The Korovkin Merchants’ mansion in Kalyazin, Russia.
Although the estate was built in the XVIII century, it was constructed in the then quickly gaining popularity classical style - the trendiest architectural fashion of the time.
But nothing lasts forever - and by the end of the XIX century, the house had been renovated in an eclectic style, borrowing heavily from the Baroque - the very style that the owners had considered outdated when the house was originally built.

| 5 | The Minerva Hotel in Craiova, Romania - arguably the most impressive Belle Époque hotel in the city.
Although at its core it is a typical Beaux-Arts building - a fact most evident in the roof - externally it is a lively blend of Moorish and Gothic styles, thus hinting at Neo-Wallachian architecture as well, though the major styles take centre stage here. | 490 |

| 8 | Finally, to conclude this day, let’s take a look at just one photo of the Trinity Cathedral in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is one of the first Serbian cathedrals to have been built following the Ottoman conquest in territories still under Turkish control. Like a number of similar churches, it was built by Andrey Damjanov - a renowned architect from modern Macedonia, who had an enormous influence on South Slavic architecture in general and Serbian architecture in particular.
Mostar Cathedral, like Damjanov’s other projects, combined the Baroque forms of Austria-Hungary - by then familiar to Serbs - with the legacy of medieval architecture and the pan-Christian architecture of the Ottoman Empire. Built in the XIX century, it survived both world wars and communism - but was almost destroyed during the break-up of Yugoslavia.
Today, the cathedral is being restored from its ruins and enhanced with new details - in particular, neo-Byzantine, as evidenced by the capitals of the recently rebuilt pillars. | 569 |
| 9 | Let's continue today's selection with the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Piraeus, Greece.
The church was built to replace one destroyed during World War II and is a quintessential example of the XX century Greek Neo-Byzantine architecture, organically combining Early Byzantine and Middle Byzantine features.
The interior of the church has hardly been photographed in detail, even on the website of the local metropolis - a pity, because it is precisely the interior that impresses with its airy space under the dome and its masterful marble work. Unfortunately, it seems that its relative modernity makes the church invisible to outside observers - and very wrongly so. | 527 |
| 10 | Today the Orthodox Church commemorates the Day of Holy Pentecost, the Day of the Holy Trinity, considered, among other things, the day of the founding of the Church as such.
As usual, in honor of this bright holiday, I have prepared a selection of the most interesting and significant temples dedicated to it, and I propose to start with the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Pskov.
Being the heart of the ancient city, the temple is still quite young - it was built at the end of the XVII century. This does not deprive it of uniqueness, as it is one of the few cathedrals built in the style of Moscow Baroque. The most notable element of the style, mannerist windows, have survived only on the galleries and chapels, but the massive, soaring silhouette is difficult to confuse with anything, and the height is indeed cathedral's distinctive feature. If the previous medieval temple resembled a tower, the current cathedral, built on its foundation, remains the tallest full-fledged building in the Pskov region. | 451 |
| 11 | The Sirotkin House in Nizhny Novgorod - a fine monument of Russian second-wave neo-Classicism, originally intended as a museum - the owner, already during construction, planned to donate it to the city. | 507 |
| 12 | Thanks to the easing of persecutions, the Copts in Egypt have been experiencing a construction boom over the last few decades - so large-scale that they may succeed in creating full-fledged ecclesiastical architecture based on modern architecture with all its downsides.
However, let's not develop this topic yet - most current temples, while using modern architecture, usually represent a reinterpretation of Egyptian and Neo-Byzantine elements with some Western inclusions. At the same time, among the Christians of Egypt, there is a growing fascination with a rather simplified, but clearly Western iconography and architecture.
And if in most cases this fascination, together with the level of execution, gives rise to rather unsuccessful experiments, however, temples similar to the one attached in the photo, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Qena, make one wonder - is this kitsch, or are the loud claims of a new tradition, just as the more typical Neo-Egyptian buildings? | 518 |
| 13 | Fantastic news from Romania! It turns out that the XVII century fortified inn in the village of Șerbești, which I had previously covered, has been restored! The historical stucco decoration is yet to be recreated, but the progress is already immense. | 535 |
| 14 | The Derevyanitsky Monastery in Veliky Novgorod is rightly regarded as one of the most important in the ancient city, but of all its monuments, in my view, one of the most interesting is the refectory Church of the Dormition.
It fits perfectly into the monastery complex - preserving even more of Novgorod’s original features within the common-Russian Uzorochye than other buildings in the monastery, and therefore appearing more ancient. It is surprising, however, that it was built in the XVIII century, albeit in the first half of it, and only the Baroque bell tower reveals the actual date of the church’s construction. | 591 |
| 15 | A Byzantine house at Umm al-Jimal, Jordan. | 490 |
| 16 | Renaissance pentaptych with a beautiful blend of Byzantine and Italian traditions from Crete, currently held in the Yale University Art Gallery. | 559 |
| 17 | An interesting pre-war photo of Yanovskaya's house on Georgievskaya Street in Kaluga, Russia - an old hipped roof is visible, which was lost either during the war or during the subsequent restoration of the house. It may have been preserved since the XVIII century - the time of the building's construction. | 443 |
| 18 | A Byzantine bronze mirror, crafted in the same manner as ancient counterparts, but featuring a depiction of a saint instead of pagan gods. | 450 |
| 19 | Unicorns from the Yusupov Chambers in Moscow, the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Dedinovo, the Historical Museum in Moscow, the Church of the Prophet Elijah in Yaroslavl, and even a XVII chest-headrest from the Dvina region. | 505 |
