| 4 | Something to ponder over:
Perhaps the reason you have found little success in your own pursuit of knowledge is because you harbour envy towards those whom Allāh has granted success in seeking it.
How can you expect Allāh to pour the light of knowledge into your heart while you are displeased with the places and people upon whom He has already chosen to bestow this blessed knowledge?
Be pleased with what Allāh has chosen, and ask Him to grant you a share of the same bounty.

| 5 | 📚 Envy: Its Types, Its Harms, Its Signs, Its Treatment

Envy Is a Major Sin
Shaykh al-Islām Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Najdī (رحمه الله) included a chapter on envy in his book Kitāb al-Kabāʾir (p. 70).
He then mentioned the saying of Allāh, the Exalted:
{أَمْ يَحْسُدُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ عَلَىٰ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ}
{Or do they envy people for what Allāh has given them of His bounty?}
[al-Nisāʾ, 4:54]
And from Anas (رضي الله عنه), that the Prophet ﷺ said:
«لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ.»
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”
[Agreed upon]
He also cited the report from Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):
«إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ، فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ.»
“Beware of envy, for envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes firewood.”
[Sunan Abī Dawūd]
The author immediately notes that this ḥadīth is weak and quotes Imām al-Albānī’s grading and discussion of its chains.
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (حفظه الله) said:
“This chapter explains one of the major sins, namely envy. Envy is wishing for the blessing of the envied person to disappear, whether one merely wishes for it to disappear from him or wishes that it be taken from him and given to the envier. It is a major sin because it is an objection to Allāh, Glorified and Exalted is He, regarding what He decrees and ordains.”

The Virtues of Knowledge [Narration #1]
Shaykh al-Islām—may Allāh have mercy on him—said regarding the ḥadīth:
«مَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ»
"Whomever Allāh intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion."
The necessary implication of this is that whoever Allāh does not grant understanding in the religion, He did not intend good for him. Thus, gaining understanding in the religion is an obligation. And understanding in the religion means knowing the legal rulings through their revealed evidences. So whoever does not know that, is not one who understands.

At the time of their arrival in Ṣanʿāʾ, the Ḥouthīs had not yet taken control of the capital. They were based in Ṣaʿdah, while Ṣanʿāʾ remained under the control of the Sunni Yemeni government.
This situation later changed when the Ḥouthīs advanced into Ṣanʿāʾ, eventually overthrowing the government and taking control of the capital. As they spread throughout the city, they once again pursued and oppressed the students of knowledge, arresting many of them. The persecution eventually became much, and so the vast majority of the students left Ṣanʿāʾ, whilst only some remained.
Shaykh Yaḥyā al-Ḥajūrī then travelled to Saudi Arabia, where he remained for several years, continuing his teaching and daʿwah wherever he was permitted to do so. Meanwhile, the other Mashāyikh and students dispersed throughout Yemen, establishing new marākiz and masājid from which they could continue teaching the dīn of Allāh.
What appeared to be a great setback ultimately became a great blessing in disguise. Today, the masājid and marākiz of Ahl al-Sunnah are numerous—perhaps around 100—and all praise and thanks belong to Allāh.
The Rāfiḍah sought to destroy the daʿwah, but Allāh caused their efforts to become a means of its expansion, increasing it in goodness and recognition.
It is just as Allāh said:
{يُرِيدُونَ لِيُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَٱللَّهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ}
“They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.”
[al-Ṣaff (61:8)]

Following the evacuation of Dār al-Ḥadīth in Dammāj in Rabīʿ al-Awwal 1435 AH, at the request of the Yemeni government, Shaykh Yaḥyā and thousands of his students travelled to Ṣanʿāʾ. They were received by Ahl al-Sunnah and distributed among several masājid.
The primary masjid where Shaykh Yaḥyā and his students established themselves was Masjid al-Fatḥ, under the supervision of Shaykh Muḥammad al-Qaysī.

| 11 |  Dammāj, Ṣaʿdah (1) | Dār al-Ḥadīth al-Salafiyyah
Before Maʾrib, Ṣanʿāʾ, Makkah and Seiyʾūn, Shaykh Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥajūrī spent many years teaching at Dār al-Ḥadīth al-Salafiyyah in Dammāj, Ṣaʿdah, which was established by Imām Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī, may Allāh have mercy upon him.
After the death of Imām Muqbil in 1422 AH, Shaykh Yaḥyā succeeded him as head of the Dār by his instruction. Imām Muqbil considered Shaykh Yaḥyā to be among the most knowledgeable of his students, as he himself testified.
The markaz in Dammāj attracted students of knowledge from Yemen and around the world. It became one of the most prominent centres of Salafiyyah, with thousands of students attending the Shaykh’s lessons.
In early 1433 AH, the Ḥouthīs imposed their first siege on Dammāj, which lasted approximately 70 days. Around 70 students were killed during this siege. The Ḥouthīs eventually lifted the siege, after which a period of peace continued for approximately a year and a half.
Then, in 1434 AH, the vile Ḥouthīs launched their second and even more oppressive siege of Dammāj, again surrounding the village and preventing food, medicine and other necessities from reaching its inhabitants. The siege lasted approximately 100 days, during which the students and families of Dammāj were subjected to relentless bombings, hardship and killing. This time, however, the students were better prepared and defended themselves very well, fighting hard in the mountains surrounding the village of Dammāj preventing the Ḥouthīs from advancing. In the end, the Ḥouthīs during this siege killed about 250 students, may Allāh have mercy upon them all.
Eventually, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal 1435 AH, after the siege was lifted, the students and inhabitants were evacuated from Dammāj at the request of the Yemeni government. They did not voluntarily abandon Dammāj, nor did they surrender to the Ḥouthīs. Rather, they had striven to defend themselves in the path of Allāh, enduring the siege despite being heavily outnumbered, outgunned, and possessing little to no support compared to what was available to the Ḥouthīs.
And despite all this, in the end, they killed more of the Ḥouthīs than were killed from among them, as was narrated to me by one of the senior students who fought there, ultimately leaving the Ḥouthīs disgraced and without victory. They therefore left Dammāj in response to the government’s request for their evacuation, not due to “defeat”.
Shaykh Yaḥyā and approximately ten thousand students travelled to Ṣanʿāʾ, where they were received by Ahl al-Sunnah and distributed among several masājid.

| 15 |  Imām Muqbil’s Praise for Shaykh Yaḥyā al-Ḥajūrī and Shaykh Salīm al-Hilālī
Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
«وأحسن ما ينفعكم بإذن الله تعالى هو استقدام العلماء المبرزين مثل أخينا في الله (سليم الهلالي) … ومثل الشيخ الفاضل الذي ينوب عني في التدريس إذا مرضت أو إذا غبت أو كثرت علي الدروس الشيخ (يحيى بن علي الحجوري) حفظه الله تعالى.»
“And among the best things that will benefit you, by the permission of Allāh, the Most High, is bringing distinguished scholars, such as our brother in Allāh, Salīm al-Hilālī… and likewise the virtuous Shaykh who deputises for me in teaching whenever I fall ill, or when I am absent, or when my lessons become numerous: Shaykh Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥajūrī—may Allāh, the Most High, preserve him.”
