1. Report by the OECD based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2. Core Finding: Students who regularly use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for schoolwork underperform academically compared to those who rarely or never use them. 3. Bypassing the "Productive Cognitive Struggle": Learning requires mental friction and engagement with new material. Over-relying on generative AI short-circuits this cognitive struggle, leading to passive content consumption rather than deep understanding. 4. "Scaffold vs. Crutch" Principle: As noted by OECD Director Andreas Schleicher: Scaffold (Constructive): Technology should aid, structure, or enhance the thinking process. Crutch (Detrimental): Using AI to generate answers or bypass baseline problem-solving impairs foundational cognitive and analytical development.

🔆 ONE LINERS – 12 SEPTEMBER 2026 📍 HISTORY, ART & CULTURE 🔆 Brick Structure Found in Kollidam Riverbed 🟢 A possible Sangam-period water-management structure, around 2,000 years old, was found on the Kollidam riverbed at Koogur near Lalgudi, Tiruchi district, Tamil Nadu. 🟢 The site is close to the ancient Kallanai dam, traditionally attributed to Karikala Chola. 🟢 Structure contains large rectangular and wedge-shaped bricks along with stone structural elements. 🟢 Likely function: sluice, inlet/outlet channel or canal-regulating structure for water management. 🟢 Its design is comparable to an ancient water-management structure at Vanagiri near Kaveripoompattinam (Poompuhar). 🟢 Kurampu refers to a water-management structure comparable to a check dam, mentioned in literary and inscriptional sources. 🟢 Kollidam River: Northern and larger distributary of the Kaveri, splitting near Srirangam and flowing into the Bay of Bengal near Pazhaiyar. 🔆 Thirukkural – Gift to Russian President 🟢 Ahead of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the Indian Prime Minister gifted the Russian President a Russian-translated edition of Thirukkural. 🟢 Written by Thiruvalluvar, the classical Tamil text contains 1,330 couplets arranged in 133 chapters. 🟢 Each couplet (Kural) consists of seven words. 🟢 Three themes: Aram (Virtue) – 38 chapters; Porul (Polity) – 70; Inbam (Love) – 25. 🟢 First published in English in 1840 and subsequently translated into 60+ languages. 🟢 The Russian translation was done by Naira Mkrtchyan and published in 2026 by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. 📍 GEOGRAPHY 🔆 Bakhira Lake – Palaeoclimate Archive 🟢 Bakhira Lake, located in Sant Kabir Nagar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, is the largest natural floodplain wetland in the state. 🟢 It forms part of the Ghaghara–Rapti alluvial system and is a perennial oxbow/floodplain wetland formed by migration and cut-off of the Rapti River. 🟢 Designated a Ramsar Site in 2022. 🟢 Sediment records extend back around 25,000 years, providing a long-term palaeoclimate archive. 🟢 Findings can support agricultural planning, flood/drought mitigation, water-resource management and wetland conservation in the Central Ganga Plain. 🟢 Important habitat for migratory and resident waterbirds. 📍 POLITY & GOVERNANCE 🔆 Recognition of Political Parties – TVK 🟢 The Election Commission of India (ECI) recognised TVK as a State Party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. 🟢 ECI registers and recognises political parties under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, based on electoral performance. 🟢 State Party: A registered party can qualify through any one of five criteria, including 6% votes + 2 Assembly seats, 3%/3 Assembly seats, 1 Lok Sabha seat + 6% votes, 1/25th Lok Sabha seats, or 8% valid votes. 🟢 National Party: Recognition requires satisfaction of any one of three prescribed criteria. 🟢 Recognised parties enjoy reserved symbols, up to 40 star campaigners, free broadcast time on state media and other electoral facilities. 🟢 Recognition is important for a party’s electoral identity and campaign privileges. 🔆 National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) 🟢 Bhagwat Prasad Makwana assumed charge as Chairperson of the NCSK. 🟢 Constituted on 12 August 1994 as a statutory body under the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993. 🟢 After the Act lapsed in 2004, NCSK became a temporary non-statutory body, with its tenure periodically extended; currently extended up to 31 March 2028. 🟢 Mandate: Safeguard the rights, interests and welfare of Safai Karamcharis and monitor implementation of relevant laws and schemes. 🟢 Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. 🟢 Composition: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, 5 members including at least one woman member, and a Secretary. 📍 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS & ISSUES 🔆 International Space Summit 2026 – India–France Cooperation 🟢 India and France signed/announced three agreements at the International Space Summit in Paris. 🟢 Space Surveillance:Safran Space–Dhruva Space contracts worth €5 million+ for technologies supporting India’s planned 52-satellite space-surveillance constellation (2027–30). 🟢 Satellite Launches: French launch-services provider RIDE! and India’s TakeMeToSpace agreed to launch two satellites, including an atmospheric re-entry capsule aboard PSLV. 🟢 Microsatellites:U-Space–AXISCADES commercial cooperation to explore India’s growing microsatellite market. 🟢 Significance: Deepens India–France strategic cooperation in space technology, surveillance and commercial launch services. 📍 ENVIRONMENT 🔆 National Forest Martyrs Day 2026 🟢 Observed annually on 11 September to honour forest guards, rangers and community members who lost their lives protecting forests, wildlife and biodiversity. 🟢 2026 Theme:“Guardians of the Green: Honouring Sacrifice, Sustaining Biodiversity.” 🟢 The date commemorates the Khejarli Sacrifice of 1730 in Rajasthan. 🟢 Led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi, more than 360 Bishnoi community members sacrificed their lives while protecting sacred Khejri trees. 🟢 The sacrifice is regarded as an inspiration for later environmental movements such as the Chipko Movement. 🟢 Focus: Recognising frontline conservation personnel and strengthening public responsibility for forest and wildlife protection. 📍 SECURITY 🔆 Lipulekh Pass – India–Tibet Trade Route Reopens 🟢 The India–Tibet trade route through Lipulekh Pass has reopened, with a 17-member Indian delegation entering Taklakot, Tibet. 🟢 Located at 17,000+ feet in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, connecting the Kumaon region with Tibet near the India–Nepal–China trijunction. 🟢 The route was closed after the 1962 India–China war; trade resumed in 1992 but was suspended again in 2019. 🟢 India–Nepal territorial issue: Nepal claims the Kalapani region near the pass; India rejects the claim. 🟢 Indian traders export spices, tea, jaggery, sugar candy, cosmetics and household goods and import wool, pashmina, yak hair, garments and footwear. 🟢 Reopening is expected to revive cross-border trade and livelihoods in Dharchula and surrounding border villages. 📍 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 🔆 OneTag – FASTag Portability 🟢 Union Minister launched OneTag at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, Mumbai. 🟢 Allows users to change their FASTag issuer bank while retaining the existing physical tag. 🟢 Joint initiative of IHMCL and NPCI, promoted by NHAI and NPCI. 🟢 Service will be available through the Rajmargyatra app. 🟢 India has 98%+ FASTag penetration, with around 13 crore NETC FASTags issued and approximately 6 crore active tags. 🟢 Long-term goal: barrier-free tolling, using AI and automatic number-plate recognition for zero stoppage and zero waiting time. 🔆 7th Global Fintech Fest 2026 🟢 The Global Fintech Fest (GFF 2026) is being held in Mumbai as a four-day global fintech gathering. 🟢 Organised by Payments Council of India (PCI), NPCI and Fintech Convergence Council (FCC). 🟢 Theme:“Potential to Impact: Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.” 📍 MISCELLANEOUS 🔆 Digvijay Diwas 2026 🟢 Observed annually on 11 September to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s historic address at the World’s Parliament of Religions, Chicago, on 11 September 1893. 🟢 He began with “Sisters and Brothers of America”, receiving an enthusiastic response. 🟢 Presented India’s philosophical traditions, particularly Vedanta, on the global stage. 🟢 Emphasised religious tolerance, universal acceptance, interfaith harmony and universal brotherhood. 🟢 Digvijay means “proclamation of victory” and symbolises India’s victory in the realm of ideas and spiritual thought. #CurrentAffairs

Arguments Favouring a Ban (The Case for Restriction)
Cognitive Offloading: Gen AI provides ready-made answers, short-circuiting the "liminal space" of struggle that is essential for building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As Jaswani notes, it can "kill a love for learning" by removing the trial-and-error process. Accuracy and Hallucination: AI tools often make errors, such as marking correct Indian-accented English as wrong. Without teacher oversight, students may internalize incorrect information. Developmental Impact: Excessive reliance on AI during primary education may hinder the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, besides reducing human interaction essential for social-emotional learning.

Arguments Against a Blanket Ban (The Case for Integration) Digital Fluency: Children are already "tech-savvy" and use AI indirectly via search engines and games. A ban is impractical; instead, guided usage can build responsible digital citizenship. Teacher Support: AI can act as a "teaching assistant," helping teachers generate rubrics, create visual aids, and design differentiated instruction, especially in resource-scarce rural schools. Accessibility: For students with learning disabilities, AI can provide text-to-speech and translation support, democratizing access to quality education
