Architecture of the Byzantine world

Today in Serbia Vidovdan - the day of Saint Vitus, on which the most important events of Serbian history took place, including the Battle of Kosovo, is celebrated. And the Gazimestan Memorial serves as an eternal reminder of the self-sacrifice of the Serbian nation led by Prince Lazar.

Saint George Church in Baltiski (rus. Baltisky Port), Estonia, looks more like an Austro-Hungarian church, and not necessarily an Orthodox one, but in fact is a Russian church whose history began as a temporary military one in the times of Peter the Great. Before the revolution, the church had a more ornate and typical appearance (largely due to the neo-Russian bell tower), but fell into disrepair during the XX century.

Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Chicago, IL. Founded in 1997, it is a parish of the OCA Diocese of Chicago and the Midwest, and one of three parishes belonging to the diocese in the city proper. The church was purchased from a collapsing Anglican denomination, and the parish boasts a unique blend of Anglican and Orthodox aesthetics. The parish was open for just over a year before needing to close temporarily for renovations. Fr. John Baker came in 2004 and his work over the next 17 years helped build up the parish and place it on solid footing for the future. Thanks in no small part to his work the temple was able to be consecrated by Abp. Job in 2008, and the faithful there look to a bright future.

If the Heraklion Loggia is a rather large-scale building that looked good in Venice itself, in nearby Rethymnon it is a more modest but no less interesting Renaissance building from the Venetian period.

Two-towered churches are atypical for Russian traditions, and started to appear in it only under the Western influence, so it isn't surprising that with gradual appeal to Russian and Byzantine motifs in the architecture, the popularity of such temples started to decline. And more so interesting, that not a neocassical or neo-Baroque, but a Neo-Russian church of the Cherkassoye village is utilizing this design.
