A first-of-its-kind snow leopard population assessment conducted across 6 Indian states has revealed crucial new data - an estimated 718 individuals inhabit about 120,000 sq km of Trans-Himalayan habitat in the country.
The 'Status of Snow Leopards in India' report by the Environment Ministry systematically surveyed over 70% of snow leopard range using advanced techniques.
It found the highest densities of 0.34 leopards per 100 sq km in Ladakh, which was estimated to harbor half the total population.
