Mumbai: In a move that has caught the attention of Maharashtra's bureaucracy and legal circles alike, State Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe responded swiftly to the Bombay High Court's observation that food safety inspections should not be confined to private eateries and food businesses alone, but should also extend to government-run canteens. And what happened next surprised many. Within 24 hours of the court's remarks, the FDA did not begin with just any government office. Instead, Mundhe's team conducted an inspection at the Bombay High Court's own canteen, placing the very institution that had called for broader enforcement under the same regulatory scanner. The findings of that inspection, however, have not yet been made public. The inspection drive did not stop there. The FDA also raided the Mantralaya canteen, located inside Maharashtra's administrative headquarters. Officials found basic lapses in food-handling practices, with staff not wearing hand gloves and head caps while preparing and serving food. They were immediately directed to follow mandatory hygiene protocols, while food items were covered with protective mesh nets to minimise contamination. Although no major violations have been publicly disclosed, the inspections sent a clear message: food safety norms are expected to apply equally to everyone -whether a roadside eatery, a private food company, or a canteen operating within the state's most powerful institutions.
