So there's this website me and my bro built about a year ago on WordPress even though, I really hate WordPress but that's a story for another day. Yesterday I logged in and found out it was hacked. There were admin users I never created, 22 spam posts in Russian sitting on our blog, and hidden links to some scam website buried in a few of our pages. The links were pushed off screen with CSS so visitors never see them, only Google does. That's the whole point, they use your site to boost their scam pages in search. No idea how long it was sitting there before I noticed. Anyway, spent the day cleaning it up. Deleted the fake accounts and all the spam posts, removed every plugin we weren't actually using, updated everything, changed all the passwords and set up 2FA with Wordfence. Moral of the story: if you have a WordPress site, don't just leave it running and forget about it. Outdated plugins, leaked passwords are how they get in. Go update yours today, use strong password and enable 2FA.
