btw while reading about this movie i have come across a lot of criticism of jojo rabbit with some people even labelling it nazi propaganda because of its portrayal of nazis as comically harmless beings while failing to adequately depict the horrors of the holocaust. however i disagree with this interpretation and find it utterly stupid because i think it overlooks the very perspective through which the film is trying to tell its story. taika waititi (who is jewish himself) presents the narrative largely through the eyes of a 10yo boy who has been conditioned since childhood to idolise hitler and embrace nazi ideology because that is how fascists build their empire. the absurdity of the propaganda, the posters, and the ridiculous portrayal of hitler are all part of the film's satirical approach. we are watching a child's distorted understanding of the world gradually collide with the reality of the ideology he has been taught to worship. the film's use of comedy does not trivialise fascism or the holocaust. rather imo, it strips nazism of the grandeur and authority it attempts to project by exposing its inherent absurdity. ofc one can reasonably debate whether comedy is an appropriate medium for approaching such a horrific chapter of history or whether the film adequately conveys the suffering of its victims but calling it nazi propaganda simply because it does not depict nazis in the traditionally menacing manner seems to me to be nitpicking for the sake of it.
