Just as the recitation of the Qur’ān is the hallmark of Ramaḍān, dhikr is the hallmark of the blessed days of Dhul Ḥijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There are no days greater in the sight of Allah, or in which good deeds are more beloved to Him than these 10 days. So recite a great deal of tahlīl (لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ), takbīr (اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ) and taḥmīd ( اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ”) (Aḥmad). - Dhikr: The Hallmark Of The Days Of Dhul Hijjah.

To gain the full benefit of dhikr in these blessed days, it is important to understand the meaning of these short yet comprehensive words. Tahlīl (لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ) The greatest statement ever uttered, the foundation of faith and the cornerstone of existence itself لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ. For it, the heavens and the earth were created. For it, thousands of messengers were sent. For it, the final hour will occur, the creation will be gathered and questioned, and then driven either into Hell or Paradise. When uttered sincerely, it leaves the realms of this earth and ascends to the Magnificent Throne of Allah. It is the guarantor of one’s ultimate success: its utterer will be saved from Hell, and will be guaranteed Paradise and the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ. ُلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ is the best form of remembering Allah (dhikr). It outweighs the seven heavens and the seven earths. On the Day of Judgement, it will outweigh all sins on the Scale. What Does لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ Mean? There is no god, deity or being which deserves to be worshipped and obeyed except Allah. It means to be a slave of Allah alone, and not of any another being, ideology, object or desire. With it, we profess Allah’s Lordship over all creation, and thereby His exclusive right to be worshipped alone. He Alone has the Most Perfect Names and Attributes. He is the King who has no partner, the One Who has no competitor, the Self-Sufficient Master who has no offspring, and there is nothing like Him. He is Unique; the First who was never preceded by non-existence and the Last who will never come to an end. - Dhikr: The Hallmark Of The Days Of Dhul Hijjah.

▪️What Does سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ (Tasbih) Mean? Subhaanallah (سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ) means to glorify Allah above any imperfection or deficiency i.e. Allah is free from all defects. Allah is the Most Glorified who has no partner or rival, who possesses every aspect of perfection, and whose actions are pure and free from evil. ▪️What Does اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ (Tahmid) mean? Alhamdhulillah (الحمد لله) is an expression that encompasses both: (1) Gratitude for what Allah has blessed us with; īmān, life, health etc. (2) Praise: Allah is worthy of every possible praise on account of His very existence, His mercy, beauty, generosity and all of His other noble Attributes and Names. All of His Attributes are perfect; be they of His majesty (jalāl) or beauty (jamāl). Even if none of His slaves praised Him, He would still be worthy of all praise. In truth, it is Allah who praises Himself on the tongues of His slaves. Any slave who praises Him is only able to do so following His permission for such praise. Our praise of Him emanates from our love and reverence of Him. Our praise of Him is, in fact, a blessing from Him which deserves even more praise. Even if we were to spend our entire life praising Him, this would be insufficient. Whilst uttering اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ, we should reflect on the blessings of Allah and His Perfect Names. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When Allah grants a blessing to a slave, upon which the slave praises Him, the praise of the slave is better than the blessing itself ” (Ibn Mājah). ▪️What Does اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ (Takbir) Mean? Allah Akbar (اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ) means ‘Allah is Greater than…’ By not specifying what He is Greater than, we are saying that He is Greater than everything. Allah is Greater than anything we can imagine, and His greatness encompasses all things: He is Great in His Essence, His Names, His Attributes and His Actions. Allah is Supreme and Transcendent above every limitation and deficiency that is inherent in created beings. ______ سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ: Negating all defects, flaws, and shortcomings from Allah. اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ : Affirming all of the attributes of perfection and majesty for Allah. اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ : Magnifying Allah and proclaiming His greatness above everything. - Dhikr: The Hallmark Of The Days Of Dhul Hijjah.

4. Thanking Allah for this new opportunity to obtain the (generous) rewards for the righteous deeds performed during this season or time of the year. We should also greet this time of the year by thanking Allah the Mighty and Majesty for providing us with this new opportunity to obtain (generous) rewards during this season or time of the year. And for allowing us to live and see another season during which we may obtain more rewards, especially in the light of the fact that many people were denied during this opportunity either by death or illness or through neglectfulness.

We should also greet this time of the year by seeking to get closer to Allah Subhaanahu Wata’āla by remembering Him, obeying Him, worshipping Him, reading the Qur’an. Also, by serving Him and helping His religion (Islam) and by defending the Qur’an and Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ and helping Muslims (as much as we can).

8- Pilgirmage to Makkah is performed during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Another virtue of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah is that the pilgrimage to Makkah, which is one of the pillars of Islam, is performed during them. The virtues of performing Hajj are many. One of these virtues is mentioned in the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: ‎حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ أَبُو الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حَازِمٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏"‏ مَنْ حَجَّ لِلَّهِ فَلَمْ يَرْفُثْ وَلَمْ يَفْسُقْ رَجَعَ كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ ‏"‌‏.‏ Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew." Allah Azzawajal completed the Religion of Islam on the Day of Arafat which is one of the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah! On that day it was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: Al-Ma'idah 5:3 ‎ ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمَ دِينًاۚ “...This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion....”

5- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the ‘well known days’ during which Allah had legislated that it is permissible to thank Him for the cattle and livestock that He has blessed us with. Allah the Most High says: Al-Hajj 22:27 ‎وَأَذِّن فِى ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj). That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade, etc.), and mention the Name of Allah on appointed days (i.e. 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th day of Dhul-Hijjah), over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice) (at the time of their slaughtering by saying: Bismillah, WAllahu-Akbar, Allahumma Minka wa Ilaik). Ibn Rajab رحمه الله said: “The majority of the scholars are of the opinion that the meaning of: ‘the well known days’ is the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah”.

4- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah fall at the end of ‘the well known months of Hajj’. The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah fall at the end of ‘the well known months of Hajj’ for those who are of the opinion that ‘the well known months’ are: Shawwal, Dhul-Qi’dah and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. As for those who are of the opinion that the entire month of Dhul-Hijjah is included in the ‘well known months’, then the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah still fall somewhere within the well known months of Hajj.

7- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are generally considered the best days of the year. Because the Prophet ﷺ said: أفضل أيام الدينا أيام العشر “The best days in this worldly life are the (first) ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah).” [Narrated by Al-Bazzar and authenticated by Shaykh Al-Albaanee] Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said: “It has been said in general, the best days of the year are the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah- just as the Hadith says- and that they are far more superior than the last ten days of Ramadan. That is because Allah has legislated prayer, and fasting, and voluntary charity etc. during the month of Ramadan, however, the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are distinguished for having been chosen for the performance of the rights of Hajj! Others have stated that since Laylatul Qadr is one of the last ten days of Ramadan that those days are superior to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah because Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months! Still, others have said -in an attempt to choose a middle position- that the days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days and the nights of Ramadan are the best nights. Having done so, they have taken into account all of the proofs and evidences, and Allah Knows the best.” [Refer to Tafsir Ibn Katheer, Vol.2, page 325] Ibn Hajar said: “Apparently what distinguishes the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and renders them superior to all the other days is the fact that the Ummahatul-‘Ibaadah (i.e. the most important forms of worship) are performed during them. They are (1) prayer, (2) Fasting, (3) Charity, (4) Hajj and there are no other days that combine (so many important forms of worship).” [Fathul Baaree]

Includes: 1- Allah Subhaanahu Wata’ala swore by these days in a clearly understood verse of the Qur’an: Al-Fajr 89:1 ‎وَٱلْفَجْرِ By the dawn; Al-Fajr 89:2 ‎وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said in his explanation of this verse: “The intending meaning of: {And (by) ten nights} is the (first) ten days of Dhul-Hijjah as has been stated by Ibn ‘Abbas, Ibn Az-Zubair, Mujaahid, as well as others from the Pious Predecessors and those who come after them.” [Ibn Katheer said the statements of those Companions were authentically transmitted. Refer to Tafsir Ibn Katheer (Vol.4, pg.651)] Ibn Rajab رحمه الله said: “As for (the intended meaning of): {And by the Ten Nights} it refers to (the first) ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. That is the correct (explanation of the meaning of this verse) and it is the opinion held by the vast majority of the scholars of Tafsir (explanation of the Qur’an) from the Pious Predecessors and others, and it has been authentically transmitted that this was the opinion of Ibn ‘Abbas. 2. Learning about the appropriate conduct and acts of worship for that time of the year. We should also prepare for this time of the year by learning about the appropriate conduct and actions for that time of the year. For example, learning about the legal rulings concerning the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. This is so that every Muslim can worship Allah upon knowledge, thus enabling him to allowing falling into Bid’ah (newly invented matters in the religion) deeds joch are now associated with certain seasons and times of the year.

3- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are part of the forty days that Allah Subhaanahu Wata’āla spent with Musa (عليه السلام) (I.e. at the top of Mount Sinai)! Allah the Most High Says: Al-A'raf 7:142 ‎وَوَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَٰثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَٰهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَٰتُ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةًۚ “And We appointed for Musa (Moses) thirty nights and added (to the period) ten (more), and he completed the term, appointed by his Lord, of forty nights..” Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said: “The scholars of Tafsir have differed about the ten days (that Allah added in order to make the period of time that Musa (عليه السلام) spent on Mount Sinai 40 days). The majority of the scholars are of the opinion that the first thirty days were the entire month of Dhul-Qi’dah, and the remaining ten days were the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. This was the opinion of Mujaahid, Masrooq, and Ibn Juraij. Likewise, it has been reported that this was the option of Ibn ‘Abbas as well as others.” [Refer to Tafsir Ibn Katheer, Vol.2, page 325]

9- The Day of ‘Arafat falls on one of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Able there virtue of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah is that the Day of ‘Arafat falls on one of them. The Day of ‘Arafat is a great day during which Allah frees many of His Worshippers from the fire of Hell. The Messenger ﷺ said: ‎حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الأَيْلِيُّ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي مَخْرَمَةُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يُونُسَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ، يَقُولُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَا مِنْ يَوْمٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَنْ يُعْتِقَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ عَبْدًا مِنَ النَّارِ مِنْ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ وَإِنَّهُ لَيَدْنُو ثُمَّ يُبَاهِي بِهِمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ فَيَقُولُ مَا أَرَادَ هَؤُلاَءِ ‏"‌‏.‏ 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: There is no day when God sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of 'Arafa. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want? Sahih Muslim, 1348

1. Sincere Repentence. We should prepare for this time of year with sincere repentance to Allah the Most High. The conditions for sincere repentance include: ▫️To immediately stop the act of disobedience without any procrastination or delay. ▫️To feel remorse for the sins that have been previously committed. ▫️To have firm resolve never to return to disobedience and sin ever again and to (instead) perform righteous deeds. ▫️(In the event that the sin involves taking the right of another then) that right must be returned to him (i.e. money, etc).

10- Yawm-un-Nahr falls on one of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Another virtue of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah is that Yawm-un-Nahr falls on one of them. Yawm-un-Nahr is also called the “greatest day of Hajj’ (i.e. because several important rights of Hajj must be performed on that day such as; slaughtering the sacrificial animal, shaving the head (for men) or shortening the hair (for women), stoning all three jamaraat, and the Tawaaf of Hajj).

The Messenger of Allah said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those ten days." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! Not even Jihad in Allah Cause?" The Messenger of Allah said: "Not even Jihad in Allah's Cause, unless a man were to out with his self and his wealth and not return from that with anything." Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 757 This Hadith as well as others, clearly explains the virtues of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah and the superiority of performing righteous actions during them. Al-Haafidh ibn Rajab said: “This Hadith is proof that performing (good) deeds during those days are most beloved to Allah than performing (good) deeds during any other days on earth without exception. Therefore, if performing (good) deeds during the (first) ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah) is better and more beloved to Allah than doing so during any other time during the year, then the actions that we do during those days become the best actions, even though more superior actions exist (in general during other times of the year!) Verily, the Islamic Nation is a nation that had been blessed with many merits and special characteristics. (For example) this nation ( has been blessed to be a nation that) has advantages that all of its members enjoy; like being generously rewarded for small actions. ▫️Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‎حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَثَلُكُمْ وَمَثَلُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابَيْنِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ اسْتَأْجَرَ أُجَرَاءَ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَعْمَلُ لِي مِنْ غُدْوَةَ إِلَى نِصْفِ النَّهَارِ عَلَى قِيرَاطٍ فَعَمِلَتِ الْيَهُودُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ يَعْمَلُ لِي مِنْ نِصْفِ النَّهَارِ إِلَى صَلاَةِ الْعَصْرِ عَلَى قِيرَاطٍ فَعَمِلَتِ النَّصَارَى ثُمَّ، قَالَ مَنْ يَعْمَلُ لِي مِنَ الْعَصْرِ إِلَى أَنْ تَغِيبَ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى قِيرَاطَيْنِ فَأَنْتُمْ هُمْ، فَغَضِبَتِ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى، فَقَالُوا مَا لَنَا أَكْثَرَ عَمَلاً، وَأَقَلَّ عَطَاءً قَالَ هَلْ نَقَصْتُكُمْ مِنْ حَقِّكُمْ قَالُوا لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ فَذَلِكَ فَضْلِي أُوتِيهِ مَنْ أَشَاءُ ‏"‌‏.‏ The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Your example and the example of the people of the two Scriptures (i.e. Jews and Christians) is like the example of a man who employed some laborers and asked them, 'Who will work for me from morning till midday for one Qirat?' The Jews accepted and carried out the work. He then asked, Who will work for me from midday up to the Asr prayer for one Qirat?' The Christians accepted and fulfilled the work. He then said, 'Who will work for me from the Asr till sunset for two Qirats?' You, Muslims have accepted the offer. The Jews and the Christians got angry and said, 'Why should we work more and get lesser wages?' (Allah) said, 'Have I withheld part of your right?' They replied in the negative. He said, 'It is My Blessing, I bestow upon whomever I wish .' Sahih al-Bukhari, 2268 One of the special characteristics that Allah had blessed the Islamic Nation that with are the times of the year, during which, acts of obedience are extremely advantageous. Likewise, He has blessed the Islamic Nation with special places where forgiveness and mercy may be sought and where righteous deeds may be performed. During those times, and in those places (Muslims) strive to obtain the pleasure of Allah and (perhaps even) compete with others in doing things that bring them closer to the grace and favour of Allah. The seasons or times of the year (in fact) gifts from Allah the Most High that He has given to his worshippers since they are generously rewarded for (relatively) small actions. Therefore, these seasons of times of the year are great opportunities. No one is deprived of their good except he who has indeed been deprived, and no one obtains their good except that he has been guided to success. One of the seasons or times of the year, during which acts of worship and obedience are extremely advantageous, is the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The virtues and importance of those ten days have been mentioned in the Noble Qur’an and in the authentic Sunnah.

Just as the recitation of the Qur’ān is the hallmark of Ramaḍān, dhikr is the hallmark of the blessed days of Dhul Ḥijjah.
