A sudden release of water from a glacial lake, usually caused by the failure of a natural ice or moraine dam.
Causes:
Melting of glaciers
Ice/rock avalanches falling into the lake
Weakening or collapse of moraine dams
Earthquakes
Impact: Can cause sudden, destructive floods downstream, damaging villages, roads, bridges and farmland.

| 19 | Expansion of BRICS:
The 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg announced that the five-member grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) had invited six new members: Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina.
• With the proposed expansion, BRICS will comprise 46% of the world's population. Its share of global GDP will increase from 31.5% in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms to 37%, surpassing the G-7's GDP share of 30.7%.
• The five core members currently account for 23% of global exports and 19% of global imports. The inclusion of new members is projected to increase these figures by 3.7% and 3%, respectively.
• The most significant impact will be observed in the energy sector. In 2022, global oil production was approximately 90 million barrels per day, with the original five BRICS members accounting for 20% of global output. This share is expected to rise to 42% following the expansion.
