac. 🇬🇧 a shot in the arm You can say something is a shot in the arm if it gives a person or an organisation renewed energy or enthusiasm. Examples: Getting a grant from the Arts Council was a much-needed shot in the arm for the orchestra. We all agree that the economy needs a shot in the arm, but we can't agree on exactly what it should be. 🇬🇧 keep on If you keep somebody on, you continue to employ them. Examples: keep sb on If I could, I'd keep everybody on, but unfortunately we can't afford to pay all our staff at the moment. keep on sb We'll do our best to keep on everyone who's been here for over five years. 🇬🇧 job an operation or procedure to make someone or something look better Examples: I'm going to get a new paint job done on my car. 🇬🇧 a jack of all trades If you're a jack of all trades, you have many skills and can do many different jobs. Examples: Jivad's a real jack of all trades. He knows all about computers, can do graphic design and write advertising copy, and knows a lot of other stuff too. She became a jack of all trades because she was interested in learning about so many different things. 🇬🇧 butt out If you want to tell someone quite forcefully to mind their own business, you can tell them to butt out. Examples: butt out I was having an argument with my girlfriend when Pete told us to cool it, so I told him to butt out. butt out My sons were having a fight about something when their older sister tried to get them to stop. They both got angry with her and told her to butt out. 🇬🇧 bugger a disliked or pitiful person, usually a man Examples: That stupid bugger who lives upstairs has stolen my newspaper again! 🇬🇧 keep your nose clean If you keep your nose clean, you stay out of trouble by making sure you don't do anything wrong. Examples: Our son Michael is in trouble with the police again. I really wish he'd learn to keep his nose clean. It's important for sport's stars to keep their noses clean because they make a lot of money for endorsing products, and they could lose this income if they got into trouble with the law. 🇬🇧 slow down to become slower, or to make someone or something go slower Examples: slow down You're walking too fast. Could you slow down a bit? slow down sth/sb The poor economy will slow down our growth rate this year. 🇬🇧 limey a derogatory word meaning a British person (n.) | British (adj.) Examples: My grandfather told me about being called a limey when he came to America from England when he was a boy. 🇬🇧 chickens come home to roost If chickens are coming home to roost, someone is suffering the unpleasant consequences of their bad actions in the past. Examples: Fred's in hospital with liver problems. I guess the chickens have come home to roost after all those years of heavy drinking. The chickens are coming home to roost for the executives who committed fraud in the nineties. They're being charged now even though they committed their crimes over ten years ago. 🇬🇧 insist on If you insist on something, you say that you must have it or it must be done. Examples: insist on sth We used to sell on credit, but after not being paid a few times we now insist on payment in advance. insist on doing sth Our youngest son insists on putting tomato sauce on just about everything he eats. 🇬🇧 veggy | veggie a vegetarian Examples: Two of our dinner party guests are veggies, so we'll have to make some non-meat dishes for them. Helen says the latest evidence shows that people who don't eat meat, or eat very little meat, usually live longer and healthier lives, so she's thinking of becoming a veggy. 🇬🇧 Marry in haste, and repent at leisure

🇬🇧 itchy feet If you have itchy feet, you feel the need to go somewhere different or do something different. Examples: It's no wonder Ken's got itchy feet. He's been doing the same job, in the same office, for nearly twenty years. Thanks to low-cost airlines, people with itchy feet who couldn't afford air fares in the past can now travel. 🇬🇧 set up to start a company, a foundation, or an organization of some sort Examples: set up sth A lot of wealthy people set up charities and foundations to help people who are poor or have serious illnesses. set sth up To set a business up, you need an idea and you need money from investors. 🇬🇧 XYZ "code" said to alert someone that their zipper, or fly, is open Examples: "Hey, Bob. XYZ, dude." I noticed that Tony had forgotten to do up his fly, so I said "XYZ, Tony" and winked as I looked down at his fly. Tony looked a bit confused, and then said he wasn't gay. Apparently he didn't know what "XYZ" means. 🇬🇧 A little learning is a dangerous thing

🇬🇧 wash your hands of something If you wash your hands of something that you were involved in, you decide to stop being involved in it after losing your interest or belief in it. Examples: She washed her hands of the whole project after she found out that people had been stealing donated money. Jim washed his hands of politics long ago after realising how corrupt most politicians were. 🇬🇧 go back to return to a place, a person, a condition, etc. Examples: go back I'm feeling much better, thanks. Examples: The singer of The Manic Street Preachers vanished into thin air one day and he's never been seen again. My car keys must be here somewhere.
