🎄 Tired Teachers & Business People, Rejoice! Is it just me, or is everyone running on fumes, holiday hype, and the last dregs of office coffee? The end-of-year slump is REAL 🙈 Fear not! I’ve been brewing some fresh, actually-engaging ideas to wake up our lesson plans (and ourselves). I shared my 4 sparks over on the Trendy channel earlier (forwarded below 👇 for your convenience). BUT! The main course is here. This week, I’m sharing FOUR complete, ready-to-use lesson plans based on those ideas. For tired teachers of tired adults. Because we’re in this together! ❤️ Stay tuned, stay caffeinated, and let’s end the year on a high note! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ #teachers #english #ProfessionalDevelopment #английский #TeacherTraining #Education #Psychology

📢 How Understanding Stress Transforms Language Learning On November 22 I had the honour of giving a master class at the University where I am currently completing my Master’s degree. The topic was close to my heart and critical for every professional and learner: The Dialectics of Stress in Foreign Language Learning 🌟 We often think of stress as the enemy of learning—the feeling that blocks memory, stifles speaking, and hampers progress. But what if we could understand it, measure it, and even harness it? In the session, I explored: ✅ Why stress is not just “bad”—it’s essential for growth. ✅ What teachers MUST know to create optimal learning conditions. ✅ What learners should understand about their own psychological edge. The discussion was grounded in powerful frameworks: Hans Selye’s theory of stress (eustress vs. distress) • Lev Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development • The Yerkes–Dodson law on performance and arousal Together, these help answer two key questions: 🔹 HOW does learning actually work? 🔹 HOW can a teacher curate an environment for peak performance and results? If you’re in business, education, or simply passionate about effective skill acquisition—this isn’t just theory. It’s about creating results, in the classroom, online, or in corporate training. 💡 I’ll share the presentation in the comments—feel free to dive in, use it, and discuss. The presentation is in RUSSIAN Have you experienced “productive stress” in learning? How do you balance challenge and support in your teams or your own learning journey? Let’s talk in the comments. #teachers #learners #Psychology #BusinessEnglish #LanguageLearning #StressManagement #TeacherTraining #ProfessionalDevelopment #английский #Vygotsky #MasterClass #LifelongLearning #Education #english

☀️Hello everyone!☀️ You might not see or hear much from me this week, and for good reason: my backside is quite literally on fire 🔥 as it's exam session time for my Master's degree. I'm currently mainlining coffee and trying to remember if "strategic operational efficacy" is a real concept or just three words I put together in a panic 😳 But even in the storm, I wanted to share a little Book Recommendation that is too good not to pass on. ⚠️ The book is "The Design of Everyday Things" by Don Norman that I will share in the comments. Don Norman is a cognitive scientist and a usability guru who brilliantly explores why some products are a joy to use and others make you want to throw them out a window. Why is this a must-read for Business English pros? For teachers, it’s a masterclass in designing lessons and materials that are intuitive and student-centered. For students working in any business field—from marketing to management—it will change how you think about creating presentations, processes, and products for your clients and colleagues. My favourite quote that hits the nail on the head:
"Why are people having problems?" they wonder. "You are being too logical," I say. "You are designing for people the way you would like them to be, not for the way they really are."
Let's all design for how people really are, not just how we wish they'd be!😌 Wish me luck on my exams! Now, back to my regularly scheduled programming of mild panic and flashcards in Quizlet 🫠 #teachers #learners #Psychology #BusinessEnglish #english #ProfessionalDevelopment

Hello everyone,🐤 Yesterday was a classic busy day: back-to-back classes followed by an evening of table tennis training. But squeezed right in the middle, I made time to visit the PSYCOACH EXPO 😎, an exhibition on psychology and coaching. A quick note: It's still on today, and it's the final day! If you're in the city, I highly recommend checking it out. https://psycoach-expo.ru/ You might think, "I'm not a psychologist or a coach, is this for me?" The answer is a definitive YES. The Expo has valuable insights for business people, educators, and anyone looking for guidance in various life spheres—from career and finance to personal relationships. And you can visit it for free! As someone constantly looking for cross-industry lessons, here was my key takeaway. My 6 Key Takeaways from PSYCOACH EXPO: Strategic Networking: Entering a new field means you need to know the key players. This was a prime opportunity for genuine networking and connecting with the right PEOPLE. ✅ Benchmarking Communication: I attended several talks to observe presentation styles at such conferences. It was a perfect chance to analyze delivery, structure my thoughts on how I could contribute, and consider what we can learn and take there from the ELT world. ✅ Spotting Industry Trends: For instance, a clear shift is happening from traditional business training to interactive training games. The reason? They are more engaging for participants and often more cost-effective for companies. ✅ Niche & Business Development: I paid close attention to how established professionals find their clients and market their services. It provided concrete ideas for a potential niche I could explore after completing my Master's degree. ✅ Practical Resources: I, of course, invested in some new books. (Look at this book! I think the cover design was destined for me—it perfectly matches this channel's aesthetic!). ✅ Atmosphere & Mindset: Sometimes, the biggest benefit is simply immersing yourself in a new, stimulating environment. It was a great way to recharge and gain a fresh perspective. The Business English Angle? 🧐 Stepping outside your immediate industry is a powerful way to spark innovation. The communication strategies, networking tactics, and trends I observed are directly applicable to how we operate and communicate in the business world. Sometimes, the best ideas for your career come from the most unexpected places. Have a nice weekend! #BusinessEnglish #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking #LifelongLearning #Coaching #Psychology #CareerGrowth #Innovation #learners #teachers

Beyond Paper: Is Your Business Card Memorable in 2025? 🧐 Let's be honest. In a world of digital overload, the classic business card often ends up in a drawer (or worse, the bin). But in an era where networking is a superpower, the game has changed. The goal is no longer just to give your card—it's to make people keep it, share it, and remember you. The biggest challenge today is creating a card so unique that it becomes a conversation starter, not just a data transfer tool. So, how do you break the mold? Let's explore some creative types of business cards: 1. The "Experience" Card: Lottery Ticket & Scratch Card * What it is: A business card that looks like a lottery ticket or has a scratch-off area. * Pros: Creates instant engagement and a fun, memorable moment. The reveal can be a discount code, a secret link, or a special offer. * Cons: Can be perceived as gimmicky if not done well. The "prize" must be genuinely valuable. 2. The "Useful" Card: Bookmark & Tool * What it is: A card that doubles as a bookmark, a ruler, a smartphone stand, or even a seed packet. * Pros: High practical value ensures it's kept and used regularly. It aligns your brand with utility and thoughtfulness. * Cons: Limited space for information. The functionality must be well-made to avoid feeling cheap. 3. The "Conceptual" Card: Metaphorical Design * What it is: A card whose shape, material, or design is a direct metaphor for your work (e.g., a card made of wood for a forestry company, a circuit-board design for an IT specialist). * Pros: Instantly communicates your brand's essence and showcases creativity. Highly memorable for its intellectual appeal. * Cons: Can be expensive to produce. The metaphor must be instantly understandable. 4. The "Digital Native" Card: NFC & QR Codes * What it is: A card with an embedded NFC chip or a prominent QR code. A simple tap or scan saves your contact directly to a phone or leads to your portfolio/website. * Pros: Seamlessly bridges the physical and digital worlds. It's efficient, modern, and provides rich data (like how many people scanned it). * Cons: Requires the recipient to have a compatible device and the know-how to use it. The "magic" is invisible until activated. I've been thinking about this a lot myself: What can I do to make people keep and share my card? And here's my answer: Stickers with QR Codes❗️❗️❗️ I've noticed that people love putting stickers everywhere: on laptops, water bottles, notebooks, and phone cases. They are a form of self-expression. By turning my contact information into a cool, well-designed sticker with a QR code, I'm not giving people a piece of paper—I'm giving them a piece of their own style. They choose to display it, making my brand a part of their daily life. Many savvy brands already use this tactic to build recognition. By the way, my stickers were designed by @ZubakinaA ❤️ 💡 So, what do you think? * Did you like any of these ideas? * What kind of business card do you use? Feel free to share a photo/video of your business card in the comments - let's get some inspiration flowing! 💼✨ #BusinessEnglish #Networking #BusinessCards #PersonalBranding #Marketing #CareerTips #english #teachers #learners #MarketingReflection #business

In today’s stream Svetlana Merinova—an English teacher and entrepreneur with a diverse career path from technical translator and corporate marketer to educator—shares her insights on self-discovery, the growing importance of soft skills in the age of AI, and the profound personal lessons she draws from mountaineering. She speaks about finding her true calling, combining language teaching with coaching and psychology, and how climbing mountains teaches her patience, mindfulness, and deliberate decision-making, all of which she applies to her work with students. 🌟🌟HIGHLIGHTS🌟🌟 🧗‍♀️ Mountaineering as a Metaphor for Life and Teaching. Svetlana describes how the mountains teach her patience, delayed triumph, making calculated decisions, and the importance of knowing when to take a step back. She compares an ice axe to a tool for stabilization, not attack—just as in communication, arguments should "anchor" you rather than "strike" others (I loooove this idea soooo so much!!! ❤️❤️❤️). 🧭 The Search for Meaning and a Career Change. Her decision to leave a 10-year corporate marketing career and return to teaching was deliberate, driven by a search for personal significance and a desire to leave a legacy, rather than chasing money or status. 🧠 Blending Language Training with Psychology. Svetlana emphasizes that modern teachers must understand psychology and interpersonal communication to build deep human connections and understand how the brain learns. 💡 Soft Skills as a Key Advantage Over AI. Drawing on marketing reports, she argues that as artificial intelligence advances, communication, leadership, and teamwork (soft skills) are becoming the most crucial skills for the future. 🎯 The Importance of a Niche and Authenticity. To stand out, especially in teaching, you need to add something unique to your work—your own personal "spin" or "unique selling point"—which attracts clients and students who share your values. 👥 Working with Diverse Age Groups.Svetlana enthusiastically works with both teenagers, helping them discover themselves, and adults 50+, whom she admires for their activity, freedom, and desire to learn new things. 🏔 Climbing for a "Reset" and the Feeling of Being Alive. For her, mountains are a way to decompress from mentally demanding work, "slow down," feel her body, and experience genuine, unfakeable emotions that, in turn, inspire others. ⚠️ Understanding Risk and the Value of Life. Mountaineering has taught her not to take reckless risks: "The mountain will be there for thousands of years, but your life is unique." It's a lesson in personal responsibility. 🐢 Advice for Beginners: Start with Small Steps. You can't go from zero to running 8 km. You must start small and gradually build up, whether in physical training or changing careers. The key is not to rush. If you want to know more, watch the whole video) You can use this as a podcast to improve your listening skills AND/OR gain some valuable insights and recommendations! As promised, here are my key recommendations for transforming your approach and becoming a true Business English consultant who commands respect and delivers real value. ✅1. Ask, Listen, and Build Your "Living" Knowledge Base. This is your most powerful tool. Use tasks, small talk, and warmers to ask students about: *Their specific role, projects, and daily challenges. *The company's structure, culture, and management style. *Industry pros/cons, operational efficiencies, and current problems. *Their past experiences in other companies (failures and successes). This collected real-life experience becomes your priceless, practical knowledge base, far beyond any textbook.2. Don't Trust Textbooks Blindly. While Business English textbooks are created by skilled methodologists, these authors often lack hands-on business experience. The theories can be obsolete (as it takes a long time to create and publish a book), and case studies can seem naïve or ridiculous to a seasoned specialist. Use the book as a scaffold, but always be ready to critique it with real-world insights from your students. ✅3. Stay Current with the Business World. Make it a habit to follow: *Global Economic News: (Bloomberg, The Economist, FT etc.). *Your Students' Industries: If you teach people from pharma, tech, or finance, know the key players, mergers/acquisitions, and trends in that sector. This keeps your context relevant, makes you sound professional, and helps you understand your students' reality, boosting your confidence and fighting imposter syndrome. ✅4. Commit to Continuous Learning. Your students are learning from you—so who are you learning from? * Read recent business bestsellers (ask your students for recommendations!). * Watch TED Talks and interviews with top executives. * Listen to specialized podcasts on marketing, sales, management, leadership etc. This enriches not only your knowledge but also your lessons, making them authentic, engaging, and uniquely professional. ✅ 5. Study Andragogy and Psychology. This is a critical addition. *Andragogy (the method and practice of teaching adult learners) helps you understand how adults learn best—focusing on practical, goal-oriented, and self-directed learning. * Psychology helps you understand your students better to build rapport, motivate them effectively, and manage group dynamics. Crucially, it also helps you understand yourself, preventing burnout and building the resilience needed for this demanding role. By integrating these strategies, you stop being just a language corrector and start being a strategic partner in your students' professional development. Good luck on your way! 😌 Ask your questions and share your ideas in the comments!🌟 #businessenglish #english #CareerGrowth #LearnEnglish #teachers #SelfDevelopment #Career

The Business English Myth: It's Not Just "Market Leader" and Vocab As a Business English teacher, you've probably heard this
The Business English Myth: It's Not Just "Market Leader" and Vocab As a Business English teacher, you've probably heard this (or even thought it yourself): "Teaching adults is easy. They're motivated, they know what they want, no need for games—just open some “Market Leader”, work on some vocab, and you're golden!" ⚠️Wrong ⚠️ On the one hand, you don't have to be a professional economist or a CEO to teach Business English effectively. But the biggest challenge for most corporate teachers isn't the grammar; it's building rapport. And I'm not just talking about being buddy-buddy with your students. I mean being listened to and heard. It's about having your opinion, your position, and your expertise as a specialist respected. The higher your students' positions (think top managers, VPs, founders), the more challenging this becomes. My own survey from a couple of years ago revealed a key insight: high-level students value nothing more than a teacher who truly understands their work specifics, can support an in-depth discussion, and even offer valuable recommendations (e.g., for a first-time manager). Simply teaching "hard skills" is no longer enough. For instance, if you prepare people for job interviews, you can't just teach them some useful phrases and grammar. High-quality preparation requires a clear understanding of the interview process, current strategies, and specific dos and don'ts for different roles (preparing a programmer and a CFO are worlds apart!). This ability to bridge the gap between language and real-world business acumen is what distinguishes an ordinary "tutor/репетитор” from a true teacher-consultant. So, the million-dollar question is: ❓How do we do this if we're not professional HRs, managers, programmers etc.? ❓Do you agree with this? ❓Do you feel confident in your Business English teacher role? ❓How do you improve your business and teaching expertise? Tomorrow, I'll share my practical guidelines on how to develop from a language tutor into a sought-after Business English consultant. And now I’d like to see what you have in mind. #businessenglish #english #teachers #SelfDevelopment #Career

🌚 I have recently been sent this brilliant (and painfully accurate) meme by one of my friends. On one side, we have the simple, humble reality: "Help deliver toys once a year." On the other, the inevitable LinkedIn-fied version: "Global Chief of Holiday Logistics & Resilience | Emergency Management | Supply Chain Optimization..." It's hilarious because it's true. We've all fallen into this trap, haven't we? We take a perfectly normal task or role and inflate it with corporate buzzwords until it sounds like we're single-handedly saving the world 🙈🙈🙈, one "synergized paradigm shift" at a time. * "I organized files" becomes "Orchestrated a holistic data migration and archival paradigm." * "I answered customer emails" becomes "Spearheaded proactive B2C engagement and relationship management." 🤦🏻‍♀️ Both sides of the hiring process are tired of this. Applicants spend hours twisting their experience into this unrecognizable jargon-salad, and HRs have to decode it, trying to find a real person with real skills behind the "leveraged agile frameworks." 🧐 Everyone thinks it's a bit stupid. But here's the million-dollar question👉: What's the alternative? If we don't present our basic tasks as valuable contributions and frame our experience using these "keywords," how will a recruiter, who spends mere seconds on a profile, understand our strengths? How do we stand out in a sea of other applicants? Most professional career coaches, both internationally and here in Russia, strongly recommend LinkedIn as an essential, irreplaceable tool for a modern job search. It's not just about having a profile; it's about a professional network, engaging content, and, yes, presenting your experience in a way that the algorithm (and recruiters) can find and appreciate. So, we're stuck in this ridiculous dance, polishing our profiles until they shine with professional grandeur, all while secretly wishing we could just say, "I'm good at my job, hire me." ❗️Let's discuss! * What's your take on this LinkedIn "inflation"? * Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Do you find it genuinely helpful, or is it just a necessary evil? * Has your LinkedIn profile ever directly led to a job offer or a valuable connection? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! #BusinessEnglish #LinkedIn #Career #JobSearch #HR #CorporateJargon #Recruiting #Russia #english #learners

☀️The Marketing Tool I Trust Most ☀️ I’ll be honest with you. I see a lot of talk about complex marketing funnels, aggressive ads, and algorithms. And while I’ve dabbled in it all, the single most effective channel for my work has always been something much simpler and more human: word-of-mouth 😌 When I look back, the clients I cherish the most, the long-term partnerships that have shaped my work and lifestyle, almost all came from a simple, powerful phrase: "... recommended you." ❗️There's data to back this up. Studies like one from Nielsen show that 83% of people trust recommendations from friends and family above all other advertising. That’s a staggering level of trust you can’t simply buy. For me, word-of-mouth isn't just a channel; it's my essential growth engine. Why? * It’s Built on Real Trust. A recommendation is a pre-qualified lead. They come to you already believing in your value. * It’s Cost-Effective. My investment isn't in ad spend; it's in delivering such an exceptional experience that my clients become my marketers. * It decreases stress. These clients won’t argue about the price and ask for discounts, won’t be suspicious and on guard. * It Creates a Community. The people who find me this way aren't just clients; they become part of my brand's story. 🌚 Now, I won’t sugarcoat it. The main disadvantage, in my experience, is time. You can't just "turn on" word-of-mouth overnight. It takes time to deliver great results, time for that client to have a conversation, and time for that "buzz" to build momentum. It’s a slow burn, not a flash in the pan. But I’ve learned you can actively fuel this engine. Here’s what works for me: 1. I Don't Be Shy to Ask. After a successful project or a student's great progress, I make a point to say: "I'm so glad I could help. If you know anyone else who might benefit from what I do, I'd be truly grateful if you passed on my name." It feels personal and sincere. 2. I Focus on Creating "Wow" Moments. I think about how my service can be a story they’d want to tell. Was it the extra piece of advice that made everything click? The personalized follow-up? I strive to make my work not just good, but remarkable. 3. I Invest in Relationships, Not Just Transactions. I check in with past clients. I remember their goals, family/work situation etc.. For me, this human connection is the core of it all. When you genuinely care about your clients, they feel it, and they remember it. So, while I still keep an eye on modern marketing trends, my foundation is this organic, trust-based growth. It required patience at the start, but the loyal community it has built for my little “business” is worth more than any quick click. I'm curious – do you use word-of-mouth in your strategy? How do you nurture it? What else do you use? #businessenglish #english #learners #teachers #MarketingReflection #WordOfMouth #SmallBusinessGrowth #ClientRelations #BusinessStrategy

Why "Learning Harder" Doesn't Work 🧐 (And What to Do Instead) Ever felt like you're putting in the hours, but the material just isn't sticking? You're not alone. Many of us carry the baggage of outdated learning methods from our school days. Well-meaning teachers often gave one-size-fits-all advice: "Read it again," "Write it out ten times," or simply "Memorize it." Sound familiar? The problem isn't a lack of effort. The problem is that we're trying to learn using someone else's blueprint. We are all unique, and we perceive and process information in different ways. What works for your colleague might be a total waste of time for you. The key to optimizing your effort and maximizing results? Understanding your personal learning style. Modern pedagogy often highlights four main perceptual channels: 👁 Visual: You learn by seeing. 👂 Auditory: You learn by hearing. ✍️ Digital (Analytical): You learn through logic and systems. 🏃 Kinesthetic: You learn by doing. This isn't just crucial for learners to know themselves; it's a game-changer for educators. When a teacher understands a student's dominant channel, they can tailor the approach, select the most effective tasks, and turn a struggle into a success. ❗️❗️❗️SOooooo: ✅ For Learners (Russian Speakers): To discover your own type here are two professional psychometric tests https://psytests.org/trait/sensor.html https://psytests.org/trait/opmv.html For Teachers: Here’s my presentation on this topic from a conference. The presentation includes a detailed breakdown of each learner type's characteristics, so you can identify them in your students without formal testing, along with a toolkit of the most efficient tasks for each style. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yc3fzJKau_4aaZ1aH9xKzVMfabCg1DS5Rl4i31JU8pU/edit?usp=sharing And here's the beautiful conclusion: while individualization is the goal, the ultimate answer is variety and polymodality. The most effective learning environment doesn't cater to just one style but skillfully blends all four, creating a rich and engaging experience for every student in the room. What's your learning type? Share in the comments! 👇 #learners #teachers #LearningStyles #EffectiveLearning #TeachingTips #SelfDevelopment #VisualLearner #AuditoryLearner #KinestheticLearner
