🔆 ONE LINERS – 12 SEPTEMBER 2026
📍 HISTORY, ART & CULTURE
🔆 Brick Structure Found in Kollidam Riverbed
🟢 A possible Sangam-period water-management structure, around 2,000 years old, was found on the Kollidam riverbed at Koogur near Lalgudi, Tiruchi district, Tamil Nadu.
🟢 The site is close to the ancient Kallanai dam, traditionally attributed to Karikala Chola.
🟢 Structure contains large rectangular and wedge-shaped bricks along with stone structural elements.
🟢 Likely function: sluice, inlet/outlet channel or canal-regulating structure for water management.
🟢 Its design is comparable to an ancient water-management structure at Vanagiri near Kaveripoompattinam (Poompuhar).
🟢 Kurampu refers to a water-management structure comparable to a check dam, mentioned in literary and inscriptional sources.
🟢 Kollidam River: Northern and larger distributary of the Kaveri, splitting near Srirangam and flowing into the Bay of Bengal near Pazhaiyar.
🔆 Thirukkural – Gift to Russian President
🟢 Ahead of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the Indian Prime Minister gifted the Russian President a Russian-translated edition of Thirukkural.

🟢 Each couplet (Kural) consists of seven words.
🟢 Three themes: Aram (Virtue) – 38 chapters; Porul (Polity) – 70; Inbam (Love) – 25.
🟢 First published in English in 1840 and subsequently translated into 60+ languages.
🟢 The Russian translation was done by Naira Mkrtchyan and published in 2026 by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil.

🟢 Designated a Ramsar Site in 2022.
🟢 Sediment records extend back around 25,000 years, providing a long-term palaeoclimate archive.
🟢 Findings can support agricultural planning, flood/drought mitigation, water-resource management and wetland conservation in the Central Ganga Plain.

Arguments Favouring a Ban (The Case for Restriction)Cognitive Offloading: Gen AI provides ready-made answers, short-circuiting the "liminal space" of struggle that is essential for building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As Jaswani notes, it can "kill a love for learning" by removing the trial-and-error process. Accuracy and Hallucination: AI tools often make errors, such as marking correct Indian-accented English as wrong. Without teacher oversight, students may internalize incorrect information. Developmental Impact: Excessive reliance on AI during primary education may hinder the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, besides reducing human interaction essential for social-emotional learning.
Arguments Against a Blanket Ban
(The Case for Integration)
Digital Fluency: Children are already "tech-savvy" and use AI indirectly via search engines and games. A ban is impractical; instead, guided usage can build responsible digital citizenship.
Teacher Support: AI can act as a "teaching assistant," helping teachers generate rubrics, create visual aids, and design differentiated instruction, especially in resource-scarce rural schools.
Accessibility: For students with learning disabilities, AI can provide text-to-speech and translation support, democratizing access to quality education
Way Forward
Age-Appropriate Guardrails: Implement strict restrictions for primary students (e.g., Class 8 and below, as per NYC's moratorium) while allowing supervised use for senior students.
Teacher Training: Invest in continuous professional development to help educators integrate AI as a "prep time" tool and teach students to fact-check AI outputs.
Human-Centric Pedagogy: Preserve the teacher's role as a mentor who fosters empathy, ethics, and complex reasoning—qualities AI cannot replicate.
Conclusion
Gen AI should not be banned but carefully regulated in schools. The focus must shift from prohibition to digital literacy, ensuring that young minds first develop the cognitive muscles of independent thinking before wielding the powerful, yet fallible, tool of artificial intelligence.

“The Satya Niketan incident exposes the critical gaps in urban governance, particularly in regulatory enforcement, risk-sensitive urban planning and preventive administration. It reinforces the paradigm shift from a reactive, relief-centric model to a proactive, resilience-oriented approach—where stringent building-code compliance, risk anticipation, vulnerability reduction and disaster-risk mitigation precede, rather than follow, the occurrence of disasters.”

Cognitive Manipulation
Generative AI is becoming a new instrument of political communication, raising concerns regarding misinformation, voter manipulation and the integrity of electoral discourse.
dual-use nature of Generative AI—the same technology that enables creative expression can also facilitate synthetic political narratives.
In the age of Generative AI, democracy faces a new paradox: technology has made political expression easier to create, but truth harder to authenticate.”
