كيركيغارد يوضّح شغلة مهمة كلش هي أنّ السخرية irony مو هدف بحد ذاته ولا تكشف إلنا الحقيقة مباشرةً، بل هي طريقة للوصول للحقيقة. السخرية دائمًا تكون سلبية، بمعنى أنها ما تبني شي أو تنتج فكرة جديدة، هي فقط تهدم الأفكار القديمة. هذا الهدم مهم جدًا لإفساح المجال لبناء أفكار الجديدة، لكن بنفس الوقت لا يجب إعطاءه أكبر من حجمه أو إعتبار العبارات الساخرة تعبّر عن حقائق عميقة. بنفس الوقت، الهدم لازم ما يكون هدف بحد ذاته. لأن إذا انت مكضيها بس تهدم بأفكارك القديمة بدون ما تبدلهن بأفكار جديدة (وعلى شرط، تكون أحسن من القديمة)، فإنت دتصنع وضع أسوأ من السابق و"لو باقين على خياط العام أحسن."
