St Maria Goretti Feast Day - 6 July Alessandro Serenelli tried to rape eleven year old Maria. When Maria declared that she would rather die than submit to this sin, Alessandro stabbed her 14 times. As she lay dying, she forgave Alessandro saying, "Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him...and I want him to be with me in Paradise." He remained unrepentant until one night, eight years into his prison term, when Maria appeared to him, dressed in white, gathering lilies in a garden. She was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant farmer, had no chance to go to school, never learned to read or write. When Maria made her First Communion not long before her death at age 12, she was one of the taller and somewhat backward members of the class. Maria may have had trouble with catechism but she had no trouble with faith. God’s will was holiness, decency, respect for one’s body, absolute obedience, total trust.
