The Swiss Federal Criminal Court ruled that the bank failed to put adequate safeguards in place to stop an employee from laundering money. The penalty was 3 million Swiss francs ($3.7 million)—a slap on the wrist for a bank of its stature. But the real hit came when the court ordered the seizure of 400 million Swiss francs. That money is gone for good. Add another $985 million in assets, property, and cash already confiscated earlier in the case.
The person at the center of it all is Gulnara Karimova — daughter of Uzbekistan's ex-president and a former UN ambassador — walked away without a conviction. Swiss prosecutors dropped the case against her because she's already behind bars in Uzbekistan and wouldn't be extradited.
Switzerland has now used the same corporate liability framework — holding banks responsible for failing to prevent money laundering — against four private institutions: Pictet (sanctioned, still standing), Credit Suisse (sanctioned, then collapsed), Bank J.
