As Donald Trump’s historic hush money trial nears its end, the former president’s legal team has a crucial decision to make: whether or not to ask the jury to consider misdemeanor charges in the case.
During the charge conference that precedes closing arguments – which are expected early this week – Trump’s team, by New York state law, can request what’s known as a lesser included offense (LIO) to have the jury weigh 34 misdemeanor counts of falsifying business records instead of the 34 felony counts prosecutors have alleged the ex-president committed, former judge Ethan Greenberg wrote in the Wall Street Journal Sunday.
“An LIO is a less serious crime that carries lower penalties and is included within the definition of a more serious crime of which a defendant is accused,” Greenberg explained.

A large-scale search operation is underway, involving Red Crescent rescue teams, military personnel, and police support units, Tasnim news agency reported.
Local residents have reported foggy conditions in the area, which is hindering efforts to locate the helicopter and determine its status.
Other officials onboard the helicopter included the governor of East Azerbaijan province and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

A British court could give a final decision on Monday on whether WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange should be extradited to the United States over the mass leak of secret US documents, the culmination of 13 years of legal battles and detentions.
Two judges at the High Court in London are set to rule on whether the court is satisfied by US assurances that Assange, 52, would not face the death penalty and could rely on the First Amendment right to free speech if he faced a US trial for spying.
Assange’s legal team say he could be on a plane across the Atlantic within 24 hours of the decision, could be released from jail, or his case could yet again be bogged down in months of legal battles.

23 Iranian media report that a helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi encountered an accident in East Azerbaijan Province and some of his companions in the helicopter "managed to make contact with the center."
Meanwhile, IRIB News Agency wrote, "Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to reach the crash site."
Ali Zakari, Deputy Governor for Development in East Azerbaijan, told the "Sharq Network" website, "I have not yet arrived at the accident site and do not have details about the incident."
Zakari stated that the accident occurred near Varzeqan and continued, "There were three helicopters, two of which landed safely, and one of them crashed."
The provincial official emphasized that the number and identities of any potential casualties, as well as the exact cause and details of the incident, are not yet known.
Iran's Red Crescent announced that rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site.
