Repost from Communism
On this day, 12 May 1918, blind anti-Nazi resistance activist Yakov Batyuk was born near Volyn, Ukraine.Batyuk lost his sight in an accident as a child. He later graduated from school and university, and became a lawyer, residing and working in Nizhyn. After the outbreak of World War II, as the Nazis approached, rather than evacuate, Batyuk remained in the city, and instead helped organise in the underground communist resistance to the Nazis.First, he worked in a cooperative which produced harnesses for horses used by German troops, and they sabotaged the harnesses, so that after they came into contact with water or snow they would cause a burning sensation and incapacitate the horse. In 1942, he organised a secret anti-fascist printing house, distributing thousands of leaflets. Later he supplied weapons to partisans by stealing them from Nazi warehouses, and helped recruit dozens of new resistance activists. In 1943, along with his sister, he managed to derail a train in North-East Ukraine. In August 1943 his entire group was arrested by the Gestapo and, after days of torture, 26 anti-fascists were executed, including Batyuk. @Communism Join the @Communists

Th8s post is a translation from one that originally appeared on the Kommunisti Mir channel. 160 years ago, on May 11, 1864, Ethel Lilian Voynich was born - Irish and English writer, translator of Russian literature, author of the famous revolutionary novel "The Gadfly". Daughter of the English mathematician J. Boole, wife of the Polish revolutionary M. Voynich. In 1887-1889 she lived in Russia. She was familiar with F. Engels and G. V. Plekhanov. Impressed by communication with the Russian writer and revolutionary S.M. Stepnyak-Kravchinsky, as well as reading the biographies of the great Italian patriots Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini, Voynich created the image and character of the hero of her book - Arthur Burton, who is also called Gadfly in the book. In 1897, the book "Gadfly" was published in the USA and England. The following year, its Russian translation appeared in Russia, where it was a tremendous success. The year the novel was published in Russia—1898—was the year of the First Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. The novel “The Gadfly” was loved, appreciated and distributed by prominent figures of the Communist Party during the struggle against autocracy: G.M. Krzhizhanovsky, E.D. Stasova, Ya.M. Sverdlov, M.I. Kalinin, I.V. Babushkin and others. Later, “The Gadfly” became the favorite book of the heroes of the Civil War - G.I. Kotovsky and N.A. Ostrovsky. Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was engrossed in The Gadfly, and Alexey Maresyev highly valued The Gadfly. This book was loved by M. Gorky, A. Fadeev, V. Mayakovsky. “The Gadfly” is one of the favorit books of the first cosmonauts: Yuri Gagarin, Andriyan Nikolaev and others... Voynich, forgotten in the USA, learned about her incredible popularity in the USSR, huge circulations and film adaptations of The Gadfly only in 1955: she was found in the USA by literary critic Evgenia Taratuta (See “Our Friend Ethel Lilian Voynich” Ogonyok Library, number 42, 1957)
