In Comparative Mythology, the attractive surface betrays the superficial seeker. Some of these equations will seem strange at first glance. However, they are not for shock value. This is a summary of a long cleansing of the swamp, which still continues. Follow up the argument. Ask why. Read the articles or watch the accompanying mythstream series (below). A chart can never be perfect, and so it is foolish to make one. Yet a chart is able to convey a dense set of details that others can search with, much like a map. This map, dense with discoveries, guides the careful seeker close to the goal. Be more thorough than everyone else, and your undertaking will survive where others have not. ____ Thanks to Arno Prauner for putting this into a chart, and to Josephus for significantly contributing, as well as to all others who have discussed. * Watch our Deity Chart series here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLo8PunHbewPxM8xS9ZIOQvdla2KnBZKEa&si=Od3qX4-kgWD0QuL4 • O'Gravy, The Sun Riders @solarcult

Vedic Evidence for the Absolute, from the Earliest Layer of the Vedas The purpose of this material is to show that the Rig Veda (1500-1000 BCE) has no "hard polytheism" in any of its strata, and to have the verses that mention the mystical Absolute of this Veda available for reference. If the gods are aièn éontes, as Hesiod says repeatedly, then Time and Being in Hesiod do not originate in the airy realm of Chaos or pure flux. Time, Being, and Chaos alike participate in an eternal state that precedes all beginning. We can imagine Hesiod in the intro hymn saying, with the Rig Vedic poet of 1.164.37-42: "I do not understand what sort of thing I am here: though bound, I roam about in secret by my thinking. When the first-born of truth [=Agni] has come to me, only then do I attain a share of this speech here." "The syllable [akṣare] of the verse [ṛco] upon which all the gods have settled, is in the highest heaven— he who does not know that (syllable), what will he accomplish by his verse? Only those who know it sit together here. [...] The buffalo-cow [=Speech] has bellowed, fashioning oceans. [...] she has a thousand syllables in the highest heaven. Seas flow everywhere from her: by that the four directions live, from that the syllable flows, upon that does everything live." “Then when the ancient dawns dawned forth, in the track of the cow a great imperishable (syllable) [akṣaram] was born [/was discerned] [ví jajñe], which tends to the commandments of the gods: great is the one and only lordship of the gods.” - RV 3.55.1 Cosmogony and divine commands themselves rest on the imperishable sacred word, which is eternal divine power, and which is harnessed by the poet in an act of archetypal world-creation. Who is it in Shatapatha Brahmana that turns the inert chaos-Air into the cosmos? 6.1.1 tells us: “The Rishis (seer-poets) assuredly.” The archetypal poet is the vessel of the demiurgic power of sacred speech, harnessed from the eternal source to give form to the world. His speech is cosmogony, and in this moment he embodies the god who conducts the speech in the eternal frame (Apollo/Cronus). Note here that Hesiod is given a laurel branch by the 9 muses, Apollo as their leader, while the Demiurge/shanachie (storyteller-poet) Fintan is given a branch by the double-3-named god of Eternity, Trefuilngid Tre-Eochair, to name and form and plant the microcosm that is Ireland. Finally, the word for truth spoken by the voice of the Muses may imply the un-concealing or remembering of what lives eternally beyond the veil of ignorance and forgetfulness: the word is alēthéă, etymologically "un-concealment/un-forgetting". If what is true is what is un-concealed, then this implies a veil that has concealed a reality in the first place, giving us a structure of "Fundamental Reality > Veil of Ignorance > Truth attained by lifting the veil", a structure that is found in multiple Indo-European traditions: Irish, Vedic, arguably Norse. In this way a-lēthéă as the negation of lethe (forgetfulness) is comparable to In-dui (the Un-Ignorant) as the negation that supercedes Alldui, the great Veil of Ignorance, which follows from the Absolute in the Irish god genealogy of Lebor Gabala Erenn. Memory (Mnēmosynē) being the mother of the Muses in Hesiod's introduction drives this interpretation home, since Memory giving rise to the Muses and their true speech implies a reality before the process of forgetting in order to remember it again, and for this to be called Truth. We ought not throw out the earliest books of the Rig Veda, and Hesiod, the earliest cosmogony of the Greeks, because we dislike this conclusion. This would leave the us with nothing to stand on, not even Chaos, all to avoid what the texts make evident: we have here the most archaic Indo-European worldview, shared from Greece to India, to Ireland to Germania, and on into Rome. Ready thy Hesiod. - O’Gravy, The Sun Riders @solarcult

THE HESIOD ISSUE Ámbrotos Óssa, Aièn Éontes, Alētheia: The Imperishable Voice, The Eternally Existing, and Truth in Hesiod It is not actually the case that "Chaos is the first thing of all in Hesiod’s Theogony,” and we should never concede such an uninformed framing. Chaos is first in the spoken cosmogony. The Eternally Existant gods, the Imperishable Voice, and Truth itself come first, and are the foundation of the cosmogony. The spoken cosmogony, by definition, is made of the speech of Hesiod which is dramatically breathed into (enépneusan, ln. 31) him by the divine Muses. The introductory verses lay out exactly what this means: The Muse-given voice of Hesiod is an imperishable divine thing (ámbroton óssan, imperishable voice, ln. 43), matching the imperishable syllable (akṣara) of the Rig Veda, which is the Absolute as the essence of speech. This divine voice in Hesiod is unified (homēreusai, ln. 39), as the muses are of one mind (homóphronas, ln. 60), and it can tell of what is true fundamentally (alēthéă, ln. 28, cf. etúmoisin, ln. 27), just as much as of the many (pollá, ln. 27) false things (pseúdea, ln. 27). The one mind of the Muses may be identifiable with their leader Apollo Musagetes, or their grandfather Cronus, gods of the Divine Mind (nóos, ln. 51) itself, just as the principle of the voice, which repeatedly is said to flow (rhéei, ln. 39) may be identifiable with Cronus’ wife, and their grandmother, Rhea. Even flow itself is embodied as a deity, the great goddess, who never lacks her Mind-embodying male consort to balance her, and specifically to subdue (dmētheisa, ln. 453) her. Thus flow is subdued by the power of divine Mind. This imperishable voice of the Muses, downstream of Cronus and Rhea, with Apollo its conductor, has for its theme the supreme (mégistos, ln. 49), almighty (eristhenéos, ln. 4) godhead centered in Cronian Zeus, who, with the other gods, is called eternally existing (aièn eóntōn, ln. 21, 33),which requires there be an eternal state above the flow of time. The repeated aièn eóntōn alone debunks the claim that an eternal frame is lacking in Hesiod. Even besides the divine voice that underlies the cosmogony of Hesiod, Chaos is still merely an Air deity (identified with Respiration in Aristophanes and called the Middle Air), and there is still one Chaos. Chaos is not pure indeterminacy in Hesiod, as some imagine based on modern concepts of chaos. It is instead well-defined by the imperishable voice that gives it a unified form and distinguishes it from the other gods. The name and form of this one Air god Chaos then derives from that which is supreme and eternally existing, the voice which utters fundamental truth and cannot perish. It is this divine voice that, according to the introductory hymn of Theogony, gives humans the power to discern (diakrínonta, ln. 85) the divine laws (thémistas, ln. 85), exactly as the seers discern (ví jajñe) the imperishable syllable that tends the commandments of the gods (vratā devānām) in RV 3.55.1. As in Rig Veda, the human kings of Theogony who discern these divine laws via the imperishable voice derive from this their authoritative commandments, making straight judgments (itheiēis dikēisin, ln. 86) possible. All of this is from the imperishable voice that unconceals the laws of the eternal gods. The Hesiodic order of authority arising from an eternally existing divine power is clear, and, without this eternal origin, even Chaos would have no foundation. Yet it does. (continued) @solarcult
