🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during a meeting with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev (Astana, May 20, 2024) 💬 Thank you for setting aside the time for this meeting and the opportunity to meet with you. On May 18, you had a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin. He conveys his warmest regards and best wishes on the occasion of your birthday. You maintain close communication. You have already met in person twice this year (in addition to telephone conversations). Meetings are scheduled to be held as part of #SCO and #CSTO in Kazakhstan. We are also preparing for #BRICS summit in Kazan in October and hope that Astana will accept our invitation to participate in the events for the partner countries. Our respective Prime Ministers maintain regular contacts and will soon meet in Ashgabat at #CIS Council of Heads of Government. Today, I have held talks with Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu, both one-on-one and as part of broader talks with the delegations’ participation. Our Foreign Ministries are consistently working to implement the agreements reached between you and President Putin, including the Joint Statement adopted in 2023 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Treaty of Neighbourliness and Alliance in the 21st century. 🤝 We have a Joint Action Plan for 2024-2026, which fills our relations substantively. We noted the leaders’ commitment to implementing other projects that will make the lives of our people more comfortable and our interactions easier. This is an important area as well. We appreciate our economic and financial relations and look forward to the entire range of our ties that cover almost all areas of human activity continuing to expand steadily.

⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on riots in New Caledonia   On May 13, thousands of people took to the streets in the capital of French New Caledonia to protest against France’s colonial policies. The rally grew into island-wide riots that claimed the lives of several local residents and policemen. Dozens of law enforcers were wounded, with hundreds of protesters put into custody. As is common knowledge, interfering in the internal affairs of foreign states is against our principles, as is to give or press advice on how to deal with internal problems or crises. This is characteristic of the West and, not in the least, of France itself, although, instead of mentoring others, Paris should better look at its own deep-down problems. After all, it is clear that the tragic events in New Caledonia are the consequence of long-standing antagonisms and the growing dissatisfaction with their status on the part of the Kanaks, the indigenous people of New Caledonia, who make up almost 40 percent of this French overseas territory’s population. The pretext for yet another surge of public discontent was the consideration by the French Parliament of a bill designed to change the local voting rules, in effect since 1998, and give the right to vote to all those, who have resided on the island for more than ten years. Opponents of this legislation saw it, with a good reason, as an attempt to finally deprive the Kanaks of their fundamental right to self-determination and cut the land from under the feet of those advocating independence. Not accidentally, the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front, one of the leading New Caledonian Parties, branded Paris’ actions as “re-colonisation.” We regard the public and political crisis in New Caledonia as stemming from the lack of finality in the process of its decolonisation and as yet another confirmation that the French policy towards its former colonies, renamed “overseas territories,” is reaching an impasse. <...> ☝️ Currently, France governs 13 overseas territories and is attempting to meddle in the internal affairs of its former colonies across the globe. While occupying dozens of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America for centuries and brutally exploiting the local population, the French have committed numerous military crimes and crimes against humanity there. <...> ❗️ We call on Paris to refrain from an unjustified use of force against the protesters and respect the rights and liberties of the indigenous population of New Caledonia and other overseas territories under its control.

✉️ President Vladimir Putin expressed his deepest condolences to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over the death of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi ✍️ Please accept our deepest condolences in connection with the great tragedy that befell the Islamic Republic of Iran – a helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and several other prominent government leaders of your country. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi was an outstanding politician whose entire life was devoted to serving his Motherland. He enjoyed the well-deserved respect of his compatriots and high prestige beyond his country. As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good neighbourly relations between our countries and made great efforts to advance them to the level of strategic partnership. I have had the privilege of meeting Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi on multiple occasions, and I will always cherish the fond memories of this wonderful man. Please convey my heartfelt condolences and support to the family and friends of the late President, as well as to all those affected by this tragic incident. I extend my wishes for strength to the Iranian people as they navigate through this challenging and irreparable loss. Vladimir Putin

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question from the Moscow. Kremlin. Putin programme (Moscow, May 19, 2024) 💬 Sergey Lavrov: It’s high time for the Kiev regime to accept the reality “on the ground”. I hope that this message, which has been repeated many times, will be heeded and that the West will understand that it’s time to stop sacrificing Ukraine for its absolutely hopeless goals. ❓ Question: President of France Emmanuel Macron made a surprising statement, saying that he's afraid that if Russia wins then the Russian military infrastructure will be closer to Europe and Russian missiles will be closer to Europe. However, President Vladimir Putin has been saying for 20 years that Western infrastructure is approaching us. And the West has told us not to worry and relax. What would you advise the West to do now? Sergey Lavrov: Let them relax too, if they can. We know very well what we are capable of, including in terms of all possible scenarios for the further development of the situation in Ukraine.

🇷🇺🇵🇬 48 years ago — on May 19, 1976 — the Soviet Union and Papua New Guinea established diplomatic relations. The USSR was one of the first states to recognise the Pacific country after it gained independence from Australia. In 1990-1992, the USSR and then the Russian embassy operated in Port Moresby. 🤝 Today, the Russian Federation is represented in Papua New Guinea by the non-resident Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia. The two countries continue to develop relations in many areas. ℹ️ The name of the Russian scientist and humanist, traveler and public figure, Nikolai Miklukho-Maklai, is inseparably linked with Papua New Guinea. He made his legendary trip to the northeastern coast of New Guinea Island in 1871. It was him who left a good impression of Russia and was the first to fight for independence among Papua New Guineans. In 1971, Soviet sailors established a memorial to Miklukho-Maklai on Garagasi Cape. In September 2014, thanks to the efforts of a Russian-Italian family of patrons, the renovated memorial was inaugurated. Today, the Mikhlukho-Maklai Foundation works to further develop humanitarian ties with the university and archives of Papua New Guinea, with the assistance of the Russian Embassy. It stays in contact with the descendants of the people Miklukho-Maklai knew, and helps organise new research expeditions with this influence. #RussiaPapuaNewGuinea

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment regarding Kiev regime’s terrorist attacks on Russian regions 💬 On May 16 and 17, the Kiev neo-Nazi regime used fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned speedboats to launch another massive attack on Crimea, the Krasnodar Territory and other Russian regions. Russian air defence forces destroyed and intercepted more than 100 UAVs (51 over the Crimean Peninsula, 44 over the Krasnodar Territory, six over the Belgorod Region, and one over the Kursk Region). The Black Sea Fleet naval aviation and patrol boats destroyed six unmanned speedboats. Earlier this week, Russian Defence Ministry reported the destruction of 20 US-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles, over 130 missiles, including US-made HIMARS and Czech-made Vampire, over 20 French-made Hammer guided bombs, and four British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles. These barbaric attacks with the use of Western-made weapons are clearly backed by the US and British curators overseeing Zelensky’s regime. They go beyond supplying it with ever longer-range missiles and heavy weapons and now authorise their use against Russia, further escalating the conflict. This Banderite clique seems to have come to believe in its own impunity amid the Western emissaries’ frequent visits to Kiev lately. ❗️ Once again, we would like to issue a stark warning to Washington, London, Brussels and other Western capitals, as well as Kiev which is controlled by them, that they are playing with fire. Russia will not leave unanswered these acts of aggression against its territory.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin visited Harbin Institute of Technology and met with Chinese and Russian students and faculty at the university (May 17, 2024) Key points: 💬 During our talks with President Xi Jinping yesterday, we pointed out with satisfaction that our cooperation in research and education is of priority significance for developing the entire range of Russian-Chinese relations, comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction. <...> To date, about 50,000 Chinese citizens are receiving a higher education in Russia. At the same time, 16,000 Russian citizens are studying in China, and this is not the limit. • China and Russia have 167 bilateral education programmes and there are 28 institutes with Russian participation in China. Overall, there are 12 Russian-Chinese university associations, which include about 600 institutes. The largest among them is the Association of Sino-Russian Technical Universities, which comprises 40 Russian and 36 Chinese universities, including Harbin Institute of Technology. • It is notable that active contacts are not only maintained between our universities but also between our scientists, who are doing research at the forefront of technological progress and in widely different fields, such as medicine, biology, innovative materials, space exploration and microelectronics. • Russian and Chinese students and educators are not only engaged in educational and scientific exchanges but also actively participate in bilateral cultural, social, creative, and volunteer initiatives. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the 8th Russia-China EXPO & the 4th Russia-China Forum on Interregional Cooperation together with Vice President of China Han Zheng 💬 Vladimir Putin: The fact that Harbin is hosting these two important events is highly symbolic, since Harbin is one of China’s biggest centres for research, education & innovation. • Since its founding in the late 19th century, Harbin has been a symbol of the close ties linking Russia & China and their intertwined destinies, and the mutual enrichment of their cultures & traditions. • Harbin is a city that commemorates our nations’ brotherhood-in-arms. More than 12,000 Soviet fighters perished in the battles to liberate Northeast China from Japanese invaders. It was Harbin that on September 16, 1945, hosted the joint Victory Parade to commemorate the end of hostilities on the Pacific Front & of #WWII. • We have laid flowers at the memorial to Soviet soldiers & officers. I am extremely grateful to the people of Harbin & the Chinese officials for preserving the memory of our liberators & our shared history of military glory. They have taken great care of our shared historical, spiritual & cultural heritage. • Building upon the glorious traditions of neighbourliness, friendship & cooperation, we can confidently look forward & embark on ambitious projects together, charting & implementing our grandest plans. President Xi Jinping & I discussed in detail the prospects of developing this close & multi-dimensional cooperation during our talks last night. 📈 The inseparable partnership between Russia & China directly contributes to the growth of both economies, ensuring our energy security, creating new production facilities & high-paying jobs, & ultimately improving the wealth & quality of life of our citizens. 🤝 Traditionally, the EXPO exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to promote industry-specific ties. Russia & China have taken turns in hosting this event for a number of years. #RussiaChina

✍️ President Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants in the 33rd Arab League Summit. ✉️ The Middle East is currently undergoing one of its most severe crises to date. The unprecedented escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of civilian lives and has heightened tensions in neighbouring countries and across the region. Given these tragic circumstances, the imperative for a just resolution to the Palestinian issue, based on internationally recognised principles, becomes particularly urgent. 🇷🇺 Russia remains committed to actively supporting the collective political and diplomatic efforts initiated by the Arab partners to immediately resolve the existing contradictions. Our country is pushing for a sustainable, long-term normalisation of the situation in Palestinian territories and other conflict zones, including Sudan, Yemen, Libya, Syria, and Lebanon, insisting that the sovereignty of all these countries must be guaranteed and international law respected. 🤝 I firmly believe that the further expansion of the longstanding friendly relations and constructive multifaceted cooperation between the Russian Federation and Arab countries aligns perfectly with our shared interests and contributes to fostering security and stability at both regional and global levels.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 During his state visit to China, Russia's President Vladimir Putin met with Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang. 💬 Vladimir Putin: We have signed the fundamental Joint Statement on deepening our comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction as we enter a new era. We have set ambitious goals and long-term guidelines for the development of the entire range of Russia-China relations. Over the past seven and a half decades, Russia-China relations have developed dynamically and reached an unprecedentedly high level. They are based on a solid foundation of neighbourliness, equality, mutual respect and support. This strategic approach serves the fundamental interests of the Russian and Chinese nations. ☝️ We have scored impressive results in practical cooperation through joint efforts. Today, we have already discussed statistics that highlight bilateral trade. <...> According to Chinese statistics, bilateral trade has exceeded $240 billion. Our statistics are slightly lower, but this is not important. We have reached such a high level in the past five years. <...> You have established cordial and business-like relations with Mr Mishustin, the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. We hope that your close and truly professional working relationship will continue. 🤝 In practice, the mechanism of regular meetings between Russian and Chinese heads of government has proven to be effective. This also applies to the implementation of the entire range of highest-level agreements. Moscow is set to host regular talks at the level of Prime Minister. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin and President of the PRC Xi Jinping made a speech at the gala concert devoted to the 75th anniversary of Russia-China diplomatic relations and the opening of Russia and China’s years of culture. 💬 Vladimir Putin: Seventy five years is a short period of time by the yardstick of centuries-long history of Russia and China, but during this period we managed to achieve serious results, amass the priceless experience of close, goodneighbourly interaction that embraced joint successes and achievements as well as important historical lessons. The main thing has always remained unchanged − the traditions of Russian-Chinese friendship, which has stood the test of time and continues to strengthen for the benefit of the peoples of our two countries. ❗️ We can be justly proud of the fact that Russian-Chinese relations have now reached the highest level in history and have acquired the character of genuine comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction. <...> Symbolically, such a large-scale joint project as the years of culture of Russia and China has been timed to the anniversary of our bilateral relations. <...> The suggested programme is not limited to Moscow and St Petersburg, Beijing and Shanghai. It covers many cities and regions of the two countries. ☝️ A well-known song of that time – 75 years ago − is often performed today. It has a sentence that has become a catch phrase – “Russian and Chinese are brothers forever.” I am confident that we will continue strengthening harmonious Russia-China partnership in this fraternal spirit. We will continue acting in unison for the sake of the successful development of our two countries and prosperity of our peoples with a view to enhancing the authority and influence of Russia and China in the world. Our cooperation has limitless opportunities and prospects. We are strong enough to cope with any obstacles and implement most ambitious plans. Read in full #RussiaChina

🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin and President of China Xi Jinping made a media statement following Russia-China talks (May 16, 2024) 💬 Vladimir Putin: The talks we have just finished highlighted the great significance that Moscow and Beijing attach to the development and strengthening of comprehensive Russia-China partnership and strategic interaction. This partnership can certainly set an example of ties between neighbouring states. Key talking points: • This state visit takes place in the year of the 75th Anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Our country was the first to recognise the People’s Republic of China on October 2, 1949, the day after its declaration. • I want to note the significance of the Joint Statement we have adopted, which sets new objectives and long-term directives for advancing the entire spectrum of Russian-Chinese relations. 📈 In 2023, bilateral trade surged by a quarter, reaching a new milestone of $240 billion, as reported by Chinese statistics. While there may be a slight variance in figures, the overall total is entirely accurate. <...> Currently, there are over 80 priority projects valued at approximately $200 billion in progress or in preparation for implementation through the respective intergovernmental commission. • Our talks have reaffirmed that Russia and China have similar or identical views on many international and regional issues. Both countries have an independent and sovereign foreign policy. We are working together to create a fairer and more democratic multipolar world order. • We have agreed to further improve communication between credit and banking institutions of Russia and China, while actively employing national payment systems to support our economic operators. 🤝 Russia and China are fruitfully working together in #BRICS and the #SCO. <...> Our countries are resolved to continue working to align integration processes underway within the framework of the #EAEU with China's Belt and Road Initiative. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 Beginning of Russia's President Vladimir Putin's conversation with President of China Xi Jinping 💬 Vladimir Putin: We will be marking a major milestone, an Anniversary. On October 1, we will celebrate 75 years since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and the very next day, on October 2, our two countries established diplomatic relations. The Soviet Union was the first country to recognise the new China. Moscow and Beijing have built a solid track record in terms of their practical cooperation. In 2023, bilateral trade increased by almost 25%, reaching $227 billion, which was quite a positive result. <...> It is of fundamental significance that relations between Russia and China do not depend on short-term considerations and are not directed against anyone. Today, our cooperation in global affairs is one of the main stabilising factors on the international stage. We are acting jointly to uphold the principles of justice and a democratic world order that reflects multipolar realities and is based on international law. 🎙 Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov answers questions during a plenary session of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Moscow, May 14, 2024) Key talking points: • Western efforts to preserve its hegemony have entered a critical phase. <...> China has emerged as a leader of global growth. This fact does not sit well with the US, which, along with its satellites, having brought the rest of the West to its heel, made a doctrinal statement that they cannot allow anyone to become stronger or more influential than Washington. So, objectively, alongside our Chinese colleagues we are interested in continuing to lead the efforts to establish a fairer and more democratic world order. 🤝 The duo of Moscow and Beijing is playing a crucial balancing role in international affairs. I am confident that the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to China will further strengthen our joint efforts. • Following the expansion of #BRICS, our representation in the #G20 has increased. Half of the G20 members are either BRICS members or share similar perspectives with us. Therefore, the G20 will undergo positive transformations emphasising the inclusion of the interests of other regions of the world and groups of countries rather than representing the interests of the "collective West". • We have numerous allies, and I have no doubt that we will have more of them which will contribute to democratising international relations, where every nation will have a rightful place of its own in global affairs based on its fair and actual contribution to the global economy, politics, and security system, as opposed to blackmail, threats, and ultimatums used by the West. 🌍 During the second Russia-Africa Summit, there were numerous plenary sessions and bilateral contacts with individual sub-regional African associations. <...> This is one of the main items on the agenda, including the implementation of the Declaration and Action Plan adopted at the second Summit. ✍️ President of Russia Vladimir Putin's interview to Xinhua News Agency ahead of his state visit to the People’s Republic of China (May 15, 2024) Key talking points: 🇷🇺🇨🇳 #RussiaChina partnership has always relied on the principles of equality and trust, mutual respect for the sovereignty and consideration of each other's interests. A special and prominent role in the development of our relations has belonged to wise and shrewd politicians and state leaders, such as Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China. • This unprecedented level of strategic partnership between our countries determined my choice of China as the first state to be visited after the official inauguration as the President of the Russian Federation. • October 1 marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The country is approaching this significant historical date with outstanding achievements, which we welcome as old, reliable and time-tested friends. The USSR was the first to recognize the PRC on the second day of its existence. • Russia-China ties as they are today, are free from the influence of either ideology or political trends. Their multidimensional development is an informed strategic choice based on the wide convergence of core national interests, profound mutual trust, strong public support and sincere friendship between the peoples of the two countries. 📈 Trade and economic relations between our countries are developing at a fast pace, showing strong immunity to external challenges and crises. Over the past five years, we have doubled the Russia-China turnover: it reached $227.8 billion last year, against $111 billion in 2019. • President of China Xi Jinping and I decided to declare 2024 and 2025 cross years of culture between Russia and China, so as to implement this large‑scale project in conjunction with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. 📄 Read in full

🎙 Briefing by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (Moscow, May 8, 2024) • Victory Day • BRICS events • The Ukrainian crisis • Situation in Moldova • Aggressive remarks by the French President • Situation in the Middle East 📰 Read 📺 Watch *** #BRICS Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS is picking up speed. Over 40 events across three main cooperation areas have already taken place, covering politics and security, the economy and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian exchanges. #Ukraine Just a few days ago EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell admitted clearly once again that the Ukrainian conflict had had a quick peaceful solution since the very beginning, but he personally and on behalf of the European Union did not want the combat to cease. We have talked about this many times (citing Mr Borrell and other EU officials) pointing to the EU’s long-term investments in financing arms supplies to Ukraine, with which they expect to prolong the armed confrontation for at least several more years (in their own words). This confirms the terrible reality: ordinary Ukrainians are just a tool that Vladimir Zelensky "sold" to the EU members in the name of his own enrichment and immorality, which is used to settle the West’s geopolitical scores with Russia. #France #NATO #EU We noted the recent aggressive remarks from the French leadership, which seem to be increasingly frequent. <…> It is noteworthy that the belligerent stance of the occupant of the Elysee Palace is not only met with disapproval among many EU and NATO allies but, crucially, among the majority of French citizens, too.
