DON’T BE EMOTIONAL ‼️ One of the most subtle ways Shaitan deceives us is through our emotions. In our pursuit of the truth, it is incredibly easy to be swayed by the tears of a speaker, the outward piety in someone’s dressing, or the fiery zeal (hamāsah) of their delivery. But emotional reasoning is not the yardstick of our religion. Islam is built upon a firm foundation: what Allah said, what His Messenger ﷺ said, and how the Sahabah understood it. This does not mean Muslims are supposed to be robotic or void of feeling. To lack emotion is to lack humanity. The Prophet ﷺ was the most complete of humans—he laughed, he grieved, he loved deeply, and he wept. But he drew a sharp and impenetrable line between natural human emotion and the implementation of the religion. When it came to the Deen, the only currency was evidence. Consider his beloved uncle, Abu Talib. Abu Talib protected him, loved him, and raised him, but he died upon disbelief. In Islam, a disbeliever does not possess the same hurmah (sanctity) in death as a Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ did not allow his immense grief and familial love to alter the rulings of Allah. He did not establish special Islamic funeral rites for him. Instead, he instructed Ali to go and cover his father beneath the sand. The emotion was real, but the religion remained objective. We see this same unwavering adherence to evidence over emotion in the Sahabah. We are taught to respect our elders and revere the great men of this Ummah, but that reverence never overrides the text. Abdullah ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما famously became frustrated with people who tried to counter the Sunnah by quoting the opinions of the two greatest men after the Prophets: Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما. He warned them: “I fear that stones are about to rain down upon you from the sky! I say to you, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,’ and you say to me, ‘Abu Bakr and Umar said!’” If the opinions of Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما cannot be weighed against the words of the Prophet ﷺ, then how can we weigh the religion against our own fleeting feelings, biases, or attachments? This is the balance of Islam. We do not discard our intellect, nor do we abandon wisdom and respect when dealing with people. But when it comes to the truth, we do not judge based on tears, appearances, or passion.
