A testimony from Our international student My PhD Success Story Today marks one of the most defining milestones of my academic and professional journey: I am incredibly proud to celebrate the successful completion of my PhD in Economics at Bahir Dar University. My doctoral journey began in the 2020/2021 academic year, fueled by a vision to contribute meaningfully to knowledge, research, and societal development within the field of economics. This long journey demanded intense discipline, sacrifice, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. It was a rigorous process of exhaustive research, scholarly writing, international presentations, and continuous personal and professional transformation. I am deeply honored to graduate in this 2025/2026 academic year with an exemplary academic record. A particular crowning achievement of this journey was receiving an Excellent grade on my PhD dissertation research and examination. This top-tier mark reflects not only the high quality and rigor of the economic research itself but also the absolute dedication invested into every single page of the doctoral thesis. This achievement represents far more than a title; it symbolizes resilience in the face of academic hurdles, a passion for innovation, and a resolute commitment to community development. Every challenge encountered became a lesson, and every milestone fueled my determination to push boundaries. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Bahir Dar University for providing me with this scholarship and a vibrant environment that fosters research excellence and academic advancement. My deepest appreciation goes to my supervisors, examiners, professors, colleagues, family, and friends. Your invaluable guidance, critique, and constant belief in my potential made this momentous accomplishment possible. As I step into this next chapter, I look forward to channeling this expertise into higher education, impactful research, and public service—carrying forward the rigorous standards and values forged during this extraordinary journey. "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but its ultimate success is built through perseverance, commitment, and a relentless pursuit of excellence."

A commencement speech by one of our own_OUR international student! BAHIR DAR UNIVERSITY   CLASS OF 2026 GRADUATION SPEECH, JUNE 27, 2026   A DREAM COME TRUE.  Mr. President, Dr. Mengesha Ayene, Respective Vice Presidents, honorable BDU faculty members, distinguished guests, parents, friends  and most importantly the incredible Class of 2026 , good morning. I am Nyamuot Puot, a South Sudanese student graduating today from the Department of Journalism and Communication.    It is my greatest honor standing here today representing international students graduating at today's Bahir Dar University commencement and looking out at all your faces, my heart is full of gratitude; to God Almighty and to this great university, BDU. When we first arrived here from South Sudan, we knew we were not just stepping into a new environment, but into a completely different world that would later build us to who we are today. We left home to pursue a dream, and today, that dream has become true. So, today, my colleagues and I are celebrating a DREAM COME TRUE.     There is a saying that says; "HOME IS NOT JUST A PLACE WHERE YOU WERE BORN, IT'S THE PEOPLE YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH". So to my colleagues, faculty members, and BDU admins, you became our home.  We will forever cherish the social life we shared, from the late night discussions that turned into deeper conversations, to the loud laughter at the coffee places , to how you embraced us as international students and shared your culture with open arms. We didn’t just only learned from books in the libraries but we also learnt from each other and built a beautiful diverse campus community. Thank you for making us feel that we truly belong to BDU community.     Ladies and gentlemen, the road to this commencement wasn’t easy as international students because we faced a unique set of hurdles: we had to navigate cultural shifts, language barrier and academic pressures. It got to a point where the finishing line felt miles away, but looking around today those challenges didn’t break us but  they rather built us and taught us resilience, adaptabilty and the true meaning of perseverance.    However, we did not cross this finish line alone; therefore, on behalf of all international students graduating today, allow me to extend our deepest gratitude to the Office of External Relations and Partnership. Thank you for the care and coordination from the moment we arrived for you’ve been our safest net and has ensured we always had a voice. Your dedication made our journey not only manageable but also memorable .    Last but not least, allow me recognize my brother, who is among us today to celebrate me, your unwavering support kept me grounded and your sacrifices paved the way for me to stand on this stage today. Thank you for being my foundation.    As I wrap up, to the Class of 2026, WE MADE IT. But I have a few words for all of us: as we close this chapter and step into the unknown, do not leave your resilience behind . The outside world needs our voices and our unique perspectives. Do not be afraid of the challenges ahead because Bahir Dar Univeristy has already proven that we can survive, adapt and thrive anywhere. Let us go out there and apply, build, inspire and lead for our journey is just beginning.    Once again CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2026.     Thank you all for your attention.
